Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?

"Odyssey will not be VR-compatible."

I only play this game in VR (and bought my entire set up specifically for this reason) and have no interest whatsoever in going back to 2d; my immersion in the world through VR is where my enjoyment of the game comes from, and it's one of the things that really sets this title apart. Not supporting the VR community in this update we've all been keenly anticipating for years is very disappointing to put it mildly. I was very excited yesterday, now I'm the opposite, please rethink this. (even if you only allow people to fly around and not walk in VR, so we can at least experience atmospheric planets and landings. Can you at least provide some new content for VR users? We've been waiting 2 years for this.) Ditching this community is a mistake.

No VR for Odyssey? Honestly, I don't see the point in buying Odyssey. If I have to wait for the ed VR version in 2022 (and I'm not sure it will happen), I would look at Star Citizen. If I have to change the game, it will be for SC, more modern and more advanced. But none of them have RVs ... yet. 😡
I agreed with you up to the Star Citizen part. :)

All these people who complain about VR absence need to turn their brain on think a little. I played ED in VR too and lets be honest it's completely different experience, but it's core is around the fact that you are seated. As in any other simulator.

If new update assumes competitive fps combat, npc & pvp (and it does) it's kinda naive to think it can be done in both 2D and 3D at the same time. How do you want to build a gameplay around VR folk who what ... teleport on a legde like in Half-Life: Alyx? Teleport or slide on few km surface on a planet? ... Riiiight.

Think multicrew, 2 people: one in VR, and second one with K+M landing on a station and decide to go to the bar to get drunk. While VR guy will struggle to get out of the ship for a few minutes, hitting walls, rotating head, choosing where to teleport, etc. K+M guy will be long drunk in a bar. The speed + precision of things you can do with these two fundamentally different approaches to movement / playing are just too different.

Those types of issues are just unsolvable since VR is quite experience for 1) the seated 2) or between VR and VR player only.
Apparently you do not know what the hell you're talking about, I play the forest in VR with my son who plays "flat" it works perfectly fine, serious Sam is another example. Most VR players do not want to teleport around, smooth locomotion is used with shooters.

No VR....
This feels like being ganked by FDev after coming from a several weeks exploration trip. Ganked successfully.
Well done.
While the statement was "not supported on launch", I sense something of a "never" behind the lines.
The first joy of the news of a new expansion was almost immediately switched to huge disappointment.
VR players are just not worth the effort.
I will continue playing ED until the expansion is available, but cannot imagine myself continuing afterwards. I would feel robbed. Or a second class person.
Second class citizen? Over a video game? That you will be able to play still?

Another thought... Whilst it is true VR are a niche over all... Estimates of around 3-4 mlion PCVR capable headsets in total... 2-3 pure PCVR headsets (excluding quest) . That is 2-3 .millioon players with rigs capable of playing ED.
Whilst a small percentage of pc gamers own a PCVR hmd.... I suspect a far far higher percentage of PCVR players own ED. Even now it is always in the top 10 (usually higher) best vr games on PC.

Which is why I believe PC players may have a higher VR population in ED than some think.

The only thing I can think of that might be a compromised experience..... no, let's just call it slightly clunky, is the transition from one control device, HOTAS/keyboard/mouse etc, to VR controllers, and back. But that is far from a deal breaker, and is probably 100% necessary and expected. What other reason might there be to suggest that this wouldn't work?

Greetings Commanders,

Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.

Ok, that's a show stopper for me, it was good while it lasted commanders.... see you on the next VR adventure..

How much does the average VR setup cost these days?
How many people have lost their jobs during this pandemic?
Very good point.

I obviously am focusing on the fact I cannot use VR. Even if I were the richest man on earth. My eyesight prevents it.

Yes, I think people forget that a lot of people who once could have got VR... Yeah not anymore. Times have changed, big.

The fact that we are getting legs so soon now is a shock to me alone. Nobody is getting cut off. We can all still play.

HOTAS works perfectly in VR for flying or walking in other games.

The very important aspect of this is that Frontier currently have a game on the market that is recognised at being the 'BEST' in one aspect - VR, and most pf the reviews of the game have mentioned this. Take that away and you lose a big part of the game's prestige, and prestige counts a lot more than pure number of players that regularly play in VR.
Last but not least: the VR players are (were) very committed to the game.
