Elite Dangerous: Odyssey | The Road To Odyssey Part 1 - One Giant Leap

Wow! Sounding good! I might finally have a reason to invest in a new PC in 2021! Speaking of: I hope this expansion doesn't push the minimum requirements too much higher. I'd rather have a game that looks good but runs great, than a game that looks great but runs like an asthmatic. Right now, Horizons hits the sweet spot.

One question I need answered: will Odyssey bring with it an updated launcher? :p

Oh, so much this!

A running theme that I notice (other than VR enthusiasts not understanding that the implementation goes vastly beyond tacking existing functionality onto a slower-moving view context) is the demand! For! Everything! To! Be! Unique! And! EXCITING!

Braban's vision is fundamentally about conveying the grandeur of space and the science that feeds into that. Reality itself is fairly homogenous: the 70th planet we land on as a species might still have novelty, but the 7000th planet we land on will be humdrum and just-another-workday. Constant danger around every corner? Existence consist of, broadly speaking, an attempt to reduce the difficulty of existing. It's why we seek shelter from the wind and rain and try to improve our buildings after they get destroyed by an earthquake so next time maybe it'll be safer. Dismissing the work that's gone into Odyssey because it doesn't ping your personal desires for any number of other features that would have been just as much work is wholly disrespectful.

As with the first trailer we got I'm still not very impressed by what I saw and heard after the first dev diary.
The new graphics look absolutely stunning and the sound will probably be great too but scanning plants? Realy?
I couldn't help it but the thought popped my mind that NMS has been doing that for a long time already.
Apart from the huge graphics difference this Odyssey thing is realy starting to look like an NMS rip-off, scanning plants, social player hubs, pew pew, all features NMS has already covered.
I know ED and NMS are two different games but imho that difference is getting smaller and smaller with the recent and upcoming updates.
Fleet Carriers look a lot like the big Carriers in NMS too only not as well implemented or as functional imho.

In short, great looks but gameplay is heavily disappointing so far.

Pffff and not being able to walk inside your ships from launch, one of the most requested features and they still have to think about that one.

Starting to see more "not at launch" comments, not just for VR.

My understanding was that what we now know to be the "Odyssey" expansion pack was delayed because it would be a complete package, rather than being released in parts as Horizons was.

So it's starting to look like we have not only waited all this time, but we still won't get the whole thing in one go when it does arrive.

Bugs & patches are understandable, and to a large extent inevitable, and updating the base game & Horizons content is a nice gesture too, but from what I've read over the past few years what now appears to be a relatively minor DLC should be feature complete on arrival, shouldn't it?

I thought the Ice planets looked way better than the planned 'Beyond' improvements, so that was cool. Actually, that was amazing. But there was nothing on show with regards to what we'll actually do when we land on a planet other than scan plants. I genuinely have no interest in that or spacelegs in general. All I really want to do is land on planets with atmospheres, like Earth or Mars. Horizons doesn't feel like it was finished and this doesn't look like it's going to complete it either.

That said, it was the first Diary and there's still a fair few months to go before it's deployed.

What we really 'need to know' is precisely what was actually planned for the expansion, rather than features that may appear. At least then we could be a little more relaxed as we'd know what to expect.

The 'not at launch' response may just be a put-off as it wasn't planned initially.

Oh well, a few more months and we should know everything they want us to know ;)

So the living creatures will be "plants" ?! That we are going to get samples to sell at the stations ... that is a unprecedented gameplay.

BTW - I don't know if this has been mentioned on this thread, or elsewhere. Pay special attention to the concept art in the background of some of the interviews. One shows a commander in what looks like a bar (2:41 in the video). So the ability to walk around stations will be there at some point and presumably ships too. Although once you've walked around your ship once, I'll doubt you'll do it again. Unless there's a task associated with it, obviously.

And just to add further. I'd hoped the dev diaries would be at least 30 minutes in length and a little more detailed rather than a 4 minute video.

I felt sorry for Stephen today, showing the same video 3 times on the stream tonight.

Did I see a slight FP look around the cockpit? Only slight movement but ...

This is most likely the regular free headlook you have with a gamepad attached.

