Elite Dangerous is not a sandbox

Apologies if I didn't see these during this long thread, but:

Eve = "And when he saw the breadth of his domain, he wept for there were no more worlds to conquer"

Elite Dangerous = "the more you try to tighten your grip, the more star systems will slip between your fingers".

Yet another metagaming thread........ ;)

"creativity" as far as I can see it in this thread consists of reading the feature list of another game and asking for it in this one.

What is it they say about imitation? :)

As long as these features fit the game world I don't see a problem with that.
Indeed.

Hats, please.

Instead of "Sandbox MMOs" above, should it not read "EVE Online"?

We can control our actions, we can own our ships, weapons and cargo and we can build our reputations.

so you can control your World of Warcraft dwarf running around in an open world, control his gear and inventory content, grind reputation points, again I guess that totally makes WoW actually a sandbox MMO instead of a themepark MMo right? How could we not see it, all this years! This is a revolutionary revelation!

Anyway some people didn't want Eve with cockpits, but they want the cool *buzzword* "sandbox MMO" for ED?

the bigotry is strong with this thread, because you can't hate EvE with cockpits and at the same time want a sandbox MMO.

This thread still going? :)

It was an open and shut case.
I'm pretty sure I closed the case on page 36.
Who opened it again?

Sandbox = Open World = Free roam = Elite Dangerous.

I'm shutting it again now in a stronger case.

You're going to have to use a stronger case than that to close a nonsense thread this close to 5pm on a Friday afternoon ;)

For me, you are correct on your first point, and incorrect on your second point. ED isn't an MMO* (as far as MMO's are currently understood) and you can have the term sandbox all to yourself if you want. I don't care about the labels, I care about the game.

*Beyond the fact that it's Massive, Multiplayer, and Online.

I don't care what if it doesn't fit someone's tiny pigeon hole of a category it's going to be an amazing game.

Maybe we shouldn't feed the troll...

I don't believe that the OP is a troll, I think he is just someone who want's something different to what Elite is, Not everyone who disagrees with the game design is a troll ... (I could be wrong tho' :))

Unbelieable! This sudden influx of sandbox MMOs!
WoW, Guild wars 2, Rift, SWTOR!

Who would have thought the sandbox definition is so obvious and themepark MMOs never existed! Open world, free roam

So doing a bunch of quests, delivering chicken eggs to the dwarf family or delivering 100 tons of wheat to a starving planet is now officially "sandbox MMO".
Alrighty

AFAIK, there are only three criteria that a game needs to meet in order to qualify as a sandbox:

1: there are no artificial barriers in the world. No invisible walls, no unjumpable waist high fences, and no unpassable shrubberies. There may be artificial boundaries at the world border, but once in the world, you should be able to move anywhere, within the limits of the game engine.

2: the player can choose their own goals in the game. There is no predefined plot to the game, no coded quest the player must follow. The player can do whatever she likes, without artificial penalties imposed by the game developer for going "off script." This doesn't mean that there can't be in-game quests (like rescuing your kidnapped family members in Sid Meier's pirates), it just means you don't have to follow them, and are not penalized for doing so.

3: there is no scripted ending to the game. In theory, the player can keep playing the game until the heat death of the universe if she wants, but the player is the one who chooses when the game ends, not the game developer.

We're getting hung up on the definition of "sandbox" - the definition of which is only really relevant to the proposal by the OP to include a whole load of features from EVE Online (because of the fact that E: D has been called a sandbox game and in the OP's opinion is not).

To me, the discussion really centres around whether such features should be included - my vote would be not now and if ever then after the planetary landing and "out of the cockpit" expansions.

For a second time. ED will be more of a sandbox when it launches than eve was when it launched. And after 10 years of development, ED might be more of a sandbox than EvE is now. ;)

If you have played EvE from the start, you can easily understand that.
