Narrative
New ships
  • The Challenger
[*=1]A modified version of the Alliance Chieftain, the Alliance Challenger has been envisaged as a frontline combat vessel. With a generous complement of hardpoints, the Challenger can more than hold its own in a fight, and although it weighs more than its sister ship, it has retained the Chieftain’s characteristic agility. It also has stronger armour than the Chieftain, allowing it to soak up a significant amount of punishment.
    [*=1]Specifications: Hardpoints: 1 Large - 3 Medium - 3 Small. Multi-crew capable (+1 seat).

  • The Krait Mk II
[*=1]The Krait MkII is a reimagining of the Krait Lightspeeder, which was originally manufactured by Faulcon DeLacy in the 3100s. Although the new ship is larger than the original, it possesses many of the same characteristics, emphasising speed, manoeuvrability and firepower over defensive capability. The ship also boasts a fighter bay and space for up to two crew members, making it a good option for those seeking a medium-weight, multipurpose vessel.
[*=1]Specifications: Hardpoints: 3 Large - 2 Medium. Medium ship. Multi-crew (+2 seats) and fighter bay capable.

Missions and Scenarios
  • First introduced in Chapter One of Beyond, we are introducing a Wing Mining Mission for you and your fellow Commanders to take on!
  • Added new high threat USS's, and missions that can direct players to them/
Megaship and Installation Interactions
  • In a similar fashion to the Megaship interactions, which were introduced in Chapter One, Commanders will now be able to scan and interact with Space Installations.
[*=1]Scan – Scanning the installation will allow Commanders to see what they can interact with: Turrets, Comms Arrays and Cargo Bays.
[*=1]Turret hack – Disable turrets protecting other potential hackable points. This will deactivate security measures put in place to protect the Comms Arrays and Cargo Bays.
[*=1]Comms array – Get tradable data from the Comms Array.
[*=1]Cargo bay – Fire a limpet on the Cargo Bay to unlock and steal commodities and materials.
  • Video: Medical Installation Scanning
  • Added Escape Hatch interaction points to damaged megaships - Escape Hatches
Technology Broker
  • There are now large variants of weapons available at Guardian Tech Brokers and Human Tech Brokers, including the return of the Guardian FSD Booster module!
  • These Tech Brokers will issue blueprint requests to collect Guardian data as well as materials and then, once delivered, will unlock certain Guardian modules or weapons for purchase.
[*=1]Large Plasma Shock Cannon (Fixed, Gimbal, Turret) - Image
[*=1]Large Guardian Shard Cannon (Fixed, Turret) - Image
[*=1]Large Guardian Plasma Launcher (Fixed, Turret) - Image
Thargoids
  • Thargoids continue to be an intergalactic menace! With the Alliance introducing a new ship, the Thargoids intend to up their game too, introducing new Scouts that will buff other Scouts and increase their combat efficiency.
    rsMnApm.jpg
    C40bOiI.jpg
Crime&Punishment Changes
  • Players can now hand themselves in to security contacts, if they have outstanding bounties, and a zero notoriety rating. Players that hand themselves in will pay off the bounty and be deported to the nearest detention center
  • Relaxed the friendly fire thresholds against NPC ships, to lower the amount of erroneous crimes being handed out
  • Notoriety now decays whilst the player is docked
  • Players current notoriety level displayed in cockpit will no longer be potentially out of date
  • Relaxed the rules for Multicrew gunners so that they are less prone to accidental assault/reckless weapon discharge crimes

Added a thread by Will Flanagan (Community Manager) talking about issues and their fixes regarding Missions, Installation Crashes, Engineer Stats and the Guardian FSD Booster:

Hello Commanders,

With the deployment of the 3.1 update yesterday, we have received reports on a few issues and wanted to update you on the steps being made to correct them. For anything that hasn’t been listed here, please report it in our Bug Report section so they can be investigated by our QA team.

Missions
  • Collect Wing Missions: We received reports that it is not possible to hand in Collect Wing Missions. The team believe that this is an issue with the mission template and we are working on a server-side fix that will be deployed as soon as possible.
  • Mission Depot: You may have noticed we have added a mission depot for all Collect mission types. There are a few improvements and balance tweaks we want to make to this feature before it works exactly as intended. As this is a server-side template update, it should be deployed as soon as possible. It’s worth mentioning that these balance tweaks will be ongoing, and this kind of depot structure is something we’d like to bring to future mission types and templates.
  • Missing Missions: Missions that were taken on (and still active) during 3.0 have been removed with the arrival of 3.1. In future, we will endeavour to communicate this with more advanced notice.

