Elite Dangerous on Xbox Series X [Video]

Running on Xbox Series X, auto HDR is a neat addition. The framerate is way better too. Still the planets look worse than before. Really low quality textures for some reason. I've seen other people talking about this as well. It's stupid the games looks worse (texture wise) on a new console. Really hope they fix this.

Is this planet surfaces? I've not landed on one since getting my Series X, but for me they look much crisper from space. The pop-in as you approach them as the quality increases is slightly more jarring though, due to it all being higher resolution, so the jump is more pronounced when it increases LOD.

Tried my best to capture the issues I'm having, notice the occasional hitching, especially if you watch the motion of the background stars:

If you check your in-game clock, you will notice the jumps in time ahead. That means that you have an active "instant resume" on, which is a feature of the new console. To switch that off, you need to manually QUIT ED after you ended your session. You can do that pressing Home, and then press the menu button while standing on Elite, you will get a 'Quit' option. Unfortunately I did not find any other method to avoid this any other way.

With this, for me in 4K Perfromance setting the game runs flawlessly.

Spot on, I've literally chased a station around a planet as the clock jumps forwards and its orbit jumps in big chunks.

Alas there is no way to control quick resume on a game by game basis.

Hello CMDRs,

As a games journalist / blogger I had the privilege to participate in Microsoft's Xbox Series X review process, thus I had the chance to play Elite Dangerous on the new console (which I do almost every day anyway). Now that the review embargo has lifted I'd like to post a short summary here. Yes, Elite Dangerous is fully playable on Series X|S, and everything works just like on Xbox One consoles. But the game gets a huge performance boost thanks to the new console.

Does it support multiple controllers at same time?
Can't really use a HOTAS for the First Person Shooter portion of the game.
Am I supposed to turn it off and power up a controller at that point?
How does that work?

Easy, tiger. The PC version of Odyssey isn't even feature complete - let alone the console versions.

So how do people switch between controllers on xbox?
For example:
I really like using my HOTAS for dog-fighting and mining, but if I pick up a passenger mission, or just out exploring, I would rather just use my xbox controller.
However, if I get attacked while traveling I want to be able to set controller down and start using the HOTAS again.
Is this not a thing that is doable?

Not something I do myself - but I don't believe switching input controllers on the fly is supported.

Does it not just work the same as any input device switch on XBox does? You just toggle which player profile is using which input device at the system level and then it sets whatever mappings are saved to the selected input profile for that device.

Basically, so long as the ED game input settings are set such that they map to however both input devices' system profiles are configured, I don't see it being an issue swapping between the two, no? The only issue I can see is if you need to tweak sensitivity/deadzones differently between them.

A second profile logged in to the xbox? I have to be honest, I've never even thought about that, but sounds like it could work. I'll give it a try when I get a break at work.
Thanks.

No, not a second logged-in player profile, I'm talking about peripheral profiles.
One logged in player profile toggling, using the Xbox quick menu, between multiple peripherals, each set to its own saved peripheral profile.
It's a system level xbox feature, been there ages.
You can save multiple peripheral mapping profiles. so say you want to toggle your pad between having the triggers and face buttons swapped, or invert the y axis on one stick or the other, etc. You save a profile with all the control settings remapped how you want. It's super handy for, for example, games which don't let you remap the control scheme AT ALL. I used it to create a profile which I load up any time I play Rebel Galaxy Outlaw where all the controls are mapped identically to ED's inputs.

So theoretically using that system you could potentially make sure that however the HOTAS is laid out, its profile's inputs map to the same ones as the pad's default profile. I can't say for sure as I haven't seen an XBox HOTAS I'd feel comfortable with the build quality of yet, but in theory it should work?

I have had my Xbox Series X for 2 weeks or so. I didn’t want to wait months for stock. So I got it new unopened. Just barely more then retail plus tax. Not bad since I didn’t want to wait for so long.

I installed ED internally. It runs way better then on my Xbox One X. I’ve got the LG 65” C9. Anthem MRX 720 receiver. Auto HDR from the Series X was a major surprise. Very nice. It does load faster. It’s smoother frame rate is wonderful. I hated the frame rate in cockpit when you push down on the right thumb stick to look around. That was bad on Xbox One X. Not bad on Series X. Not perfect but better. The frame rate is nice. I enjoy the game a lot more now. I’ve not been to any planets yet. Just a bit of pew pew fun and a couple trades all in the same system.

The main issue is that in the game options you have to choose which input to use.
I can plug my headset into my controller and I can hear the game and communicate in party chat while my input device in-game is set to my HOTAS.
So I can fly with the stick and talk on the controller, but the controller can't control the game because in the game options it is set to the HOTAS.
There's no option to use multiple input devices.

I like going to Dav's Hope and cutting laps (who knows why lol). I found that occasionally I would get motion sick while driving my SRV because of all the framerate drops and jitter.

Since I've had my XBSX, that issue is gone and driving around is pretty smooth now. No more motion sickness.

and the log out/in is much quicker so you get more mats per hour
