Elite Dangerous Update 7 Progress

Disrespect and abuse has absolutely no place in society and that has to be called out, rooted out and removed.

There must be a wholesome way to criticise and give feedback that isn't deemed as trolling or abuse though. Venting your feelings in a constructive and valid manner is not in the same character as what that article describes. Toxic negativity is abhorrant and shouldn't exist.

pats you on the back , that make you feel good getting that all out?

-10 points for using "wholesome" in a non-sarcastic manner.

I heartfully recommend reading this thread with GIF animations turned off in your browser, makes it so much better.

It's because you're being trolled, plain and simple.
Nah I wasn't trolling, pointing out that ridiculous claims on the internet are often that, and also, that from the outside looking in, few things are as simple as they appear to be(If the rumors of ED spaghetti code are true, and being a mess then this is doubly true. Again I have no clue, as I know little to nothing about programing, other than it is rarely as simple as it appears.)

And reminding people to be nice, even though I fail that one occasionally, especially when my back acts like a peckerwood and gives me what for. It is hard to be nice, but a worthwhile goal.

In most software, the code is very simple. KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) is a mantra that I've followed my whole life. Simple code is easy to fix, and usually has fewer bugs to begin with if you keep everything atomic.

On the face of it, this bug (something unintended & unrelated happening when the user clicks a button) seems simple enough, even without knowing the codebase.

Sally has pointed out that it's not that simple, and I've accepted that and retracted it, so I'm not sure why I'm still being attacked from all sides and people questioning my credentials. It's like I've attacked them personally or something by questioning the timeframe. It's a very weird phenomenon. Someone should do a psych study.

Anyway, crack on... 🤷‍♀️

Unfortunately, best practice and methodologies tend to go out of the window in real life, especially the bigger the project gets. Deadlines, crunch, pressure, or just stupid mistakes all contribute to devs taking shortcuts or doing things in a bad way.

In my experience, with long running projects, there simply reaches a point where bug fixing and small refactors just don't cut it anymore and it becomes too expensive to keep developing on top of it. The usual decision then is either a refactor of almost everything or a completely new version built from the ground up.

Unfortunately, i don't think FD can afford to do either of those things.

You like to call other peoples thoughts out in a very negative way. I hope it helps you somehow. Lack of knowledge is changed through providing the knowledge and imparting understanding. Help a person or just call their ideas and thoughts stupid. It's all up to you.
Just saying how it is. The information is there if you bother to find out. I'm not the one being negative, it's you that's been negative. All I've said is that your negativity is ludicrous because your talking about stuff you have no idea about, being rude about it, and it sounds like you are accusing them of something.

That's why I say, think about what you write.

You do you and believe what you want..hope it makes you happy :)

Huh? Why would you delay the patch for everyone when such a small % of players participate in CGs? Also, you're not going to fix this problem for the current CG so, what's the point of the delay? Delay whatever CG that's going to follow the current CG and release update 7 this week. Then, do a point release for the CG fix. ...7.01. IIRC correctly you released 6.01 a day or two after 6 proper. This really doesn't make any sense at all.

Ironically, even your pseudo code is incorrect. Assignment. Right there. I see it.

Ha, good spot, that'll teach me to write code in a hurry. :ROFLMAO:

In C#, you don't even need the '= true' (or '== true'), the simple 'if' would do that automatically. But I was trying to be clear with pseudocode. 🤷‍♀️

Oh yes...

There also comes a point where if you want to continue using / selling the software & adding to it, you can't afford not to.

That's actually what got me excited for the Beyond updates. Not the new features or gameplay, but a major internal refactoring of the code. That's what I took was happening - sadly, that didn't appear to be the case. :(

What I find odd is the thinking behind your "analogy" or whatever it ought to be. To think the solution would be easy like that and occupy a whole team for more than a week comes close to an insult in my opinion.

As I said, it raised an eyebrow or two. On the face of it, the bug sounds simple in basic software development terms.

On the face of it...

... but then there are faces that we don't see, nor can know, so it's moot really.

That's a fair point. But in this case, no updates for a couple of years following Odyssey while they do this i think would be the nail in the coffin (DOOM!).

Its a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't, and i guess FD have to soldier on regardless.

When I first read the OP, it had one like and no comments. I thought, "Hmmm, okay," and I went about my day. I check back a few hours later and all hell has broken loose. I must admit, I didn't see that coming.. Is it really a that big a deal that an update has been delayed by one week?
