Elite Dangerous is the Largest Empty Sandbox Ever Made

Skimmed through this thread and read a few key sections. A few points I want to comment on.

First, I fully support and only play in Solo mode. I play Elite to relax and for me multi-player games are not relaxing, particularly if they involve some form of combat. I enjoy trading and exploring and building up my ships and Solo lets me do that without any hassle or complication. For me Elite is similar to Euro Truck simulator in a space setting with much nicer graphics. The day that Solo mode is removed or crippled is the day I go play something else. Happily this seems unlikely but I just want to add my voice to support Solo mode.

Second, the game truly is great. I don’t sink hundreds of hours into games that are no good and this game has held my attention for a long time already. Of course it isn’t perfect, but it is clear that FD is invested in the game and is reaching out to the community for constructive feedback. People need to be patient. A lot of folks really underestimate how difficult it is to do software development and put unrealistic pressure on developers. We all want to see parts of the game get better, but this will always take time. I hope FD realizes that many of us do appreciate their work and efforts even if at times they aren’t getting everything right.

Ironically enough, I think one of the best ways to help make Elite better is to focus on gameplay threads on this forum. Ask questions about stuff you can’t find in game, talk about challenges that you are having in game. Share stuff you have learned, stuff you enjoy or things that aren’t working. How are you making money? What’s a good role for a Beluga or a Type-9? How was your experience ranking up to get that Corvette? I bet the developers could learn a lot more about how Elite is played and could be improved from gameplay based discussions than from threads complaining about a lack of sand. I for one try to focus on starting threads that are related to gameplay, even if tangentially it may have an implicit criticism of a part of the game I feel isn’t as great as it could be.

It will be interesting to find out if the guild ships are basically what was being discussed.

I honestly believe the fleet carriers/squadrons are going to be disappointing for the Hopes & Dreams of the guildies. But we have at least a year to find out.

Sounds like it to me, there'll be wailing and gnashing of teeth if executive control means they can't be parked in Eravate with orders to kill all noobs.

Can't rep you again :(

The good thing is, once that is out of the way they can continue with the real stuff.

Have some +rep for a decent post.
Thank you. :D

Player driven economy was something which was never put forward in the design of this game. I've been here since 2014 and have never heard anyone from Frontier say a player driven economy was on the cards, nor have I seen that in any of their promotional material.

As I said in my prior post, some of this is all down to my own hype/high expectations (maybe DB is just that good at selling/marketing, lol). This is a case where, to me, being able to affect the BGS, being able to affect a system you are trading in because has a direct impact on the market.. that, to me is a form of player driven economy - my imagination just took it to a whole different level. Even if it's not at the level I expected; I do expect to have the tools in the game to be able to make the most of it (don't even get me started on this absurd notion that an intergalactic civilisation can function without some form of FTL communication and need traders to transmit market data from one station t'other hehe) and whilst we do have some tools.. they simply weren't good enough. Having to leave the game to get certain information, for me, shows a big failure on Frontier's part around trading.

As for having an impact on how your actions impact the galaxy - well, Elite has always been about 'you are one pilot and their ship' - it's a big galaxy. You will never be the Hero Of The System (or the galaxy for that matter). You're only ever going to have a small and insignificant effect on the BGS/galaxy.
I knew going in I'd not be the hero; and I like that about games. I hate being the centre of attention; so knowing I'm not was very appealing. However, one thing I did have in mind during BETA (apart from HOLY HELL I'M IN SPACE AND EVERTHUNG! :D ) was being able to start a trading company; running a trading company and being able to use the game to show me the supply/demand of the system I am in and work that to my advantage. We have some tools, but.. it's just not enough. See my example of a line graph. I would ADORE a feature like that in the game. Especially if they implemented an API to go with it so I could write my own "Elite Dangerous Trading Company" software :p

But I do agree with you on one point - Frontier do always come out with "THIS IS VERY EXCITING!" and "I'M VERY EXCITED FOR THIS NEXT <thing>!", and I too am always feeling somewhat underwhelmed when a release is made. There's a honeymoon period of "ooohhh shiny!" but once that's over with, then the next stage is always "it's a pity that [X/Y/Z] wasn't included with this" - case in point, multicrew, and to-date a very limited amount of stuff to do on planet surfaces.

