Elite Dangerous is not a sandbox

For some it's getting from point A to point B & others it's the journey.

I'm packing a picnic basket and going to watch to space cows!

I've read many of the design archives, and I just don't see any other game mechanics there other than grinding your way by doing NPC missions to gain Elite rank in solo, by fighting, trading, mining and mapping.

Well... if that's all you see in this. (which is a lot when there's 200 billion stars,) perhaps the initial game isn't going to be for you?

-- although I kind of doubt you read it very clearly, given the fact that a few posts ago you thought elite status was merely having a 'maxed out' ship. --

Well, good for your picnic. I will grind my way to the best ship in 30 hours and be disappointed if there is nothing else to keep me busy, and I'll switch the game. I bet there are many others who are doing the same.

The vast majority of people do basically that no matter what the game.

To resign yourself to paying 50-60 bucks for something, merely to grind a 'level' is a pretty defeatist attitude.

There are a lot of games out there, I intend to play many of them. This one, however, I wouldn't go into with a grinder mentality. It would defeat the entire purpose.

What difference does it make? EVE has 2499 star systems and people have been playing it for years. It's the game mechanics that matter, not the amount of star systems. That being said, I still think that it's cool that Elite has 200 billion stars.

But.. But... EVE!

(circular argument)

We all have different goals and expectations from the game, there is no "right" or "wrong" way, this is one of its strengths I believe. Personally, I played FFE for years and was trundling around in a fully blinged out Panther leaving starving planets in my wake, but my combat rating was "Poor"; mainly from pirates silly enough to get into turret range.

Ok. So then PLEASE enlighten me, what is the purpose of this game?

Since you like EVE so much, (and I do too,) what do you tell a noob after they get their starter ship and completed tutorials when they ask "OK, what do I do now? What's the point of this game?"

It happens all the time on the help channel doesn't it? You know the answer. "Whatever you want to do."

The mechanics are different, but the idea is the same.

All that you are describing means nothing. Please give me practical examples. What is there to do in the game besides grinding your way from your starting ship to the ship you wanted by trading goods from A to B or fighting?

How about you give us some practical examples of what features such as crafting or station ownership bring to the table other than more grinding.

There IS no best ship. There is no end game. There is only a grind if you want there to be one.

The word has been bandied around, but it's a sandbox to do with exactly as you please. Kill everyone. Own ALL the money there is. Become the most feared pirate of all time. Kill more pirates than everyone else combined. Do nothing. Do everything.

You can't win Elite!

The same as any game. To entertain.

Indeed. I think some folks forget that too often.

One of my favorite 'games' is Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It's certainly not about goals (although there are some add-ons to give them to you that are fun) it's about the experience.

FSX is a drastic example, but it's kept my attention far longer than pretty much any other 'game' I've ever played. It's about the journey.

Thats what I was trying to tell you in my previous post man. If you have played the previous elite games I think you would understand.

There is no end goal, no narration, no story that you need to follow. In the Elite games, you make your own story, the game is a canvas for it.

If you think that a game should be designed to keep you busy, I really think that Elite is not the game for you man. You make your own fun in this game.

To give you an example of how this works.

A player sees a station and goes there to trade stuff.
Another player sees a station, and thinks about camping it for a juicy trader so that he can follow him in to the next system and rob him blind.
A third player sees a station and proceeds to use it as a playground for acrobatic maneuvering.
A fourth player sees the third and writes a lore newsfeed about him, making him both famous and wanted for wingman duties..
..and it goes on and on...

Elite is going to be a game rich in content and features. But in the end, Elite is really what you make of it. From what you are telling us, it looks like you want to have your hand held for the ride, not play a true sandbox game.. ;)

And this is where we disagree. In EVE you have someone in the help channel saying "you do whatever you want to do, and I will help you to achieve that!" And then you find your social networks and game mechanics that keep you playing for years.

In Elite no one is going answer to you, and you are realasing that all there is to do, is to get the ship you always wanted and the rank that you wanted by trading, fighting, mining and mapping.

Does it need to have a purpose more than it can be fun for some people.
It might not appeal to someone but to others it will.

No one is forcing anyone to play any games they don't like.

It seams you have made up your mind and decided that this game is nothing for you.

This hole discussion about the game is just ridicules.
Ive seen it on nearly every forum ive been on for various games.
The likers and the haters. But I still cant figure out for my mind why the haters still stay and post rubbish on a forum for a game they never gona play.

if I don't like a game I just move on, I don't have any need to vent. its just childish behaviour.
