Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Update 6

Approaching an icy planet. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
Edit : managed to attach a screenshot - only 75% of original resolution.

So much to be excited about here but I got to

and my brain just locked up. This… sounds like a really bad change. I am more than happy to be responsible for my own actions and take my lumps if I’m seen stealing or hacking, even on accident. But a thief has to be quick, and this may cut us off at the knees when we’re in a restricted area and trying to grab things quickly.

I’ll give it a solid go, but I truly hope FDev isn’t married to this change

We've had a tonne of feedback on this and it's heard loud and clear :) Leave it with us!

Switched back to 4K native (**meaning I set the Display res to 4K) from the 2K I was using for Odyssey and I would be happy to leave it on 4K now for exploring (I can't test settlements), getting solid mid 30 - 40fps on foot on Quality/Quality+ terrain (spot shadow High) on my GTX 1080

Early days but I havent seen any weird terrain wobble movement or pop when traversing in an SRV also

Is the change to Smear Campaigns intentional? They are now illegal to download even from open access dataports (like in the bar area), and the NPCs open fire as soon as you try to get one.

Why was this changed? Those things are hard enough to get as it is.

And while I'm at it, Opinion Polls are even harder to get than Smear Campaigns. I'm pleased that I only need 10 now, but the real problem is the abysmal drop rate. It's not fun to check data port after data port and get nothing you want. Even getting 10 will take hours of repeated checking. It's grind to the max with these.

Not gonna lie, it really is peak Frontier for me.

"Ok guys, final check! Did we fix the mission POI? Improved visuals and audio? Gave better performance options? Added some new features? Yes to all? Anyone has anything to say before we release this thing we slaved all month on?"

dude in the back raises his hand

"I think we should add a small timer to the one thing every player does over and over for literally thousands of times. I think it'll be fun."

I am not worried, cant imagine this wont be hotfixed out ultra-pronto. But it is bizarre how FD manages to undermine all their work with sometimes baffling decisions. :ROFLMAO:

Can anyone find an anti-aliasing option that actually works? I've tried them all and the jaggies at the bar just stay the same.

I was running 1440p native, no supersampling (1.0) in old 'Normal' mode; In FSR Quality and Ultra are similar to that. Performance is blurry as you would expect and if I try to select Balanced it displays Performance.

I've left it on FSR & Ultra & SMAA for now, because it seems to be the closest to running at Native resolution with just a slight frame rate boost. I just wish we could have anti-aliasing that actually reduces the jaggies.
Supersampling can help a bit. But there's some sort of extra layer messing up; when I pan, edges look fine, but when the camera goes steady they keep creeping for a while before settling on a heavily aliased version. It's like it's applying an undocumented layer of temporal antialiasing that can't be switched off and destroys all attempts to get good antialiasing done.

They were illegal in patch 5 too
I always got mine while no one was looking....

Here what I see ASUS G752VS-BA191T i7-6700 and GTX1070
FHD SS1.0 (no AMD FSR)
39 FPS sharp image text on the board is readable

same place with AMD FSR 1.0 QUALITY 38 FPS TEXT BLURY ----- so nothing gained in this case

Getting nice results in native 4K too with AMD FSR at "Quality". I'm getting the same mid-30s - 40 fps I was getting before on planet surfaces on 2K @ High but now with 4K @ Ultra (spot shadows on high), even Ultra+ terrain only drops a few fps, which is fine for exploring.
A quick clarification. If you are using FSR, it's not rendering natively. That's pretty much the point to improve the performance. Unfortunately FSR is not magic.

To be honest without a "Digital Foundry" like comparison with native vs FSR modes which would differ for still images and in motion. Everyone is going to have a subjective opinion on it. I would expect native resolution to always look better than FSR in its current implementation.

Here what I see FHD SS1.0 no AMS FSR
39 FPS sharp image TEXT ON THE BOARD READABLE

From most of the FSR comparison videos online, very few recommend using FSR or DLSS if you are running a 1080p screen.

Have a look at something like;

So the FSR on Ultra quality looks ok on foot in space it is a soap smeared picture with WAY to much bloom
Have you double checked the display refresh rate setting? When I upgraded to Odyssey (both Alpha and full release) the dsiplay refresh rate setting was set to some weird figure like 12.5 or something (I set it to 60fps as that is what my monitor is) and it caused a really washed out picture like smeared in Vaseline.

With FSR set to Ultra Quality:

With Normal set to 1.0 (no supersampling):

Normal 1.png

When my HUD is blurry even on the highest setting I think calling that setting Ultra Quality is a bit misleading. I would have to agree with those asking for old CAS back. FSR might be an improvement for those who were running supersampling below 1.0 (i.e. upscaling), particularly on very high resolution UHD screens, but for those running at native resolutions I'm not convinced the slight FPS boost is worth the noticeable drop in quality.

I still think it's great that FDev implemented it so quickly and we don't know if there are more improvements to be made here, I'm just pointing out that you do need to make your own judgement on what works best for you.

Read your messages. :D Also, has performance improved when not using any up-, down- or sideways scaling? I just landed on a planet on High settings and my FPS still dropped to 30.
Can you post the complete screenie? Not sure where that is, dont see it in my ship (currently docked).

Very nice so far; a bit odd seing shield or hull for planets..? But whatever, it's a minor thing.

300fps in sppppaaaaaaaace is weird, but limiting it was easy enough. Next to run around some rocks. :D
