It's not really tree pulp, don't worry, it's actually an acronym....

Persistent Appearance Perceived and Reality.

It's all the rage with the cool kids.

Its too bad that crappy Eve game is THE Oculus ship game

PCGAMER UK runs a 'Played it' article this month on ED by Andy Kelly.

Andy has been playing the alpha and the article is full of praise about ED. Half of the two-page article is devoted to how well ED plays with Oculus Rift, '..feels handcrafted for the headset.'

Quote: After having a go Chris said, 'Well, I never want to play anything else ever again.'

And PCGAMER now correctly says that ED will be out 'in 2014.' :D

Crappy how? Looking forward to it myself... 100% made for VR game with no effort, thought, or consideration wasted on anything else... The entire design is VR only from the floor up. Partnered with Oculus themselves... It's going to be a showcase game. Doesn't mean it'll be good, but certainly something worth a little anticipation.

I'm sure ED and SC will be great too of course.

It's a bit annoying that they rave about a device that consumers won't be able to get for almost 2 years. Why not base comments on tech readily available today? ED doesn't need OR to be cool, does it?

TrackIR has been around for a decade now, AND you wont get motion sickness + you can see your keyboard/drink - so IDK why OR is getting so much hype since TrackIR seems more practical.

Because it's a better experience. If you just want the game play advantages, get trackir. If you want a whole other experience, to actually feel like you're in the game world and be awed by your surroundings, then get the Rift.

Because OR is the closest thing we have to jacking in to the matrix so far...and TrackIR isn't. ;)

TrackIR makes it possible to look around the cockpit with your head working as a "controller". Which is nice.

Oculus Rift makes it possible to feel like you are actually inside the game. Which is just plain awesome!:D

I already feel like that with the TrackIR and 30" monitor. I also don't find motion sickness to be that great of an "experience", though I heard that is being worked on.

In any case, "better" is subjective. People with kids or constant interruptions will find taking on/off those big goggles a nuisance, as well as knocking their drink over the keyboard because they can't see it. One thing is for certain, there are a lot more people enjoying TrackIR than there are people enjoying OR (that's just because the consumer version isn't out yet) - but that's the point, why not give credit where credit is due and at least mention a peripheral that's been around for a decade before the OR?

I'm in no doubt that ED with OR is a great experience. OR is on my must-buy list when it's released.

But .... it's not available to consumers. Only today, we received confirmation from the horse's mouth that it's still At Least 18 months away.

so now we have the OR vs trackIR debate in every thread - great stuff

well i have a trackIR thing on my desk (after leaving it in one of the offices for a few weeks) and cannot be asked to install/use it yet. but will do in time for sure.

OR ? no way i would use that! way to geeky and hmm it feels a bit like using one of those saitek faux-fighter sticks or a spray-on-tan if you know what i mean ;p

matrix = case as per @greatdismal and nothing else.

Where is that news, I haven't seen it?

@fourty6to3 - TrackIR has been around a decade and is still a niche product. VR steps things up from a mere peripheral to a complete experience overhaul. Sure, some may not get on with it even though the major issues leading to VR sickness have been worked out. As you say, if you're worried about knocking over your drink it's probably too dangerous for you! ;)

You have to try a Rift to really appreciate how fantastic it is. Since I got mine, I haven't even considered playing ED any other way.
It feels like wearing a pair of goggles admittedly, because you can see the black rims, but I just imagine the 'goggles' are part of my flight-suit.
I can only imagine how much better it will be when the consumer version is available, with HD and 6 degrees of movement.
I got my sister to try my OR. She doesn't play computer games at all, and even she was impressed. She did look at bit silly wearing it, but when you're using it, you can't see yourself anyway.
My only concern is how well it will work when the other features of ED are added, such as trading screens etc, because even with an X52, there aren't enough buttons for all of the functions (I can't touch-type), and the resolution of the dev kit it a bit too low to read some of the text.
Personally I haven't suffered any motion sickness.

It was a direct quote of Palmer Lucky on an NPR report today from SXSW this weekend (although we don't hear his voice directly):

http://www.npr.org/2014/03/10/288712948/path-to-televisions-future-may-be-paved-in-virtual-reality
03:25: "I am told, I spoke with one of the founders of OculusVR, Palmer Lucky and he said 18-20months we hope to actually get it into consumers hands and more people will have the amazing experiences I just had"

Those things you leaf through in shops and waiting rooms.
They have smartphones and tablets in shops nowadays?

Seriously though as a long time Trackir user that games at 5760x1080, I can't wait for the commercial version of the OR. Can't come soon enough.

There's a comment below that:

Just a FYI for anyone freaking out -- the estimated date range quoted in this story is INCORRECT. Palmer confirmed himself on reddit a few minutes ago that this is not a correct timeline for when to expect the consumer version, and is a misunderstanding.
So back to no concrete timeline at all ;) My previous point is still a sense of wonder at ED being reviewed to such an extent on a product that's not available to consumers. OR needs just 1 supply-chain hiccup for the 18-20 month estimate to turn out seeming remarkably astute.

...because even with an X52, there aren't enough buttons for all of the functions (I can't touch-type).

Don't forget you can multiply all of the 23 buttons (not including 3x 8-way hat switches and 7 axes) by 3 using the 3 different modes. If you think that you can multiply all those again by use of the pinkie, you can have 23x3x2=138 buttons, which should keep you going if you can remember them all, bearing in mind different buttons will likely have a different output when in a menu system.
