Elite Dangerous on Xbox Series X [Video]

The spooky thing is, this tracking status didn't update until half past 11, but 7:15 was PRECISELY when I woke up this morning. Hours before my alarm.

OK So spun up ED on my Series X, and:

  1. Auto-HDR - CONFIRMED!! It looks proper beautiful
  2. Quick Resume - If you switch away to another game and then switch back, unsurprisingly you are presented with a "lost connection to servers" message, and once you OK that the game cold-boots. HOWEVER, you cannot then reconnect to the servers, you have to cold-quit the game (dash, quit app) and reload to connect to servers again. This happened to me 4 times out of 4 tests
  3. It loads quick, but it also loads from external SSD quicker than it did on my One X, so perhaps no need to store it on the internal SSD
  4. It's smooth, so F'ing smooth - 4K 60FPS smooth, like butter
  5. Oh, and it's quiet!
P.S. The Day One firmware update for the console is 775mb

OK, this is somewhat concerning..... I had ED installed on an external SSD and working fine when this external SSD was plugged into Series X. Transferred ED to Series X internal SSD and the game won't load. Title screen and quit, every time. Rebooted console, same. Transferred back to external SSD and game loads fine. So, appears ED crashes when installed on Series X internal SSD. Useful!

I`d suggest a reinstall to the internal SSD from scratch just to rule out any issue relating to game transfers between storage devices. Cheers for confirming HDR, BTW.

My Series X has now been out for delivery longer than it was in transit for the 200 mile journey from the warehouse to the local distribution centre.

I failed to get a Xbox Series X pre-order during the first round and I thought I could maybe get one early this morning. They were already all sold out :(

So, while waiting for the Forza Horizon update to download, I put my Series X to the test vs Elite Dangerous.

Early impressions:
  • Auto HDR is on by default and it does make this game pop. I'll probably leave that on for now.
  • 4k/Quality mode at 60fps. Wonderful. No noticeable performance issues here within a high intensity CZ, others may disagree but I saw nothing to make me consider playing 4K/Performance mode.
  • I've been playing the game from an external SSD for a while now on my One X. The same game loads much faster from the same external SSD on Series X, I got around 2 rotations of the 4-squares in the bottom left corner of the screen before the game is loaded.
  • As expected with a Zen 2 CPU, switching to Galaxy/System maps is much faster now. Faster then it was running the game off the external SSD via my One X.
  • On my One X, for some reason, going to the main menu would fire up the fans. ED is the only game that did that, not even 1st party content like Gears 5 or Forza did that. If its still doing that on Series X then I can't tell. Its a dark tower of power which silently allowed me to play away.

Sorted - Quit game, rebooted console, transferred game, rebooted console, ED loads from internal SSD.

I'm almost tempted to leave it on the external SSD and leave the internal for games which use the Xbox Velocity Architecture (Elite isn't one of them, not yet anyway). Even on my external SSD there's one heck of a loading boost.

Totally with you there dude, it's certainly a candidate to stay on the external SSD. Although, I did order the Seagate Card although it's not shipped yet. I also have the white Seagate 8TB spinning rust disk which is also a hub. Gonna test that HDD on the end of a 3m USB 3 extension to the X, and the external SSD plugged into the "hub" of the HDD. See if it all works :)

Some said there was a bug where performance and quality modes were somehow mixed up, be good to know what the best one to use is when on the X for quality/FPS.

Yeah, the heat effect on the engines which was in quality mode is gone, has been for months now. But the OP stated that performance mode performs better than quality mode. Maybe FDEV quietly removed the heat effect from 4k/Quality and didn't tell anyone?

As for the external SSD, I'm using a 2TB Samsung 870 QVO, it was a bit faster on the One X but is very fast on Series X, that Zen 2 CPU is a lot faster at decompressing data for legacy games.

Yep the hardware decompression block is a real nice feature. Wonder if installs get recompressed. My external SSD is a crucial MX500 1TB

My guess would be is that the OP has made an assumption that the removal of the heat effect means that all other quality mode enhancements are no longer available. I don't think there's any evidence for that. Most obvious place to prove it, either way, is terrain level of detail on planet surfaces.

That hardware block is nice, but legacy games won't use it unless they're updated for Xbox Velocity Architecture. I read somewhere that one patched 1st party game (Gears 5?) doesn't use it. All the performance benefits on that and legacy games like ED are purely from the native speed of the internal drive (and the much faster CPU on external drives).

Either way, she's a beast. :D ...will hook up my Series S later and see how ED runs on that little puppy.

Yes, would be good to know how it runs on the S. I've just joined the insider program again so now beta firmware downloading .... will I regret it lol.

Installed ED onto internal side and it really does cut down start up loading times, seems to run quality mode alot better than the xb1x.

Had to test with i-eagle speed run thro asteroid belt. Report no lag up to 912m/s.
If we get a graphics buff with oddessy it will be jaw dropping.

Oh well, what can i say... hoping to get one by Xmas
No chance of a pre-order here

Until then keep posting stuff here :)