The honeymoon period is a very good comparison. Unfortunately, mine ended rather quickly - a few weeks after release in fact. I've been stubborn and persistent since then; I've tried really hard. I really have. :p
But I am patient. If they don't have it now, they'll have it later. So I can wait and play other things in the meantime (off topic: Tyranny is awesome, give it a try).

I backed at Premium Beta level so I have the Lifetime Expansion Pass, which means I'll get the expansions anyway. I also do, on occassion, purchase the odd cosmetic item but that's limited to what I see as cool stuff for my favourite ships and I'm certainly never going to be purchasing items for my avatar.

I have this weird fetish for cosmetics.. seriously. If a game has 'em, I buy 'em. lol

It will be interesting to find out if the guild ships are basically what was being discussed.

Based on their early drafts detailing the imperial navy ORBAT I somehow suspect that back then they had no idea what they were talking about/planning regarding capital ships and are going to shoe horn this as another kickstarter goal met.

Elite: Dangerous Newsletter #29 - From Frontier Developments - 2014

We plan to follow that same incremental development philosophy that we’ve done throughout our Alpha and Beta phases, and continue to significantly enhance the game via further expansions post-launch.

We do intend to release small, free updates after launch, but expansions that include significant new features and content will be charged for separately. For example, our current roadmap is to add (in no particular order):

  • Landing/ driving / prospecting on airless rocky planets, moons & asteroids
  • Walking around interiors and combative boarding of other ships
  • Combat and other interactions with other players and AIs in the internal areas of star ports
  • Accessing richly detailed planetary surfaces
  • Availability of giant ‘executive control’ ships to players

Ok, note - do not try to quote in bullet lists. It does terrible things.

1. Still waiting
2. Still waiting.
3. Isn't this what Gankers and Scramming NPC's do all the time?
4. Planets are accessible, and they do have some details... still not quite "rich" yet, but getting there.
5. The Gnosis anyone?

It seems some of these things have come to pass. Perhaps not in their final, polished form, but 3 out of 5 in some form....

I log into ED a couple minutes a week, buy a random cosmetic and log out .
That's my way of being grateful and supportive of a company that delivered an unique experience, hundreds of hours worth.
I don't expect much coming from it though.

More trading tools have been announced for 2018. :)

I think if it provides streamlined in game communication among members of a squadron it would be a great improvement.

What is going to be interesting is the way to control megaships. Do you give it orders? If so, who does? The leader of a squadron?

They messed up with me by giving me all the black ship skins when I bought horizons on black Friday without realizing what day it was, now I look at cosmetics and think not anywhere near as good as my Hotblack Desiato freebie.

I see the Gnosis mentioned here a few times and just wanted to point out that (afaik) it's nothing new or special. There are a whole bunch of megaships that get moved around by Frontier (https://canonn.science/codex/megaship-flight-operations/). Also, these are no different to Jaques station (before it jumped to its current location) which used to move around years ago and on which players could also happily hitch a lift.

I know.
But, it probably won't meet my expectations anyway.. lol.

This is why I'm excited for next year. I really can't wait to see how they improve on the features.

Though, C&P isn't looking promising. They want to talk C&P but they don't want to look at criminality itself.. so that rings one or two serving-bell sized alarms :p

Here's a video of David Braben saying "it would be disappointing if you landed on a planet and it was just a differently coloured height map"

LOL

That's still not early days like 2012 but 2014... Fair enough though. You can have your ‘executive control’ after I get

Walking around interiors and combative boarding of other ships
Combat and other interactions with other players and AIs in the internal areas of star ports
Accessing richly detailed planetary surfaces
;)

I agree with that sequence for delivery :)
