It's a combination of the Fleet Carriers Update launch, last week's Odyssey news, and the sale.I'm sure the fact that the game is on sale for $8.99 (70% off) is completely unrelated.

Elite has been discounted on Steam six times this year

This is the six-month Steam player stats - orange dots from left-to-right:

The last 6 months would probably cover everything except bonfire night last year...Your graph is incomplete - doesn't show lockdowns or public holidays. Those are also factors.
Not that I'm saying the game is dead, but the numbers should be presented in context.

Necroing a 2-month old thread is bad? Whoops:Wow, what a necro. The last thread someone necroed wasn't even bad and got locked very quickly so if this one doesn't that's some bad bias. Common mods keep to your pretty high standards.

Interesting to note that Saturday tends to have more people playing than Friday, so may get 17k tomorrow. Who knows maybe the all-time record could come under threat
What about blights, famines, pirate attacks, wars and expansions?Your graph is incomplete - doesn't show lockdowns or public holidays. Those are also factors.

Interesting... Covid spike perhaps?New record set on 12th June 2020 - this is only the second time ever that 16k has been exceeded
(and doesn't even count the many non-Steam PC, Xbox, and PS4 CMDRs)

Original post:
Steam concurrent CMDRs online reaches FOUR-year high over Easter weekend - highest since 1st Dec 2015

Horizons launched on 15th December 2015.
The recent playerbase resurgence began the day of Fleet Carriers Content Reveal Announcement, and benefited from the lockdowns that started early March.
More data taken from my comment later in this thread
Anyway, here are two 6-month charts from SteamDB, showing Daily Peak Concurrent (top) and Price (bottom) - I've also marked the weekend when quarantining & lockdowns began in Europe:

Meanwhile, here are the Maximum/Average/Minimum Daily Peak Steam Concurrents for each March/April/May, each year, since Elite Dangerous' launch on Steam - the Aprils are highlighted for convenience:

Lastly, here are the 1-month daily peak concurrent Steam charts for Elite Dangerous plus the top-five most-played games on Steam (clockwise from top-right), to visualise the COVID lockdown effect:

This is going to be a really good weekend for elite. Its onwards and upwards. Frontier have the world at their shoulders with a bottomless pit of ARX and DLC money awaiting if they get this right. Its about damn time they realised how valued Elite is, compared to Zoo simulators!
Sunday at 9pm is nearly always peak Elite. I think that 18k record might be close to going by Sunday evening, maybe even tonight.
Any daily peak over 10k concurrent players are traditionally good numbers, and at the lowest point of the day (8am this morning) there were 9,300 people online.
We al know steam numbers don't mean anything.