However, the team are working on returning the following missions types:
Returned Mission Templates
  • Long Distance Courier
  • Long Distance Delivery
  • Long Distance Passenger (Bulk, VIP, Sight Seeing)
  • Long Distance Smuggle
  • Passenger (Bulk, VIP, Sight-Seeing)
  • Ram Tah Missions
For other mission templates, affected Commanders will receive a credit refund and an inbox message outlining the amount (based on average earnings, plus a bonus, for each mission type.)
These issues are server-side fixes so will not require an update and will be deployed as soon as possible.

Crashing at certain Installations

As detailed here, we have identified that the following installations are causing players to crash:
  • Military Installation LFT 926
  • Security Installation Izanagi
  • Military Installation Gridge
  • Security Installation Mandhrithar
  • Military Installation Coeus
  • Military Installation Los
  • Military Installation Randgnid
  • Colonia Bastion Colonia
  • Skulmoor Keep HIP 33368
  • The Golkonda Polevnic
  • The Sentinel Pleiades Sector IR-W d1-55
As a temporary measure, we have removed these installations as we work on a fix. We’ll keep you updated in this thread.

Guardian FSD Booster

The Guardian FSD Booster is not functioning as intended in specific situations. If commanders attempt to use either the FSD Injector Synthesis or Neutron Star FSD boost, the Guardian module will fail and display ‘Jump Exceeds Drive Fuel Use Limit’ info message.

We’re aiming to deploy a client-side hotfix in the near-future to address the Bodysite Crash and Guardian FSD Booster. We’ll keep you updated in this thread, also.

In the meantime, thank you all for your diligence in reporting these issues, and your patience as we work to get them fixed.

UPDATE:
Engineer Stats Not Updating

As of 3.40PM we have resolved an issue where certain player's stats were not updating in relation to reputation with the Engineers.
Although you won't see any change as a result of this fix until early next week, you can rest assured that you are still making progress and your transactions will be counted over the weekend, and since launch. They will display correctly at some point early next week.

Update from Edward Lewis (Senior Community Manager):

UPDATE AND FIXES:

Hi all. The team have been hard at work at introducing some fixes to some of the issues above.

· Collect Wing Missions – can now be handed in.
· Mission Depot – now tweaked and balanced. Please keep in mind that further tweaks may be necessary.
· Missing Missions – refunds have now been issued for affected Commanders.
· Returned Mission Templates – missions should now appear on transaction tabs.
· Commander stats – should be now updating, including Engineer unlocks. Stats that should have been accrued between 3.1 release and this fix being applied may take a few days to appear.
· Market effects, including Powerplay effects and discounts are now fixed and working.
· FX’17 flight suit - can now be applied.

Thank you all for your patience while we continue to work on any issues you’re experiencing. Thanks again for all your feedback.

Added Patch Notes for Update 3.1.1 and a comment by Paul Crowther (New Community Manager) regarding Massacre Mission targets:

Greetings Commanders!

We will be taking the galaxy servers down for the 3.1.1 update now. Expected downtime will be roughly 30 minutes. We will let you know on the forums and social media when they are back online.

Cheers!

----------------------------
Fixes and Improvements

Missions

  • Fixed players not being able to hand in a mission after accepting certain mission 'wrinkles'
  • Fixed some missions appearing incorrectly in the 'Requirements Not Met' section of the mission board

Ships

  • Rearranged incorrectly placed internal power modules on the Alliance Chieftain, Alliance Challenger and Krait Mk.II

Stability Fixes

  • Fixed a crash that could occur when dropping from Supercruise into a Covert Combat Mission USS
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when dropping from Supercruise into an instance with a military installation
  • Fixed disconnection issues around certain installations

Modules

  • Fixed a "Jump Exceeds Fuel Use Limit" discrepancy when using a Guardian FSD Booster with FSD Injection or white Dwarf/Neutron star boosts

Installations

  • Reinstated installations that were causing crashes

Hi Commanders! Thanks for your reports and feedback on the issue of Massacre Mission targets not counting. We wanted to take a minute to clarify this for you. When you take part in these massacre missions you will be given specific targets to take out. You can identify these targets in the target panel in the forward HUD as they will state ‘Mission Target’.

