Elite:Dangerous for Linux?

And No, I don't know of anyone successfully using Linux (any distro) or any Wine Configuration to get any portion of Elite to run, and I also gave it a whirl. There are many reasons why Elite won't work in Wine, most have to do with MS DLL's needed.
I think my path with a new Ryzen PC will be Linux OS running a Win7 VM for the few games I can't run natively. I'm looking at UnRaid as well so we'll see if that's viable.

E: D does not work with DX 11 on Wine. It may be TL: DR but that info was in the thread.

As for moving on, not me. Windows is becoming less and less desirable and I want other options. A Linux port with Vulkan API should be able to run on Mac hardware which will refresh that code as well. PS4 is a FreeBSD variant, Mac OS is Unix. Getting Linux covered should not be a hardship with that development base.

A quick check of stats shows Linux and Mac OS users total about 15% of all users. All the devs need to do is price out a Linux code build of E: D (something they said they were doing yonks ago) then go on Kickstarter for that amount. If they get funded, they do it. If not, then we lay it to rest.

I'd fund it and I'd buy a new account for it. I want it that badly.

I've posted this elsewhere but I'm sure this is on topic...

The only reason people use Windows is because you only need "A chimpanzee and two trainees" to run it...http://www.theviewscreen.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/tsfs0559-600x252.jpg

But when things go wrong...

And that is why we should have a Linux version.

Since Wine is being updated all the time with support for new games, it is conceivable that this had changed since the original discussion (this threads starts back in 2012). The other variable is that I'm not looking to run ED, I'm looking to run the ED Combat Tutorial Demo, which is likely a very simplified, stripped down version of full ED. There's a chance this demo would actually run even if the full version does not.

I tried to get ED to run about 6 months ago on the dev version of wine. I failed. Damn crappy dotNet based launcher wouldn't even run properly.

You'd be better off getting CrossOver. The commercial version for WINE.

One of my other games on Steam, Dirt Rally came over to Linux not all that long ago. Always nice to see a game I have brought over. Runs pretty great on my laptop too actually, even though it doesn't quite meet the minimum specs.

Maybe one of these years I can count Elite: Dangerous among the ranks. *fingers crossed*

Maybe FD should hand the porting of ED to Linux and macOS to Feral?

There's a number of companies that do Linux (and Mac) ports. Feral has been mentioned, and Aspyr I know had done Civ V and VI of which I've used the native ports very happily.

Perhaps an additional Kickstarter for a Linux port may be in order. Bring back a lifetime pass for $200 or something, with the cash going towards a Linux/Mac port. I'm sure there's a lot of players, particularly those who missed out on the first lifetime pass, that would jump onto that offer.

For me, Elite Dangerous is the only reason why I'm using Windows - everything else (including games like Cities Skylines or Kerbal Space Program) is running fine with Ubuntu.

I was using Win7, and I'm one of those guys that do not want to install spysoft Win10. At least Frontier has 3 years left for migration...

This is one of the major reasons I switched to a console for gaming - I really, really, really dislike Windows, particularly versions != 7. I also really dislike PC-based DRM.

The percentage of people having dual boot system is growing exponentially. In the end noone is going to be compromising doing that and game developers will just have to take the most logical way.

It' s not that difficul to port E: D to Linux, and we've pledged since we' ve been promised a Linux version after a Mac OSX, IIRC.

Sorry but I don't recall FDev ever promising a Linux version, and nor would I ever expect to see one. The user base of Linux is just too small.

We are treating Linux seriously, we need to do some research for costings and so forth before promising. I'm sure you'd rather we did that than just slap the stretch goal up and hope for the best :) Michael

This was the only real commitment I could see. Never followed up on.

A Linux client Kickstarter would make the most sense. Set a price and if we can fund it, do it.

3 reasons why a linux version is likely to never happen.

1.) 1.68% of desktop/laptop market share ( statcounter )
LmQltfx.png
2.) 13 different versions of Linux distributions, and a plethora of derivation of each one, so which one should they work on ?

( warning, BIG list ahead )
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1b/Linux_Distribution_Timeline.svg

3.) Linux users are more likely to use Wine, or double boot so why bother ?

Honestly, grow up and give it a rest, not gonna happen.
No one is pointing a gun at any Linux user and ask them to use ONLY Linux ! If you are so stubborn as to only use one OS for whatever reason you can only blame yourself if not everything you want runs on it.
Most Linux users point out at steam sudden burst of Linux compatible games. But have they noticed that the burst has stopped ?
The only reason why some developers suddenly gained interest in linux was because Valve tried ( and failed miserably ) to steal the market from MS after the Win 8 fiasco.
But after the BIG flop of the steam machines that worked on Steam OS, another Linux based OS, big developers again stopped developing on Linux.
You will find small indie games, but not a lot of big games.

I'm not saying this out of Linux hate, I couldn't care less if Frontier decided to port the game on Linux, Kudos to them if they do. It is just that just like some apple users, Linux users seem to be borderline fanatical about it ! And I'm sick of it !

Linuxians must somehow understand that their OS is not the best OS only because it is free or open source !
A LOT of people don't want to bother with it, and they must understand this.
