News Elite Dangerous: The Commanders (2.3) beta

Bring your friends or invite new crew mates to pack that extra punch you might need in key situations

So the terrifying prospect of ships that are 2/3/4 times as powerful/capable as the same single player ship is still around?

Yah that totally sounds balanced and not like a nightmare.

Sorry - quite hyped for other features but the multicrew meaning your ship has massively more punch seems one of the most spectacularly misguided and ill conceived things I've ever heard - I will be praying the beta will prove me wrong but I've not heard any explanation about it yet.

lol

we'll see. on the one hand i am very happy to see FDEV is moving our game forward. on the other hand, if multicrew is artemis tacked onto elite, that is neat but very very niche and i will mostly not give a biowaste.

But you DO have friends on the map. That must be amazing :D

LOL, I know right!

I scan through the whole list and I see a lot of people from the old days on there. Only two left online regularly from the early days of just add whomever you came across as a friend.

I got a handful more that are newer (like a year) but that came from an old thread with a bunch of lonely explorers wanting to put those green icons out there to see what parts of the galaxy were being explored. There is one CMDR friend who I think is about to drift into intergalactic space...I don't know how they stick with it :p

Space legs in cockpits would be the best, but I guess they're saving it for season 3.

Maybe they've realized that walking around just in the cockpit doesn't bring gameplay and a marketable value, and decided to add it as a bonus (and a teaser) feature in 2.3

I don't think so thought.

I guess it will be telepresence. :| Otherwise you have to travel a long distance to be in the same station and then hop into the other ship. That is more realistic though.

Telepresence wouldn't work, though. I mean, you can't get past 30KM of your fighter, how could you do it from another star system?

That is my one concern with this... we already had to jump through hoops justifying and rationalizing telepresence in fighters and those fighters being rebuilt on board your ship... I'm worried about how the mechanics will go down and any unforeseen ramifications of it.

Lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I fear you're gonna be right about this though.

Hopefully not. Seriously.

I hate to be that guy, and forgive me if this has been addressed, but does this mean we can expect no bugfix updates before 2.3?

Specifically, I'm talking about the instafail missions introduced in 2.2.03 but I know there are others like the Ruins that are in need of attention, and having to wait another two months for missions to be fixed after the beta is a bit much.

Thanks for the announcement, Zac and thanks to all the Frontier crew for making this game my only time sink.

Regarding the hype building in this thread, I had hoped that people have learned to temper their expectations. Part of the reason that Frontier have killed off sneak peaks is that people were extrapolating stuff aren't out things that were not there. If we get NPC multicrew, that's great but at this stage all we know about 2.3 is that it has human multicrew and the avatar creator.

It is the avatar creator I am actually looking forward to most for season 2, my INARA card needs a decent mugshot on it.

If the npc crew is not included, it will be a waste of development time as usual. We shall see soon.

*Patiently waits for Console 2.3 date* Here's us pesants hoping our lords get the beta right this time and aggressively test the heck out of it. Do your jobs PC, we're all counting on you!

Hey Zac
At Fantasticon During your Frontier Q & A
Ed and Michael confirmed ship naming was being worked on, did that make it to the beta for 2.3?

I really do hope that multicrew works within the elite universe so that its not immersion breaking and you actually meet the crew at a station first before boarding the ship. Secondly I hope that multicrew offers also new gameplay options not just for fighting but exploring, etc.
Those are my biggest concerns... hope we will know more soon.

Hey, at least with multi-crew you'll be able to enjoy the experience of [ insta-failing a mission / seeing your SRV stuck at 45% health / wondering why the wave scanner has stopped working / grinding away at ludicrously repetitive so-called "puzzles" / straining your eyes to see an acre of ruins in 40 billion cubic hectares of barren planet surface ] (pick your favourite) with a number of your friends' uncannily grotesque avatars gurning along in the background!

Come on EZ, let's at least try to stay positive!

;)

No npc crews so that’s that, but there might be other stuff in 2.3 that will be good. The Commander Creator will be interesting to play around with for at least a few minutes. We might get ship naming too, we know they are working on it. And hopefully some small QoL stuff will be useful to some players. Maybe they’ll even surprise us with some non multiplayer content too.

We’ll know what to look forward to in a month, if not sooner.