Opponents that aren’t flagged as Mission Targets won’t count towards your score. So for example, you might be tasked with taking out ‘Pirates’ but there may be wanted ships, that are aligned to the faction that you’re looking for, in the same area called ‘terrorists’. Destroying a Terrorist won’t count towards the score as it won’t be flagged as a ‘Mission Target’. Currently you cannot see the archetype but we will be looking to expose that in the future.

Good news though, in future we are looking to ensure all massacre missions will be updated to direct you to a specific mission USS where you will find your targets. This will avoid you having to figure out which of the opponents in the area will count to your score.

Keep the feedback coming!

Added Patch Notes for Update 3.1.2 & Update 3.1.3 and a comment by Will Flanagan (Community Manager) mentioning a new semi-automatic system for submitting player factions:

Hello everyone,
We have just taken the galaxy servers down to deploy the 3.1.2 update.

Fixes and Improvements

  • Fixed a softlock that could occur when dropping in to a Military USS
  • Fixed missing Search and Rescue contact text
  • Additional minor optimisations and fixes
Greetings Commanders!
As you will have seen, we have taken the galaxy servers down to deploy the 3.1.3 update. Here are the patch notes:

Fixes and Improvements
  • Fixed an issue where AI ships could incorrectly attack each other
  • Fixed Thargoid Massacre and Illegal Massacre missions not spawning USS's when they should
  • Fixed an issue where Faction Bounties were being awarded in PvP instead of Power Bounties
  • Fixed an issue where NPCs were not aligning with the correct side and engaging in Powerplay Military Strike Zones

We are looking at all the systems currently in place (such as community goals, player factions and so forth) and revising them. In regards to player factions, we're working on a new system and will be announcing more details on it very, very shortly.

The current system in place (for player factions) is a heavily manual process, where we receive numerous applications and requests for changes, and information. This has, unfortunately, led to misplaced applications and errors. The new system that we will introduce will move towards a semi-automated process, which is more efficient and provide feedback to players applying to have their faction implemented into the game, in the initial stages and afterwards as well.

We apologise for any frustation caused by this, not just to yourself but also to other players awaiting similiar communications and updates from us. Ultimately, the new system will have players' factions in the game quicker than before and with feedback (for factions who are rejected).

Added some comments by Edward Lewis (Senior Community Manager) regarding Frontier's presence at Gamescom 2018 (21-25 August):

Just wanted to set the correct expectations about what we're doing at Gamescom. As with previous Gamescom Frontier Meet events, we've focused on what's coming in the short term with our game releases, we've had giveaways, food and drink, and created a space where you can interact with the developers and meet each other (in some cases for the first time in real life!).

This year will fit the same mould, with us detailing what's still to come as part of Beyond.

As David was quoted in this post, we are still working on Elite Dangerous, and we'll let you know when we're ready to share our plans post-Beyond.
To be clear, I wasn't talking about Premium Content in my response, I'm just talking about the content we've already discussed at things like Frontier Expo.

My post above is nothing to do with premium content, nor is this a confirmation about it either. We'll share more information when it's available.

Announcement thread for Frontier Meet @ Gamescom 2018 here.

The plan was – beyond the current season for Elite, which is mostly announced – there are a lot of things that we will be announcing that are really exciting, some of which will be free, some of which will be paid. So it’s that quite healthy mix that is very good for the studio and is really good for the game.

Added a Hybrid Fighters Trailer and updated the 3.2 Update (Chapter 3) section with new info from a 3.2 announcement thread by Paul Crowther (Community Manager):

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous: Beyond - Chapter Three is launching on August 28, and is the second of our two smaller content updates before the larger update called Chapter Four at the end of the year. Here’s a breakdown of the key features that we talked about at Gamescom:

Guardian Beacons

New Guardian Beacons have been discovered in the galaxy. These will lead you to new discoveries and help you uncover new Guardian secrets. The puzzles you solve at these giant structures will lead you to unlock some incredible new technology.

