I don't think Frontier is a big company, launch day (given recent launches, especially launch day lol) and future downtime will probably be expected. Many games die off in less time than 10 years. This is not something that needs to be worried about at this point. 10 or 20 years maybe.
What thread would that be? I saw a huge thread about losing single player but I didn't see a Q&A.Frontier have already announced that they will release it to the public in these circumstances. There's an entire thread with answers to these questions in the Gamma forum area I believe.
Uh this is a straw-man. What you are imagining is a game that was online only from the start. I'd rather not go into tangents :/Well, if this game really kicks off and is made into a future franchise such as EVE, it will have many years to go. You could literally go and ask that question on any online game forum.
presently surprised

Until now, Elite was claiming offline support, now that its no longer there, I'm concerned how that impacts longevity. Just because we hope the game does well in the future doesn't really amount to anything.
This is red herring... I only used SC as an example in my question asking what might happen. As far as I know nothing regarding SC has been changed regarding solo play and that really isn't even the question lol.Star Citizen is not a game right now so how do we know it will not be the same as ED which requires always online. FD has already commented on this topic. A quick forum search would have save the op some time.
I'm not sure anyone wants to be associated with EVE, it takes a certain mindset to play that game and I'm really not interested in those sorts of games. (I prefer to have fun in my games, not do workif anything, online-only should IMPROVE longevity, because it puts the pressure on FD to create community interaction tools to build relationships in ED, and relationships are what keep a game alive.
Do you think GAMEPLAY or FEATURES made EVE the game it is? no, its the tools players were given to interact with EACHOTHER, as long as Frontier keeps developing the game, giving players more reasons to interact and compete, there willl always be players playing, and ocne the game reaches a certain age, it becomes a hallmark of its genre, like for instance, if it reaches 10 years, a combination of new and old fans will likely allow the game to chug on for an additional ten.
though in the end, its longevity (especially as a free to play title) will still be heavily reliant on FD's determination to proceed with support and development of THIS game, rather than scrapping it for a "sequel" (which would make me cry)
In short, FD, if you read this, do not EVER shut this game down, keep developing and expanding until every system in the galaxy has 30 stations, one faction has won the galactic war, and were all off to the Andromeda galaxy to beat on some aliens and get some genetically engineered catgirl copilots, because damnit i get lonely on the vast open spaces of the outer reach, and cats are ADORABLE
or you know, at least get to the andromeda galaxy

Frontier have announced things that have been wrong or contradicted one and other. Plan for the servers to one day be shut down. If they release them to the public, be presently surprised.

We have no intention of taking the servers down, but I understand what you are getting at. We plan to archive the game from time to time (ie matching client and servers and game world state), and would release such an archive if the servers were to come down. That would also address the issue of how you preserve an online game for the future, from the whole 'retro' perspective.
