Elite:Dangerous for Linux?

I'm never first to this party... It took me a couple years before i found out there was an Elite II.. Frontier blew my mind. I knew there would never be another game to get as close to amazing as that game did. First Encounters (a pioneer in texture mapping back then), it's tortured little brother, was no less impressive and amazing as Frontier before it.. That Braben and Co. had to be subjected to the poopooshow that was Gametek back then still, for its fans, didn't take the spirit out flying over the beaches of First Encounters. We all knew it could have been so much more.

I'm glad Elite: Dangerous was crowdfunded.. It is the finest piece of space simulation art i've ever experienced! Now that I finally get to play Elite: Dangerous (and not have to pay a microsoft tax), I'm not sure how I'll ever want to play another game. I am glad to have gotten it working with steam relatively easily. I'll at least show up in FD's stats now as a linux pilot.

And sorry to those mac folks that never got Horizons.. I've been playing it for hours under Debian now with literally 0 issues.

Thank you Lutris, Valve, the Proton, WINE, and DXVK communityies, thank you to the open source community here that makes this seamless experience possible..

I look forward to flying with and among you Commanders, fenestrated and defenestrated alike!

Thank you so much! Just short of a native linux client for the game, this is literally a dream come true! I am so glad I get to experience the further evolution of my all time favorite game series of all time!

xoxo!

Hi Victor, I'm a Linu Mint user myself. I have Lutris installed. Do you have a link to getting the game running in Lutris/Wine or whichever it needs?

ED Horizons is already installed via proton.

I'd start here,

there's a link to a github wiki in the top post with lots of detail on how to do it for Steam and Lutris. I have it working under steam!

Just steam or steam within lutris?

I'm off to find that guide now·. thanks.

just steam, but used winetricks instead of protontricks.. I was following your adventures in the other thread, weird! I didn't have any of those problems. i hope you figure it out soon if you haven't already. cheers!

Thank you I am able to play. The framerate is not great as my graphics card struggles to cope with the overhead but I get about 20fps in asteroid fields and 30+ fps everywhere else. I don't PVP at all and so it's playable at those framerates.

I'm happy with my processor, event though it's old It's really not the bottleneck and wiht it being a K I have overclockign headroom left ( it's currently at 4.2ghz on a freezer pro 7 - I can push it further. ) if my motherboard will take it I will put a GTX1660 in it by the end of summer and that should help things along nicely.

Congratulations on being able to ditch windows but not the galaxy, Commander. I'm proud to fly with you, with all of you!! \o/

I seem to have broken my elite dangerous install. I was playing earlier today but then removed dotnet40 from another pfx and now my elite pfx doesn't work.

the add/remove programs suggests that dotnet40 is installed ( client and extended) but the game tells me it can't find dotnet40.
I tried to remove it but it just says "installation failed"
I tried to force a reinstall but it just says "Installation failed".

Is there an easy way to fix this? Can I just delete the elite prefix in compatdata ? If I do will steam just generate a defualt one?

I've deleted the prefix in the steam compatdata folder. Then run elite dangerous to create a new prefix - this worked.
I then removed vrun2015 and reinstalled it
I then put back dxvk and dotnet40 and changed the compatibility to win 7

Running winetricks or elite dangerous still produced the "can't find dotnet framework 4" error.
Have deleted Elite and am reinstalling

weird.

you shouldn't need to delete Elite and reinstall. deleting the prefix and reinstalling that stuff should be enough. Also, you don't need to install dxvk, since proton already does. vrun2015 dotnet40 win7 ought to be all.

There are a couple weird errors the very first time you start it afterwards, but they can be ignored, nor do they show up again.

Oh well.. I shall give it another try once it's reinstalled. Deleting the prefix was not sufficient. I installed dotnet40 in my default prefix in wine so I wonder if something got crossed over in Wine's brainpan

Yay it's working again - seems the trick is to ignore the warnings about not finding dotnet. the client tooka while to start up but once it did it now starts every time and having gone throught he whole process again, in the correct order on a clean install of the game I'm now getting better frame rates - oh despite proton having dxvk by default using winetricks to force whatever version is newest over the top helps. as does removing all the vcrun stuff installed by default and then just reinstalling vcrun2015.

I'm now happy to help guide the next person who wants to try this.

sigh..

It doesn't beat a native version. but by God I'll take it.

Thanks again WINE, Proton, DXVK, and winetricks communities. Thanks Eagleboy and redmcg, lutris, tkg, and all the other community members that make playing my dream game possible.

And to Frontier Developments, for all the money they're getting out of me despite their best efforts, a hearty you're welcome!