New Ships – Hybrid Fighters

The Hybrid fighters combine the best of both standard and Guardian technology to make them hyper-effective combat machines. They come in three variants:
  • The Trident armed with a plasma charger
  • The Javelin with a shard launcher
  • The Lance with a gauss projector
These ships are light, fast and agile with strong shields to let them dart into the fray. The trade-off, as with other smaller fighters, is that they have weaker hulls.
To acquire a Hybrid fighter blueprint you will need to investigate new Guardian beacons which will point you in the direction of the sites to investigate.

New Ship – The Alliance Crusader

A new member of the Alliance ship group, the Crusader acts as a midpoint between the Chieftain and the Challenger with one very important difference: A fighter bay!

Engineers in Colonia!

The Engineers have arrived in Colonia! The engineers will be found at planet bases across the Colonia region and will only be available to players who have purchased the Horizons expansion and have done some engineering previously.

The new Engineers will only make contact with Commanders who have interacted with Felicity Farseer, Elvira Martuuk, The Dweller, Liz Ryder and Tod “The Blaster” Mcquinn. As with all existing Engineers, the new additions will all have to be unlocked before they make their services available.

Given that Colonia is a human colony on the fringe of space, not all technology will be available at first. Commanders out in fringe will need to work together with the Engineers to expand the available tech. That means the more a recipe is used the sooner will the improved version be made available.

Each Engineer will start as level 1 and as usual you will need to complete a request to unlock the engineer before you can upgrade any modules. The community can work together to raise the level of these engineers from 1 to 3! The current grade of the Engineers will be show on a local news article.

Wing Missions

Commanders will have the opportunity to take on planetary Wing Missions, further increasing the mission types you can take on with your friends.

More Weapons!
The galaxy grows ever more dangerous, so we've increased the available firepower to help you defend yourselves. The following weapons have been added to outfitting:
  • Large Dumbfire Missile
  • Large Seeking Missile
  • Large Torpedo Launcher
  • Large Multi Cannon (turret)
The following weapons have been added to the human tech broker:
  • Small Shock Cannon (turret)
  • Small Shock Cannon (gimbal)
  • Small Shock Cannon (fixed)
The following weapons have been added to the Guardian tech Broker
  • Small Guardian plasma launcher (turret)
  • Small Guardian plasma launcher (fixed)
  • Small Guardian Shard Cannon (turret)
  • Small Guardian Shard Cannon (fixed)
  • Small Guardian Gauss Cannon (fixed)
Thanks again for your continued support Commanders. We can't wait to see what you think of these new additions! o7

Updated the 3.3 Update (Chapter Four) section with delays on 2018 Premium (paid for) Content, Fleet Carriers, Ice Planets Improvements & Powerplay Improvements from a thread by Zac Antonaci (Head of Communications):

Summary:

- Some elements of the Chapter Four update have had to be prioritized and this means they won't be making it into the Chapter Four update.
- This means that other parts of the Chapter Four update have been able to get more time on them improving other elements of the update.
- In addition, we have now gone into early stages of development on the next era of content coming after the "Beyond" season. It's still very early so we aren't able to share those details with you right now.
- The Chapter Four update is still the largest update in the Beyond season and we'll be showing the content to everyone soon.
- We had said that there would be additional premium (paid for) content coming in 2018, but we have decided to not put that paid for content out this year and instead focus on the long term vision for the game and that future development.

Full announcement:

Greetings Commanders,

First of all, we would like to take a moment to thank you all for the continued support and making Elite Dangerous the incredible, community driven, phenomenon that it is today.

We started our Elite Dangerous journey over 6 years ago and today hundreds of thousands of Commanders log in regularly to continue their epic space journey. From a personal perspective, joining the team shortly after the kickstarter, and being a part of this incredible community has truly been one of the most amazing highlights of my career. From in-person community meet ups, online community groups and jaw-dropping events, you have always inspired us with your passion and enthusiasm.

We wanted to take a moment to talk about a number of topics being discussed in the community and to be as open and transparent as possible. It’s a long read, so make sure you’re safely docked and comfortable before attempting to navigate this post. ;)

The things we’d like to go through include Chapter Four content and a little about a future beyond “Beyond”, as well as touching on the subject of “paid premium content” in 2018 for Lifetime Expansion Pass owners.

