We'll have the whole of Frontier Developments, including David Braben and Michael Brookes, running via a neural metaweb emulator on our Google Holo-Watch Air 2S.

Set up a handwave for "Run Elite Dangerous", slip Facebook Glass onto your eyeballs and trade away...

This is not something that needs to be worried about at this point. 10 or 20 years maybe.
I don't think Frontier is a big company, launch day (given recent launches, especially launch day lol) and future downtime will probably be expected. Many games die off in less time than 10 years.

Frontier have already announced that they will release it to the public in these circumstances. There's an entire thread with answers to these questions in the Gamma forum area I believe.
What thread would that be? I saw a huge thread about losing single player but I didn't see a Q&A.

Well, if this game really kicks off and is made into a future franchise such as EVE, it will have many years to go. You could literally go and ask that question on any online game forum.

Uh this is a straw-man. What you are imagining is a game that was online only from the start. I'd rather not go into tangents :/
Until now, Elite was claiming offline support, now that its no longer there, I'm concerned how that impacts longevity. Just because we hope the game does well in the future doesn't really amount to anything.

Star Citizen is not a game right now so how do we know it will not be the same as ED which requires always online. FD has already commented on this topic. A quick forum search would have save the op some time.

if anything, online-only should IMPROVE longevity, because it puts the pressure on FD to create community interaction tools to build relationships in ED, and relationships are what keep a game alive.

Do you think GAMEPLAY or FEATURES made EVE the game it is? no, its the tools players were given to interact with EACHOTHER, as long as Frontier keeps developing the game, giving players more reasons to interact and compete, there willl always be players playing, and ocne the game reaches a certain age, it becomes a hallmark of its genre, like for instance, if it reaches 10 years, a combination of new and old fans will likely allow the game to chug on for an additional ten.

though in the end, its longevity (especially as a free to play title) will still be heavily reliant on FD's determination to proceed with support and development of THIS game, rather than scrapping it for a "sequel" (which would make me cry)

In short, FD, if you read this, do not EVER shut this game down, keep developing and expanding until every system in the galaxy has 30 stations, one faction has won the galactic war, and were all off to the Andromeda galaxy to beat on some aliens and get some genetically engineered catgirl copilots, because damnit i get lonely on the vast open spaces of the outer reach, and cats are ADORABLE

or you know, at least get to the andromeda galaxy

This is red herring... I only used SC as an example in my question asking what might happen. As far as I know nothing regarding SC has been changed regarding solo play and that really isn't even the question lol.
Its just about what would happen when the servers go down, either for good or temporarily. I did try searching, though I must have used the wrong terms because I didn't get much and I wasn't exactly about to dig through all the comments on the huge thread about this.

I'm not sure anyone wants to be associated with EVE, it takes a certain mindset to play that game and I'm really not interested in those sorts of games. (I prefer to have fun in my games, not do work :p). EVE carters to a select crowd but is kept alive by subscriptions.
The game will get shut down when its not profitable to maintain anymore. Its really just business and I have zero problems with that. Given that this is a niche genre, I don't really expect it to last too long unless additional funds are raked in. Well if the servers are released when the games tanks, then that would be a consolation. Still pity about no actual proper offline modes though. The few times I played the beta it seemed just fine.

Then save yourself the trouble and stop worrying. Deal with it when and if it 'happens', and then move on to another game you enjoy. This, is what I'd do.

Shok.

Another thread on this topic..really?

Next time please just use the search function and avoid making another replica thread, this topic has been discussed ad nauseam and we really do not need another round.

Close thread please mods.

It's like some people have never heard of a game without an offline mode... Sheesh.
If the servers shut down at all it's not going to be for a very, very long time (think 15 years or so)

Frontier have announced things that have been wrong or contradicted one and other. Plan for the servers to one day be shut down. If they release them to the public, be presently surprised.

Exactly how I see it, Frontier have not delivered on what has been said previously so how can they even expect to be believed about a promise of future happenings. Just another ploy to grab money by praying on peoples hopes.

Well technically elite WILL be online from the start. It hasn't started yet :)

And btw- this wasn't a straw-man. The straw-man fallacy replaces an opponent's argument by another, weaker one, and defeat that made-up argument, creating the illusion that it has defeated the real one. MrGambler wasn't implying that anyone said something they didn't.

Let's look at this legally then. Someday, it is possible, that FDEV closes and the game is removed. We KNOW there are lots of dedicated well off players that can make the same kind of player agreement with Amazon Servers that exist now... getting it running again...at that point the NEW owners of the public version may choose to ask a operating subscription, or maybe have access to a cluster they own... there are several doesn't possible options once the game closes and it will go back up. The fans are too dedicated to let it stay gone. I am not worried about it.

If the servers go down and Frontier finds itself unable to keep its promise to release the server code to the public... I feel very strongly that there are plenty of very smart people who will either reverse engineer the server protocols to allow the game to continue or we'll see "Oolite: Dangerous" released which will actually improve on the original game.

"What happens when the servers shut down?" This is so deep, I had a little cry!! But then I realised that it was just what it was..

Yes, I reckon someone will be able to start something up and we could contribute via Paypal or something...

There are far too many smart people playing this game for ED to just fade away! (Hey, maybe that question is still mega deep?)
Brian :)

This was originally answered in a forum Q&A over here:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=60284

We have no intention of taking the servers down, but I understand what you are getting at. We plan to archive the game from time to time (ie matching client and servers and game world state), and would release such an archive if the servers were to come down. That would also address the issue of how you preserve an online game for the future, from the whole 'retro' perspective.

It was also mentioned in Newsletter 50
