ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

The next best option regarding VR would be similar to X-Plane - have the option to enable and disable VR while inflight via the press of a key. - I often use the monitor for pre flight and take off , then switch to VR as and when I like over scenic areas. - This might work well here too . Kill all the killin that needs to be done , return to your ship, enter the pilots chair , enable VR on the HOTAS , stick on the headset - Take off - No different to X-Plane

How dare you try to interject reason in the heated, rage filled feature demand!!

LOL

/sarcasm.

So does that mean just for the new DLC or AT ALL? is VR support going to be removed? Is there a required update that will remove VR support completely until it's [probably never] added back in at some future date?

Odyssey is not compatible with VR at Launch...
I guess that means exactly what it says on the tin, sorry.

So you think none of this new planetary tech is included free with horizons? I think they are trying to say that FPS and bunch of new stuff is coming, it will not be compatible with VR.

I would be surprised if I am blocked from exploring an atmospheric ice world 10,000LY out, just because I don't want to walk around in 2D.

We need to see how the mechanics work, exiting the ship etc. And get further info from the devs. I think they have a huge amount to reveal.

When I boot up the game, I select Elite Dangerous: Horizons VR.

When Odyssey is released. Will I have to select Elite Dangerous: Odyssey. Meaning I can't do anything in VR?

With apparently base building not even on the road map, I'll probably drop ED even before the release.
All I want is my own outpost out in the black.
How friggen hard could that possibly be to implement..? The short answer is not very.
I honestly have zero plans to move to VR so no heart break otherwise.

No personal outpost is enough reason for me to stop caring

Stop being sensible.
No room for that on this forum!

I really do love how "at launch" has somehow been interpreted as "never" by many posters, i mean sure its fine to be disappointed but honestly when you buy into developing industries (VR) you take this risk that's precisely why its expensive and also why (when taken on the whole) there really aren't that many VR titles in existence compared to basic 2D titles

So you are saying drop high end gear then. Thankfully the games industry is not generally so short sighted. (That said my game time has been on the NES and SNeS of late
No, I love my HTC Vive, I started ED in VR.
I am saying that many Commanders cannot afford VR, especially during this pandemic crisis. Hopefully VR will be available in the future. In my opinion, VR is the ultimate ideal. However, given the choice between more folks playing and the budget constraints of Frontier, I can sympathize that VR will currently not be implemented.

As it is, I have a feeling I will be buying Odyssey for friends who are out of work or can't otherwise afford it. And it will be my pleasure.

You can control a ship in VR with mouse. You can control an SRV turret in VR with mouse. I don't see why you can't make an FPS shooter that uses VR and mouse in the exact same way you already did twice...

All that would be different is you'd need an aim dot that's more responsive than turret servos and ship thrusters.

I could understand there's a lot more complication involved with creating a VR controller system, but if you're going to hold back on VR support, you should hold back on the controller aspect of it, not the part you already made that works.

Just to add you can already zip around as a bodiless soul via the external camera inside starports, hangars and such and that works perfectly. They just didn't want to implement VR support, and that will stay so. The decision must have been made a real long time ago, but they never dared to openly admit it. Any Humpty-Dumpty approach ("I mean every word exactly as I said it") won't help at all. "At launch" is either polite or a try at appeasement, the outcome stays the same.

O7,
🙃

It's more about how they are specifically mentioning that base Elite and Horizons will support it but Odyssey will not. As we well know, to get access to different content we need to launch the game in different clients essentially. So how it's written and how they reiterated it on the stream, the impression is that Odyssey will NOT have ANY VR enabled.
