No, it's people like you who are missing the whole playing the game thing. Many people play games to actually be good at them, in a measurable way, which games are made for in the first place.
Off-topic about tangible/comparable progression:
I thought three of the objectives of ED was to become ranked Elite in Combat, Exploration & Trading. As is working with other CMDRs to help minor factions improve & expand. Being a feared pirate/killer with an enormous bounty on your head.

Having lots of credits is indeed a goal too, it shows you can earn lots of credits. Having more credits makes other goals easier to obtain, but is not a prerequisite

Games primary function is to have fun, especially if you are suppose to play them. If your primary goal is to compete in them then I think you are mixing this up with sports. :p

Now, games can of course be a sport, but they don't have too be.

Ok...that's enough wordplay for today. :D

A big problem at the moment is that to get better gear for obtaining other goals, you have to trade.
Still off-topic about progression:
I'll repeat myself: you don't need lots of credits or better gear to obtain the other goals:

  • Combat ranking needs a basic Sidewinder only, go kill ships. Obtain bounties and/or pirate cargo to earn bonus credits. Upgrading your ship and/or components assists in attacking bigger ships for bigger bounties and cargo. Bounty-hunting in an Eagle at Navs & RES' earn 150k-200k/hr and gets dozens of kills/hr towards the Elite Combat rank.
  • Explorer ranking needs a basic Sidewinder, stripped of non-essentials, go explore. Sell data to buy better FSDs. Continue exploring.
  • Helping a minor faction needs a basic Sidewinder, go do anything that helps the faction: missions, kills, trade, etc.
  • Getting a huge bounty needs a basic Sidewinder, go out and be a nuisance, and know when to run (like with any ship).

Trading earns you credits faster than other professions, yes. But for any goal other than being rich, it doesn't matter. Having few credits doesn't prevent you from doing anything.

So a game of chess is not competitive, but is a sport then? Riiiiiight! If you want to wordplay, at least get it write! :)

Getting further off-topic:
When I am playing Chess with a mate, I aim to win as it's the sole goal of the game. However that isn't the reason I choose to play Chess; I play it because I want to play Chess (and chat) with my mate - not because I want to beat them at it.

And I thought Chess has been a competitive sport for a good few decades now?

reach your goal before dying either of boredom or old age, you may want to get the best equipment for the job first.
For the Combat Elite rank, how is killing other ships in an expensive ship (Conda, Python etc) more fun and much quicker than in an Eagle or Viper?
For the Explorer Elite rank, how is scanning other systems in an expensive ship (Asp) more fun and much quicker than in an Sidewinder or Hauler?
For being a pirate/killer, how is racking up bounties (fines) in an expensive ship more fun and much quicker than in any cheap ship?

It's pretty sad you consider that okay.
Why?

Competitive game, not a sport IMHO. It all gets very "matter of opinion" as to what is a sport but I generally agree with the first line of wikipedia - "Sport (or sports) is all forms of usually competitive physical activity". Of course, where does that leave darts, snooker, shooting, etc. It could be argued that they all have a physical component that cannot be done any other way (e.g. someone with no physical movement could play chess, but not those other games/sports) but I tend to think of a real sport as being something that involves a modicum of exertion, the other ones I see as games. Chess (again IMHO) fails as a "sport" on all counts - it's a game where, as you say, the primary goal is to beat your opponent.

I should have guessed you would come along. ;)

As I said:

Now, games can of course be a sport, but they don't have too be.

And as already mentioned above, yes chess is indeed a sport when played in a competitive fashion according to some. (Seems to be quite the hot topic on the internet though...hehe :))

All of this is of course has of course steered way off course since the original thing I commented on was that Dissentient doesn't feel that he can "progress" when playing the game since he asserted that:

Many people play games to actually be good at them, in a measurable way, which games are made for in the first place.

Now, the first part of that sentence I have no problem with. What I commented on was the second and marked part. Games aren't made to be competitive in the first place. They are first and foremost made to be fun, the competitive aspect is secondary and optional.

Anyway...

That's arguable too. Who's to say what's in the mind of a game's creator - one could say that a game could be made, first and foremost, to be competitive which, in turn, many would enjoy.

Chicken/egg/pointless! :)

For combat elite rank, bigger ships with higher DPS allows you to destroy ships significantly faster.

For explorer rank, you definitely need detailed surface scanner (at least doubles your income, which is what gives you exploration ranks) and advanced discovery scanner significantly increases your efficiency. One is 250k, another is 1.5M. And you want to have an ASP because of the jump range, which is around 15M.

Being pirate/killer has no merits whatsoever so if you want to waste your time, you can do it in whatever ship you want.

The point is, if you trade first to get the appropriate gear, you will reach your desired rank way faster than just getting straight into exploration/combat.

Actually, due to the costs of degradation on the Asp, I feel that the Cobra is actually the best explorer vessel and that the Intermediate Discovery Scanner + Surface Scanner is the most fun combination. The Advanced Discovery Scanner takes all the skill and fun out of the thing.

Nothing needs anything more than a basic sidewinder, even trading. But if you want to reach your goal before dying either of boredom or old age, you may want to get the best equipment for the job first.

I feel sad you get bored so easily; I love 'the grind'.