I can make the same headmovement when playing on my Xbox.

All the ships have had stairs, it's just we've never used them yet!

Stairs and/or some kind of moving platform build into the front landing leg. Like on the Python and Krait.

... and how will that feeling of actually being the first to set foot on a new planet and surrounded by a thin helmet be conveyed through a flat screen a meter away?

There is only one way to actually do that justice and it is usually denoted by a two-letter abbreviation.

This can be perfectly conveyed on a 2D screen. No need for VR for that.

I remember the first time playing Halo 4 on my Xbox. Seeing the parts of Chief's helmet at the edges of the screen made me feel like I was wearing the helmet and Mjölnir suit.

Hello, nice video, but why the "sexist" helmets ?
At around 1:06 the men's helmet has two vertical bars while the female one is round with one horizontal bar. Chest armor begin different I could get behind for "anatomical" reasons, but head and eyes and vision is vastly the same across all 2+ genders of humans, right ? So why do they present it like different genders with different helmets ? And don't go "they couldn't put two guys with variations helmet could they" because of course they could, and also keep one guy and show 4 variations, or put one black man and one white woman (or asian, or latino, or whatever floats your boat) and so on and so forth. but they show us one man, one woman, and the helmets look different.
Plus you get an "ingame" shot afterwards of a female outside of her SRV with what appears to be an imperial gun (white, curved, sleek) that has this exact same weird helmet. so why are women treated differently ?
No judgement or anything, don't want to offend anyone either, just wondering aloud.

Nothing sexist here, just a viewcase of different helmet and suit types. The Buurpit made a good comment on it in their breakdown of the Dev Diary.

Speak for yourself. Entering the Forgotten Vale and Blackreach for the first time in Skyrim on Xbox 360 literally took my breath away.

There is a point where exposing yourself to big toys will ruin the simpler things for you.

If Odyssey gives me anything like those two locations, or when I first landed on planet years ago in Horizons, on a flat-screen, then I am gonna' be happy. As are most of the community because you know as well as I do that VR players are anything but a majority.

Word. As mentioned above I had a similar experience playing Halo 4.

I’ve played using an Xbox 360 wireless pad since the first Beta, continued once I moved into VR three years ago. Having played SubnauticaVR and the Alien: Isolation VR mod using the pad, I’d expect to continue controlling the game the same as our console brethren do.

One difference for us console players is that you can not change your input device once you've booted up the game. If you boot it up using a gamepad that'll be your main input device, same when you boot it up with a HOTAS. Still can use my chatpad on the controller to input system-names, but beyond that the HOTAS is my main input source.

1 mod says no VR chat another mod specifically asks a vr question.

Personally I think one of the big strengths of ED is it's controller agnosism. I use a hotas for flying my ship and a pad for my SRV.
I would expect to do the same in ED:O.

For non competetive gaming personally I prefer a pad to a KB/M in general so I thing I will be fine with the controls.

Alas not for the Xbox, see my statement above.

On the topic of ship interiors, you'd think this is something FDev would want to get ahead of. May as well just come out and say "no ship interiors" now rather than waiting and letting the community continue to hype itself up on it until Odyssey releases. The fewer question marks leading up to release the better (I realize we are still a ways away).

I think Fdev are keeping their cards to their chests. Imagine they announce walkable ship interiors, what else would there be to announce? I think, just like Obsidian Ant, that if walkable ship interiors are coming they'll announce it closer to release to build up hype.

Please, PLEASE! Let us walk around our ship's interior! I know for a fact that my Imperial Cutter has a pool inside I wanna swim in it!

See my statement above.

Now, I am looking forward to the new update. The planets look freaking amazing! I hope the upgrades to the planetary tech will trickle down to Horizons and the base game, to give the CMDR's that won't be upgrading to Odyssey something to look forward as well.
As for the walking around your ship. I fear it'll be the same as when you enter your SRV, going off the DD1 and livestream. A fade to black and presto, you're outside your ship.
I hope they'll surpise us closer to release though.

Now when will the next dev diary drop? I hope for one at least every month till release, 2 per month would be better.