Let’s get started with Chapter Four content. As all of you know, our largest update of the year is in final development and will be available for players to get hands-on with in just a number of weeks (Some time in Q4).This will be the final update of 2018 and the Beyond season. The Beyond season was always something that we wanted to do in order to bring even more enhancements to the core experience of Elite and being able to dedicate a full development team (over 100 people!) for a full year of free content was specifically to gear ourselves up to support our long term vision for the game.
On a personal note, Squadrons is something I’m most excited by. Seeing our player groups grow and the stories they’ve created has been incredible and now being able to see them take that to the next level, formalize their groups in-game, TAG up and team up is something I’m really looking forward to.

There’s also a huge group of players who are most excited by the many new additions to exploration. I know from talking to so many of you online and in-person, this is a huge moment and the development team are working really hard to deliver new content and mechanics to give explorers that thrill of venturing out into the black. And then there’s even more with additions with significant mining enhancements, a full game visual upgrade and the Codex which all bring even more richness to the game experience and depth to the way people play. It’s certainly an update we’re all very excited to see the community explore.

We do have one exciting piece of news to share that to date, we have not shared with our community. A while ago, our development went from pre-production into full production on our next major milestone of Elite development.

What that means in the simplest terms is that the team are actively working on the next major landmark which takes us into our next era for Elite. We aren’t going to be ready to talk about or announce any details for quite a while yet, it is early in the development and there is still a long way to go, but I can say that this is something that will be scheduled to release a considerable time after the final update in the Beyond series. We will have more details on exactly what this means and how the era will roll out after the release of Beyond – Chapter Four, but this does mark some exciting next steps and a continued commitment to the long term vision for the game and our community.

Naturally, there will be community questions that might come up from this information. We aren’t going to be ready to talk about what method or model the content will be. What we can say is that it’s expected to be a major milestone in the history of Elite and will be paid content. Lifetime Expansion owners will obviously receive the content as part of their pass.

As part of pre-production, the team investigate all areas of the content and scope them out thoroughly. It’s important to take the time to be clear on what the vision for this is and how we imagine the content working. During this process, we have made a decision to adjust the focus of content that were previously planned for the Chapter Four update, adding some significant new gameplay, but it also means some other aspects will have to change. This means that some elements of content such as Ice Planets (which many of you will have seen some fantastic progress updates from LaveCon earlier this year) and Fleet Carriers for squadrons will not be coming as part of the Beyond – Chapter Four update. Some of the technology from the ice planets specifically will be used within our wider and global visual upgrade, so there will still be general improvements, but not everything we originally envisaged. However, we wanted you to be aware that these two elements specifically would be reprioritised out of the upcoming Beyond - Chapter Four update. What this does mean is that the rest of the content will be able to benefit for the changes in scheduling through deeper and richer gameplay mechanics. The Chapter Four update still has the same, if not bigger scope and continues to promise the largest update of the Beyond season and a truck load of great features for all Horizons Commanders for free. We’re very excited to be sharing the details with you over the coming weeks, so stay tuned for more info.

Another area that we’ve had a number of questions on is the “premium content” coming in 2018.

As many of you will know, we previously mentioned that premium (paid for) content would also be coming within the Beyond season of updates and that Lifetime Expansion Pass holders would be getting this for free. However, as we went through the early stages of what the next era for Elite Dangerous would be, we decided that it would be better to spend that additional time on the future content, rather than bringing new types of purchasable content out this year.

This is a big positive for the long term future of the game and its content. However, we also understand that there are people with Lifetime Expansion Passes who haven’t received paid for content in this season, because Beyond has been free to all owners of Horizons. We truly appreciate the support and commitment that those owners put in us when they purchased the LEP and we will be making sure that there is a form of free store content going out to them by the end of this year.

The most important thing we would like for our community to take from this, is that there are some incredibly exciting things just over the horizon. The Elite Dangerous development team is larger than it has been at any point in the last 6 years. It is thanks to your continued support, dedication, feedback and engagement that has made this possible. We have the Beyond Chapter Four update coming soon, our largest update in the Beyond season, with some awesome headline features and a fantastically promising future of content and ongoing development. We’re looking forward to sharing more details with you in the future. However, if you have any questions feel free to share them with us by posting in this thread and we’ll try and answer as many of them as we can.

Thanks
