Thanks for the info Tim. Can you confirm that the walking around part is not VR compatible? Or are you saying VR will be removed form the game completely? The latter will obviously cause some major issues for some. I wouldn't like to be stuck with just CQC for this VR space sim experience.

As long as I can fly down to these planets, or roam around in an SRV, then all good. I'll just switch to big screen for the on foot stuff.

Cheers
I think you can switch from VR to pancake only by restarting the game.
Think about it, now there is few launch options in launcher: "base game", "horizons" and "play in VR".
Also what would happen to VR reprojection when you toggle to legs mode, would it go black or something, many isuess there and one of them is also what kind of pc would handle full pancake resolution+VR at the same time...or that would mean some loading screen when cmdr leaving the chair.
I think it will be separate launch option as we have now that will not support any kind of VR never mind the mode you're into (on foot, on atmo planet or in space flying ship).

Just to add to this, VR will still be compatible with the base game and Horizons!
So if I understood correctly.
On the launcher there will be 3 options:
Elite Dangerous - Base game
Elite Dangerous - Horizons
Elite Dangerous - Odyssey

If I launch the first 2 I can fly the ship in VR
If I launch Odyssey there won't be any VR. I won't be able to see any atmospheric planet in VR even if I never get up from the chair.

Congratulations FDEV, you are really the number 1 to screw up things! (y)
Does anyone want my stuffz?

actually we are going back. If we can't play the functions we have now in VR (flying and SRV) in the Oddyssey launcher, it means we have to restart the game everytime we get out of our ship or SRV and back. That's going back.

I also think you're mistaking how many people are playing in VR.

Is there a chance you are mistaking it as well? Frontier has been known to go for things based on the wider audience. It could be very well that more people wanted legs content than those that use VR. Is it fair? I don't think it is, people got used to VR, but we have all become very familiar with how Frontier develops their games very iteratively over the years. They need to get something new out at this point and VR just likely wasn't a priority. First Person gameplay is a completely new system. They may very well plan on patching it on later like they did initially... or they may not. The same goes along with the ship/station interior calls. If it doesn't come with interior walking, it's likely because more people wanted gameplay over simple ship/station sightseeing.

This is all speculation on my part, but it's based on how they have developed the game. While it's upsetting to many people, it's not new. I think people are forgetting how this game has come together over the years. You're not seeing anything out of the ordinary here, all the way down to the announcement and the holding back of information.

I'd really like to get some expansion on the NO VR for space legs. first off, will Odyssey have any mechanics that do not include space legs, for instance, the long promised SRV variety. Second, Will I be able to play any VR if I load up the odyssey DLC. if the answer to either question is question is "no" how do I get a refund on my lifetime pass. When I purchased it I expected the game to at least keep the component of the game I purchased. I have little issue with not being able to use the "legs" portion of the game, I never felt that legs were needed for a space pilot's game. as Neil Armstrong said, "Pilots take no particular joy in walking. Pilots like to fly". if the first person to actually experience space leg fet this way, who am I to argue with him. Still I do expect the developers to add more than legs only for an expansion I was told would happen annually and to find out the first real benefit of my lifetime pass is totally excluded from me. This is not a game issue. If Frontier wants to take a new path with a 35 year classic let them. I will still have the core game of ED and Horizons to sustain the play I've come to expect. However, If Frontier has decided to totally make all future improvement out of reach for those who have dedicated time and finacial resources to the game then just be honest and ethical and refund me my pass purchase and let me decide with my dollars if I wish to play a game I never expected. this is not a rant against legs or pro VR it is just a plea for the developers to make some kind of equitable settlement with old players that they have chosen to abandon by taking a different path with this sim.

All of the VR players on here (like 10% of the playerbase) acting like they are entitled to VR space legs?? Why. Frontier have said that this would take up considerable resources which would mean more delays to launch.

Here is my message to you VR players:

YOU are a MINORITY of the playerbase and the MAJORITY will not accept delays to Space legs just so you can sweat it out in your £500 headsets. Get back in line and realise that you should be patient. Remember, Frontier have not ruled out VR in the future.

The next best option regarding VR would be similar to X-Plane - have the option to enable and disable VR while inflight via the press of a key. - I often use the monitor for pre flight and take off , then switch to VR as and when I like over scenic areas. - This might work well here too . Kill all the killin that needs to be done , return to your ship, enter the pilots chair , enable VR on the HOTAS , stick on the headset - Take off - No different to X-Plane

I'm curious. Have there been feature updates to the vanilla game after Horizons was launched? I have no experience with vanilla myself, I've only ever played Horizons.

What I'm after here is whether this means that for the VR users (who won't migrate over from Horizons to Odyssey), the game will effectively stop evolving once Odyssey launches and all future content updates will be applied as increments on top of Odyssey only? Or do the vanilla and Horizons versions still get new features, not just the mandatory maintenance updates to keep them compatible with a common back end that evolves according to Odyssey's roadmap?

Yes there has been, but if horizons continues to run on an old cobra engine (no confirmation but it's the current speculation than odyssey will be using a newer engine) then some of the new stuff may not make it.

The developers at 'Hello Games' must be jumping up and down with an abundance of joy after reading Frontiers confirmation of 'No VR support'. Well its NMS who will now have my full support and I look forward to enjoying all that their game provides; which is a considerable amount more than what Frontier can offer. Talk about how a small team of devs can put Frontier to shame. NMS is already a VR masterpiece and with each passing month improves even more. Elite Dangerous, on the other hand, appears to be going backwards... Your statement should read, "Odyssey anyone? We will not give you VR but our Frontier artists will work hard at giving you space-suit paint jobs: Ca-ching!, Ca-ching!"

Very cool statement, but if you actually believed a single word of what you just said, you would already be playing NMS for a long time, not waited until now to start "enjoying all that their game provides which is considerably more than what Frontier can offer".

That is THE question !

Yes, plenty.

Fleet Carriers - launching in a few days - are the most recent feature update which doesn't require Horizons to use ... prior to that:
- the Horizons season included passengers, some new ships, and a missions rewrite
- the Beyond season included new mining and exploration tools and content, squadrons, BGS updates, and a C&P rewrite
(I've not listed absolutely everything that can be done without Horizons from those expansions, just the big ones)

Oh really? What percentage of Elite players are using VR? Source?
Probably not a lot in percentage. But this is not a justification to remove something that is already in. It can only be a justification not to do it in the first place.
Removing VR from the cockpit when you simply fly your ship and just flying through atmospheric planet is a terrible plan because the engine can already do that. It's only the "leg" part of the update that is problematic.

This is so awesome thank you! I can't say how much I am looking forward to it!

To all the people that think this means it is now CS:GO or COD now are missing the point and I guess have never gone though the Elite story books, which have almost as many gun battles as space ones. This will only add to the universe and will not take anything away. It is not like flying your ship and space battles will not be important anymore! Duh.

I am hoping that we will get missions like disable the pirate ship and do a boarding action, and then have fire fight in order to complete the mission and take the pirate to jail.. also just as many options when it comes to hostage rescue. I am thinking the beginning of Star Wars IV when Dark Vadar storms the ship.
