News Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys

And where is this little factoid written? 30% seems excessive.

Many indie devs have quoted Valve take a 30% cut regards sales of their product on Steam. Yep it's high! It's been this figure for several years. Bigger companies clearly get to negotiate it down with Valve. We'll likely never know...

ok...so the store loaded .... and where is the key ... -.-'? ... always problems with this kind of stuff... hope it resolves soon... ^^

It is stated in the very part that you quoted, that if you purchase through FDev store 100 percent pf the proceeds go to FDev. The obvious implication here, is the opposite. That being if the game is purchased through Steam (or anything after you'd linked your profiles), some other part (less than 100%) of the whole, proceeds go to FDev, presumably the rest goes to Valve or Captain America.

You're not purchasing through Steam if you purchase through the EliteDangerous store.

some crazy speculations going off in this thread like Chinese whispers, working yourselves up gettin all hot n bothered n steamy

Hmmm finally managed to get to the end of the process after clicking on the partner keys and linking to Steam but nothing is showing either in Steam or on the dashboard. Should we expect an update from FD on this or hassle them for an update?

He suggest that as long as you buy through ED store, 100% will go to FDev, regardless if you linked your account or not. I believe that is not the case. Once the account is linked, a portion (presumably 30%), will go to Volvo, even if you buy from the store, because it essentially becomes content for a game that you have on Steam.

I know you meant Valve but I couldn't help but laugh thinking some random car company was getting money for a game XD

1 good thing though, re downloading the game through steam took 7mins, takes all night through FD launcher

for me, nearly everything went smooth in the evening, but I got the following instead of a key, after clicking "claim":

Yeah, that's a fair interpretation. We don't think of it as a tax though, just part of working with third party retailers.

If you link your account, Valve takes the cut even if you buy from ED store: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=148965&p=2293661&viewfull=1#post2293661

Lori, I'm not sure if that is the smoking gun we're looking for. Ed statement is above. He doesn't specify that buying from the website applies a tax, and goes even further to declare that it is not a tax. For all we know, he's talking about buying items through Steam that are available on the ED Store.

Frankly, I'm just a tich annoyed we haven't gotten an official clarification on this.

The annoying this is; all this speculation and confusion can be fixed with a quick and clearly worded post from a dev.

It'll be commercially sensitive. This was asked when the keys were announced and we didn't get an answer the and we won't get one now. Its pretty simple, if you don't want your ED cash going to Valve don't accept the key.

but by doing so any future FD store purchases become subject to the "valve tax"

You're not purchasing through Steam if you purchase through the EliteDangerous store.

Once you get your Steam key then your account is linked to Steam. All downloadable content purchased after that, whether bought through Steam or on the ED store has to have a set amount given to Valve as per a contract Frontier has signed with them.

Is that now clear?

So,

Option 1: Don't get a Steam key and buy everything directly from Frontier = Frontier gets all the money
Option 2: Get a Steam key and buy anything anywhere = Frontier gets (Price - Valve transaction percentage fee) for ANYTHING directly related to the game forever more.
