Elite Dangerous: Horizons and Future Updates

Procedural generation = a boring game, lacking in interest and originality, just look at the planets.....! It's like Americans, they all look the same - fat with perfect teeth ..... Sorry guys I don't mean it really some of you look normal like us Brits fat with screwed up teeth ;-)

Lol... I'm only fat-ish. But seriously, procedural generation isn't my favorite thing either but it is pretty necessary when producing content of this scope. All of the Diablo games have had procedurally generated dungeons and those have been some fairly compelling games. They have procedural generation with some very specific rules and that is similar to what Frontier is doing. I think that Frontier has done a nice job of generating the universe but has been lacking when it comes to generating the missions. I can only assume that they have been so busy with patches and expansions that they haven't had time to go back and adequately address these issues, but... who knows.

Honestly, I'd really like it if they could take the time to produce more custom content in places that need it. It's a shame that you don't see custom starports and bases at the HQ for major factions. Also, it would be nice to see some difference for the systems that you receive special permits for. Nothing took the wind out of my sails quite like heading to Summerland for the first time and finding... the same stuff. I would have been thrilled to find something even slightly different at these places... maybe just change the starport lighting to red or something... I dunno.... or maybe have missions that are exactly the same as at other places but with different flavor text and slightly higher profit margins... sigh.

I haven't played for a while nor posted on this forum.
While the potential of horizons appeals landing on barren planets is not for me.
This isn't enough to tempt me back. But I'm looking, I am looking...

FDev be like, "Behold our creation! We programming Gods have created worlds for you to visit, views take in at sunset and sunrise, canyons and caves! 1:1 size planets to drive around in your buggies at high speed!"

Gamerz be like: "Yeah, yeah, very good, now about that Federal Corvette....."

;)

First real screenshot of a planet surface, taken from today's newsletter:

It looks realistic, yet very dull due to the endless rolling hills and emptiness. I guess this is what most planets without atmospheres are like. Would like to see valleys, huge mountains, cliffs, vulcanism, ice.

I don't think all of them will be this boring. An airless world will have craters where meteors have struck directly and furrows where they come in at an angle. Some will be like this, I'm sure, but not, I think all by a long shot. But then I am just guessing here.

I don't know... I somehow like this picture!

Sure, it is dark. And sure - it is somehow dull and doesn't give away much of the expected surface structures.

But the whole "ED experience" is about story arcs. And this dark screenshot represents exactly our current state of knowledge and our hopes about the future. An apparitional impression, nothing concrete for now. But the promis of a dawn already visible at the horizon, uncovering a fully lit planetary surface with all the exciting structures we hope for...
The picture is part of an unfolding narrative, so to say - and it is just the beginning! I am looking forward to how this narrative will evolve! :)

And regarding its dullness... well, FD tries to apply the laws of physics to their stellar forge. And while there definitely will be quite a bit of rough terrain features and enough "vertical landscape" for everybody's taste, many moons and planets will be dull and without outstanding structures! I am afraid, this is, how the universe is made... it is not all mind-blowing grandiosity...

Have some rep. This is what a lot of people don't understand. They want space travel and solar systems to be and look interesting all the time. Unfortunately, that just doesn't happen except in an arcade game. From my experience this is about as far from an arcade game as you can get. Especially if you turn off Flight Assist.

Don't forget the scale of planets is supposed to be 1:1 if that is so you can have everything from flat or rolling areas to vast mountain ranges to deep canyons ...sky's the limit on a true to scale planet or moon.

1.4 CQC Update:

CQC (1.4) Beta was released for PC and Mac on the 1st September. It's recommended you read the very long change log here.

Two small updates re: Beta testing and 'mass testing' of 1.4 as per Dev Update on 3rd September.

  • Beta on PC/Mac will last a period of 2 weeks.
  • After the second week of Beta there will be a "stage of mass testing before releasing the update. This will work in a similar fashion to the gamma phase before launch and will be available to all players to help stress test the game and the servers. Like the beta, this will take place on the test servers and no progress will be carried over but the benefit is that all players get to practice their close Quarter Combat skills before the official release (where having ready honed skills may work in your favour)."

Update: 4th September

  • There will be core changes to the weapons system in the basic game. [Link]
  • Looting will be available in the basic game. However other looting will only be available to Horizons. [Link]
  • GPP3 - last beta for XBO brings it to equal footing to 1.4 Beta 2 release

lets make a system with flat planets!

i hope you all can laugh at this as i did.

Planetary landings were never promised for launch, nor was it ever implied that they'd be free. It was always known that they were going to be a paid expansion.

I am not, however, thrilled about having to pay again for atmospheric landings. This is something that had better change, or I will probably be buying neither.

*** Going atmospheric is a different league in coding and will need lots of resurces to create a proper atmospheric environment. FD will need money for keeping the development up and make the necessary steps one after the other towards the vision they have. I'm perfectly fine with two purchases and hope they'll do it amazing like the rest of the game so far! You'll not be disappointed either!
