Elite Dangerous | System Colonisation Beta Details & Feedback

Tell that to AXI or Fleetcom who have crazy, ambitious colonization projects and small armies of commanders (& FCs) to get it done.
I don't really understand the purpose of their plans. But I'm glad for them that they're interested in this game.

I will build only one station to give it a name and anchor it forever in the galaxy.

Trailblazer Promise is out of Steel. Again. It's also out of Liquid Oxygen this time. Yes, I'm going to keep reporting it so the people needing the feedback know it's still happening regularly.

You'd need a minimum of five markets:
- agricultural
- industrial
- orbital refinery (insulating membrane)
- surface refinery (CMM composite)
- surface high-tech (muon imager)

In theory [1] you could do this with four landable planets or moons (because both refineries can be on/around a single planet) in a single mid-sized system. You've then got technical self-sufficiency in all needed commodities - any further build up just means you're generating 2000t/day of Steel rather than 1000t so you can build further things quicker. The agricultural, industrial and high-tech commodities are all needed in such small quantities that a single outpost is likely to provide enough.

This would provide everything you needed for orbital construction; there is no alternative but to return to the bubble occasionally to grab a new pile of Emergency Power Cells for certain surface constructions as these are not a standard economic commodity (they're not quite a Rare, but they're close).

[1] At the moment, the issue where all surface ports, regardless of size, randomly pick just three things to export ... you'd end up needing a lot more stations in practice. But that seems fairly clearly a bug and will hopefully be fixed at some point.
Hi @Ian Doncaster
Sorry to ask but can you please elaborate on which construction-type is classed as a 'refinery'. From all the builds I can see in the architect screen the only refinery per-se is as a Hub (so only available as a surface build and non-landable after construction) - is this what you are referring to?. I can also see nothing that can be build in orbit around a planet that is labelled as a refinery-type so unsure what to build.
I already have Ag, hi-tech and industrial builds producing machinery and hi-tech but would love to be able to make (i.e. refine) metals. I have a HMC landable planet with pristine reserves - what do you recommend I construct so I have a market for metals to help with further system(s) expansion supplies?
Ta in advance (I'm always impressed by your game mechanics knowledge).
Cmdr B.

That's correct.

So what you need to do in this situation is use the Hub's "economy influence" property which converts other major stations on or around the same body into refineries.
- build a Colony economy station (Commercial or Civilian outpost are cheapest, a Coriolis ... or Orbis/Ocellus ... is more expensive but gets you more output at the end)
- build a Refinery hub on the planet below (you'll probably need at least two of them, maybe three, to fully convert the station, so you'll want a decent-sized landable planet or a large moon for this)

(Probably don't build anything other than Refinery hubs and Colony-economy ports around this planet/moon or you'll dilute the resulting Refinery output)

Refineries - presumably because they're so useful for self-sufficiency - are by far the hardest thing for new colonies to build - but it can be done.

Hey Ummm, real question why is Institute an "inappropriate" word
Kind of reminds me of the scene in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs:

Curly Joe's brother: "You are Buster Scruggs? The West Texas Twit?"
Buster Scruggs: "I assume you meant West Texas , on account of that particular bird's mellifluous warble!"

(Edit: Sigh, can't even quote movies properly.)

You mean the moon? Are you saying that you can build an oil refinery on any planet or moon that has never seen oil?

You can also place agricultural settlements on icy moons and actually grow stuff.
you even can place mining/industrial installation somewhere in the system in an orbital slot that even doesn´t belong to a GG Ring or Astro-Flied - yet it supplies the Ind-Hub with goods (pre-requ for Ind-Hub - that or a mining facility on surface - somewhere)
