Elite / Frontier Elite - Amiga Version - Detail questions

Spacegamer: Right you are, yes.
So, that's three differences so far:
1. Thargoids yield 40 Cr instead of 15
2. Military lasers allowed on all sides
3. Library function

Dunno if this has been answered (haven't read entire thread).

On Amiga Elite, you can force a jump into witchspace by holding ALT when jumping. I just verified this myself on WinUAE running Elite 1.0.

Cool! ALT works for me, too! Yay. Thanks, Fangrim.

The next sentence I was going to write would almost have been:

"And I can now confirm that Thargoids DO use ECM in witch-space, too: I tried to shoot one with a missile, and it got destroyed by ECM."

BUT:

Although this is exactly what happened, I could not resist but fire _another_ missile at the same Thargoid when it was very close ---- and the missile hit and destroyed the Thargoid.

Oh and PS: Fangrim, just read your signature: How far did you progress in? What's your score? Do you have any information on when the missions are triggered? If you encounter any, I'd be glad if you let me know at which score! Thanks --- and good hunting, commander!

So, that leaves a couple of possibilities:

1. It is random if a Thargoid uses ECM or not
2. It depends on the distance of the missile to the Thargoid
3. Thargoids will always use ECM on the first missile but be destroyed by the second

--- More testing to do, but thanks to Fangrim, I now have Thargoids in abundance just waiting to be killed...

On C-64 version you can get Constrictor mission in G1, but you have to be at least Competent, and above 5.000 CR (if I remembered it correctly). I've destroyed Constrictor in G2 (or G3/G4), but I've received this mission in G1.

Fangrim, if this is true, I'll soon find out (I'm currently just system hopping and shooting in Galaxy 2).
If true, this would explain, why the mission was triggered a lot earlier when I played the game years ago -- at least, I _believe_ that it was triggered earlier.

On the other hand, I've read a couple of times that the mission can either be triggered in G1 or G2, but when triggered in G2, you get less detailed hints as to the whereabouts of the Constrictor (if triggered in G1, you'll get something like "The Constrictor has been spotted in Tionisla" and if triggered in G2, you'll (supposedly) get something like "The Constrictor was here but is gone.")

So: Off to some more shooting. Let's see if I can give you guys another update today :)

im at 100k poaints in galaxy2

now i can fore witch space i will get you a figure for thargon kils at that level.

i know its more than 4.

I have just cheated a new commander to test some witch space data. Here's what I found:

Harmless: 2 kills needed to leave witch space
Mostly Harmless: 4 kills
Poor: 6 kills
Average: 8 kills *
Above Average: 10 kills *
Competent: 12 kills *
Dangerous: 14 kills
Deadly: 16 kills *
Elite: 18 kills *

--- Actually, I tried this for harmless, mostly harmless, and poor. I knew that Dangerous needed 14 kills, so these are the only ratings that are actually verified at this point, but I think it is safe to assume that the number of kills for each rating is correct (with the possible exception of elite -- maybe an added bonus is required here).

That means: Rating is the _ONLY_ value that affects the number of kills needed to leave witch space. No random number involved here.

Redborg: If you are at 100K points, you are Competent, right?! So, can you verify please, that you need 12 kills to leave witch space?! (Note that the message "Drive Repaired" appears _after_ the Bounty message and thus shortly after a new Thargoid appears).

And BTW: In my "real" game: No missions, yet... Some more jumping necessary, I fear -- I'm approaching 190K points...

pretty sure competent is 11 unless i lost count twice mate.

of course their may be gradations within levels. ive had a few right on commanders but no promotion yet.

Interesting... 11 :) Ok, so all ranks have to be checked.... Something to do for tonight.
In this case, so far, only harmless (2), mostly harmless (4), poor (6), competent (11), and dangerous (14) are verified.

"Right On Commander" is awarded either if you are promoted or every 256 kills.

Redborg: Which version of Elite are you using? 1.0? (Hit "W" during flight if you don't know)

ok it is 12 for competent and i am up to dangerous.

ps the number of times i have had witch space unintentionally is scary. 5 or 6 times in last few hrs.

Hey redborg, great work, thanks!

So, the formula for leaving witch space is simply "Rating * 2" -- if Harmless is defined to be 1...

I will edit my first post in this thread to reflect all the answers we have gathered already (thanks to your help, all!!).

BTW: Are there any questions regarding the Amiga version, any of you would like to be answered?

what are the missions and rewards?

constrictor credits?

thargon plans energy unit?

supernova gemstones

something ecm jammer

something cloak

Which missions are available can be read directly from the ASCII code of the adf image of Elite:

"Warning - the sun is [sic!] this system is going Supernova. You are advised to leave as soon as possible. Please help us! Everyone else has fled"... and so on. So, mission supernova exists, as a reward, the code tells me "Please accept a selection of precious Zanxian gem stones as a token of our appreciation." but I also find (directly after the previous sentence): "Thank you - you will be well rewarded by our government."

Constrictor: "A prototype model of the new top-secret military ship, the CONSTRICTOR has been stolen by unknown agents from the navy research base at XXX", etc.
Reward: 10,000 Cr (plus the bounty for destroying the Constrictor)

Thargoid plans: "The navy has managed to obtain rare blueprints of a Thargoid battle ship giving details of the drive and weapon systems." ...
Reward: Latest naval energy unit "which will recharge your energy banks at twice the normal rate"

Space station: "The Galactic Intelligence Agency reports that a nearby system has been invaded by Thargoid ships and that the space station has been captured." ...
Reward: "A new device was salvaged from one of the Thargoid ships" (ECM Jammer)

Cloaked Ship: "Warning to all Traders: Reports having been coming in from Traders in this sector of an unknown ship with awesome capabilities." ...
There's nothing of a reward mentioned in this case (at least not in this place), but I seem to recall that one of the cargo canisters, which the destroyed ship deploys, contains the cloaking device.

From SARA cheating, I also know that the cloaking device, and the ECM jammer exist. I have never heard of the "latest naval energy unit". If this is reflected in the cheat screen, I'd suppose that at the address of the extra energy unit, not 01 is entered, but 02... So, maybe we can cheat the energy refresh rate to be even faster... Of course, in my real game, absolutely no cheating is allowed (not even forcing a mis-jump), but I use cheats to get as much information about the game as possible...

[And btw: That's another difference between Elite 1.0 and Elite 2.0: No copy protection in 2.0 -- how do I enter the cheat menu there?? Does anybody know? Does the cheat menu still exist?]

ok in the version i am playing constrictor mission appears at 140k points exactly and every time.

ive tested that by going past 140k as close as possible a few times. closes i got was within 90 points and it appears on next docking every time.

i am in galaxy 2.

as i side note i was being killed in witch space recently and ecm jammer destroyed came up just before i died. clearly a bug.
