Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Update 8 Notes

Non-cynical me is just hoping for not having to ever enable FSR again, and get a consistent framerate (I'm not even sure if I'm too cheeky asking for 60fps?) everywhere with no stutters. I already know I'm asking for the moon on a stick here, even though I shouldn't have to feel that way.
Maybe not this update, but 60fps anywhere should be achievable, as I have seen instances of 60+ fps actually anywhere, just not for long.

Cynical me reckons someone who suffers through 20fps getting 30fps post-patch 8 gets a massive 50% improvement = significant.

We'll see which attitude is the more realistic one later on I guess.
Going from 20 to 30 is massive. I can get a solid 30fps on a laptop well beyond min specs, just a matter of really lowering quality. There are piles of games where my 2070s cannot get solid 60fps without fsr of dropping quality settings anyway.

A percentage as rough target is what I want to know. How I balance performance with visual quality is then up to me. :)

Hello o7

I am currently inundated with tags and DM's asking "Will this issue be fixed though?" because certain ones some people are looking for aren't listed.
Also got lots of questions around the notes listed out, requesting further clarity.

I've made a note of the questions to get back to individuals on in responses here in the thread, as soon as I'm done making sure we stay on track for deployment this afternoon, but feeding back on individual issues you can't see listed in the notes will have to come a bit slower in discussions over the next few days or so, as we usually do.

Back asap with what to expect as part of the update rollout and timings shortly.

I'm not ignoring you o7
Use the same whip you beat us unruly CMDRs with on the Devs!

While we're waiting ....

Does anyone else using a gamepad find that, if the cable is knocked out of the controller and reconnected, ED then doesn't seem to see it any more until the computer is restarted, even though the Windows control panel test still shows it as working fine?

Don't even know if it's ED's problem, Windows or my particular pad, but it's damned inconvenient.
I use a wireless Xbox One pad. A while back, the batteries ran out and I didn't have any charged spares. So I plugged it in via the USB cable.

Result: game no longer recognised the pad and assumes it's a new device. I couldn't even select my previously saved control binds files, just didn't show up in either EDH or EDO. I had to go back and re-map all binds from scratch (thankfully I only had to change/add about 10 or so otherwise use the default - still a PITA though and no other game does this).

it is a game though, a game.
By its nature you play the game and expect it to run smoothly enough. If its stuttering about and being poopy then you can't enjoy it.

Things is here in GT 1030 land FD need to give me 10 fps more on the surface at all low and keep a consistent framerate- if they can do that I'll be happy.

That's a great Patch Can't wait to hop back in after work.

Regarding the improvements to geysers: I'd LOVE to see something like cracks in the ground that spew water and steam. Something that isn't just that round bump in the ground spewing steam.

... ok... and mybe some rare POIs/wrecks in the black. really rare ... maybe every few hundred planets or so. 🤣

I really hope this is optional now, as I rather liked not having the UI.
The interdiction UI wasn't even gone, it was just moved to the extreme right (that's where I saw parts of it when I turned my view over my CMDR's shoulder).

I wouldn't know why you'd want to gimp yourself on purpose as the UI is kind of important (especially if the other party is human rather than NPC)... but if you really wanted to CTRL+ALT+G is probably your friend then.

Sorry, they're yours now but we will carry on with the fixes, sure.

Me too - but it really depends what direction I'm looking at. It's the inconsistency that is the most unpleasant part of it - if it stayed at a rock solid 40, or better 50 even, I could probably live with it (even though I don't think the visuals justify that kind of performance, it's no ray-traced CP2077 after all) as my monitor's g-sync would smooth it out to a large degree.

I know. I even looked to verify that it was just rotated out of view.

It's just a relative score update, hardly vital info, and it blocked a lot of the view. Dealing with just the escape vector was much better for me (thus the desire for it to be optional: no desire to force it on others).

They need to add a graphics benchmark test with a varied bunch of scripted scenery, then you'd have something to base your mininum/average/maximum FPS on.

I liked it when the interdiction UI disappeared as well. I've been interdicted a couple of dozen times this week (NPCs) and got away from all of them no problem, but not having the arcade game bars made it more tense.

Low FPS is annoying enough, but there's nothing worse than inconsistent FPS.
