Discussion EDCoPilot adds new "time trial" racing feature to the huge list of things this "virtual cockpit assistant" can do

I get it... So how about this, if you judge a race can handle 600m/s ships and you set the waypoint 700 or 800 meters in diameter (400m radius)... if the diameter is larger than ship speed per second, I'm thinking one of the points should be captured...
Edit: is there a size limit? if not there could possibly just be set standards, SRV race gets 50m radius, SLF gets 400 m radius and racing ships get 700m radius? I haven't even seen 'Time Trial' yet so I Should just wait to see how it works... I'm excited.
I havent imposed any limit on the size of the waypoint radius. Increasing it for fast ships was my first thought, and then careful placement to catch areas where you are pretty sure the ships are going to be. I'm leaving each waypoint radius as user configurable, as in some cases you can force the player to slow down if you wanted to, and tell them in the instructions. Not saying you have to, but having the option is always good. I would also consider making the waypoint radius bigger than 1 seconds worth of travel, as i dont know how consistent the update file really is at updating regularly, with a busy PC as well. Needs to be checked out.

You are getting a little ahead of where i am in the process, as am focussed on finishing up the SRV racing first. To create fast ship races i will need to add the altitude rules, and i am sure there is other stuff Alec will tap me for ;) ... once i go live with SRV, i was planning to do a little proof of concept fast ship time trial, to see how it goes. I guess in theory you could do same without the altitude limit at the moment.

Just to further explain the thing I was saying about problems with tracking whether of not ships travelling at speed hit waypoints. This is the situation you end up with.

You've quite clearly flown straight through the waypoint's maximum radius circle but none of the 4 (once per second) updates from status.json show you inside the circle so time trial tracking software will tend not to register that you hit it. The solution for that is to test whether lines drawn between consecutive status.json updates intersect the waypoint circle rather than whether the individual sampling points are inside the circle. That works great until you start turning sharp corners around your waypoint (which of course you typically will since that's how you tend to design these courses (with the waypoints on the corners). At that point this will tend to happen.

And then you're back to missing the waypoint again.
i havent implemented the check for "did we fly through the circle in that last interval" yet, but probably will, and apply for ship stages only (dont need the extra calcs for SRV I dont think, but we will see).

My enthusiasm is a reflection of Alec's demos. As someone who has been a little 'stale' with Elite over the last couple months... your project seems Very exciting to me... Yes, one thing at a time!
It's funny but ever since hearing about this project, every time Alec logs on I'm like "ooh, I wonder if he's making a new track... does he need an extra camera guy for a different angle?" lol... he already knows how excited I get sometimes.
I see it's Live, gonna go try it out now.

Enthusiasm is good. I wasnt complaining ... :) .... enjoy!!

Thank you, @Alec Turner for flagging this up. Downloaded EDCoPilot, have barely scratched the surface of it, as I wanted to look at the time trials. But already appreciating the work that Razzafrag has put into it, and the humour as well :) Only had a go at the Kessel Run #1 (15k haul to the port) so far. When I saw you did it in just three minutes, I sat there thinking, 'how?!?'
Then I recalled the lyrics from an ancient Terran pop song by a band, I think they were called 'The Law Enforcement Agency' or something...

Driving back to Kessel
Driving on this moon
Driving back to Kessel
Driving on this moon
Wheels don't hardly touch the ground
Driving on this moon
Did it in three minutes
Driving on, driving on this moon

Enjoy! I'm on holiday away from Elite for a whole week! So I want to live vicariously through people here. If you do the time trials let me know what you think. Does the feature work well? What could be improved? Hiw are the courses? What ideas have you got for new locations/courses?

LOL. Love this .... we almost need a cover band to record it hahaha

I just happen to be in Shinrata....might as well go embarrass myself whilst waiting for a ship to transfer...

Thought I had found a nice little route (in LHS 1541, oddly enough) but it involves an Odyssey settlement, so it isn't really viable. Oh well!

Awesome - go for it. Note that Jameson Base seems to be a particularly slippery place who's surface wants to constantly spin the SRV off course so this one is as much about knowing when to go slow as it is about going fast. I've found that slower, more controlled runs nearly always turn out faster than those where you're pushing to go faster. Good luck!

Hmm. Had to abort twice, as the audio instructions seemed to be lagging badly, so didn't know where I was going! Maybe just my setup? Though no problem with any other time trials thus far. Will try again another time :)

It's probably best to do a very slow lap using the audio instructions just to learn the route. I need to get better at setting waypoints and scripting the instructions so they tell you what you need to do next in plenty of time. I should probably start adding additional dummy waypoints (with a large radius) which are there purely as trigger points for appropriately timed directional instructions.

Cheers for the tips  Back to dragging my iCourier around engineers just in case I do, in fact, decide to take part in Braking Badly...
