Maybe, the prinicipal direction is orchestral.

Michael

Since you are going for a orchestral soundtrack with strong choral work I'm hoping for a little splash of Ligeti:

I hope the music will have a lot of "dark and mysterious" passages and not go all out march music in the style of Williams. He is without a doubt a master composer, but in today's climate his music would feel a bit dated in a sci fi setting IMO. Especially since people will only draw parallels to Star Wars and I think it's important to give Elite it's own voice.

So how many times and what ways have you watched it?
When it appeared on Youtube, around 10 times (no joke!). Around 4-5 times a day after that, and most recently in glorious .mp4 HD. It's just an amazing video and every time I watch it I'm extremely pleased with my decision to pledge for the DDF level. If combat is anything like the video (and I hope it is, no matter what flight model gets decided upon) that's just a fraction of the good stuff that's going into ED.

Hey Frontier Developments team; late reply to the thread, but I've checked out the the Capital Ship trailer. It's fantastic. Watched it several times now, and find its contents brilliant. >_<
The music is EXCELLENT!!! Space opera = classical score. Very happy we're all in agreement on this ;p

You can take a look (hear!) at the soundtrack for Tron: Legacy by Daft Punk. That is an awesome style-mix between Orchestral and Electronic. I believe they were helped by a big film composer (Hans Zimmer?) for the orchestral part.

I second this, orchestral is nice and all, but I would personally prefer the electronic touch in a space setting. Like the dev diary music for example - is that piece available anywhere?

I like music that is unexpected.

One of the things I liked about e.g. Twin Peaks was the jazz music. It was a soapy-styled police/mystery series with jazz music basically.

The orchestral sounds are very Hollywood and expected for larger than life spacsims.

In principle any game these days needs to have options for listening to your own music.

But I would not mind some African rhythms as I mine my claim or claim my mine if you are more oriented towards piracy.:D

I think Battlestar Gallactica, the remake that is, had a sort of interesting drum sound thing in combat iirc.

Listen to this..

Its probably going to go completely unnoticed :( but I'd like to suggest that appreciating the wonder of this soundtrack of Laputa, Island in the sky, might be a beneficial influence to the composition of some ED music..

Its perhaps more orientated towards story and chatacters than epic space battles but I hope it is valued nevertheless :)

Hope you all enjoy:

Laputa

When Strauss plays while I am docking I will cry like a little kid.

I would also love some more classical music like it used to be.
By the way: I am still hoping for Ben Daglish and other old legendary veterans to join the music crew. The greatest composers for the greatest game.
Trust me that only new songs from the great composers (maybe only as bonus tracks, just one or two per composer) would boost your sales.

It's pretty hard to know whether it would boost sales, Johann. The initial question would be "how many MORE buyers / subscribers of the game would there be, compared to those that would buy it anyway, were you to have only new songs from the great composers - just one or two per composer", followed by "Would the number of any of these additional subscribers / buyers justify the expense in paying the composers individually for their music." I would agree with you that using the "greatest composers" would probably improve the music quality of the game and make it more epic a game, which would raise the game's profile and that that may raise sales, but am also wary of the target audience of Elite: Dangerous and that they likely aren't all classical / orchestral music aficionados and that the majority may well be pretty happy with music something reminiscent of the predecessor Elite games with some new content too.

A soundtrack with Gravity

I usually turn the in-game music off for good after listening to it for a couple of hours...
But in this case I,m looking forward to playing ED whilst listening to the soundtrack to last years film 'Gravity'. Without Sandra Bullock screaming.
Its an AWESOME percussionless nerve jangler composed by Steven Price that haunts and shakes and throws you around with muscular mountains of sonic wow. Space - it says - is harsh.

Check it out.

I for one dislike the typical orchestral soundtracks for movies and especially games these days. They are fine for what they are, atmospheric and fitting to the theme of the movie/game. But they all lack what to me is most important if I'm supposed to listen to them for hundreds of hours: great melodies, hooks that make me want to listen to them again and again. The Frontier intro theme and most of the classical pieces included have that, maybe more so in their modern interpretation (that came with the limited sounds of the old computers).

I can only hope ED's music will have some "character" like in the old days. If not, I might have to set the music volume to 0% after a few hours and turn on "Space Night", like I used to do in 1993 after hundreds of hours of listening to "In the hall of the Mountain King".

For those who don't know Space Night, have a look and listen here:

I liked the music. I mentioned before that I realised I'd completed my first mission due to an emotion I felt. Then realised that emotion was because of the success music. It was subtle enough I wasn't initially aware of it, but it was successful enough in its job that it made me feel.

I did that!
Hope you enjoyed it?
Thanks for the linkage! :)

you did that ? omg, compliments..

it's very very nice.:)

Thank you!
I've never received a clapping Billy Dee before! :)

Yeah - I would've loved to have gone for the 'Composer for Elite' gig, but I'm an actor as well as a composer and was tied up with acting stuff for most of last year.

I think we're in very safe hands with Erasmus though!

By the way, here's a cheeky link to my soundcloud page where you can listen to some more of my stuff if you want. :)

Thank you!

I posted your work as pretty example to follow.
It would be amazing if he could do something similar: a Frontier intro re-make or re-interpretation..

More than that what is important is the impression:
an instantly recognizable music that recalls the style elite and the heart that makes you jump for the impetus and strength.

the various moments that you can find in the gameplay (just in alpha version or any stand alone part of the game that devs are testing..) should be the right starting point for the composition and texture of the main soundtrack.

oh well, i hope so.. and i trust him

This was sort of discussed on another thread and I have to say I rather agree with the consensus there.
Although the Elite 2 theme has powerful nostalgic appeal, I don't actually think it's terribly good musically! (That's why I tinkered with the chord progressions, elaborated the orchestration, and tried to give it some symphonic weight!)
Maybe a few subtle references would be nice for the nostalgia buffs (myself included) but generally I think ED should have a fresh musical identity.
