How much of a benefit will OR be versus say 3 monitors showing a panoramic view from the cockpit? Surely you'd be getting a "better" simultaneous view with the monitors since peripheral vision will show you things on the side monitors without turning your head that you wouldn't see in the OR unless you actually turned?

I am, of course, assuming that ED will support multi-monitor setups in this fashion, it'll be a crime if it doesn't!

As for looking "behind" you, won't you just see the rear wall of your cockpit? Looking at many of the ship designs, the cockpit windows are only really forward and side facing and "behind" the pilot is the rest of the ship. Yes?

Yes, and no. With a high enough resolution OR (not the current one obviously) you could simulate having three monitors sitting in front of you, with all that implies... i.e that your FOV with OR could still be wider than your 3 screens. The limit just now is the resolution.

One of the most thought provoking applications on the OR just now is the cinema one. Basically you're sitting in your own private cinema with a massive (virtual) screen to yourself. So if you can fit a cinema screen into the Rift, obviously 3 monitors are no issue (resolution aside).

Having just had a go on the rift at the Manchester Play expo yesterday, I must admit I was a little amazed. They used a WW2 Dogfighter (Dunno which one) and it was probably the most immersive thing outside the new star wars tours ride in Florida.

It didn't take long to work out the controls by touch with the joypad, so I would imagine it you're using a controller you're used to it's not going to be a problem.

The only issue I do see is you're going to look a bit of an idiot when you are playing a game. Wait for people to start the you tube pranks on people using the rift.

If you want to try your hand at space combat in the Rift check out my humble indie game Space War http://www.arowx.com/spacewar.htm or pizza delivery with a Jetpack http://www.arowx.com/lgm.htm

The Oculus Rift forums are a good place to see and try what other indies are making for the Oculus Rift.

Ah ha! With a radar like that, I had a feeling that game was done by an Elite fan ;)

EDIT: On the subject but just a suggestion, I find the default controller mapping a little awkward.

Thank You, hey you can't beat good design, if anyone has feedback please PM me here or on the Ocuclus Rift Forum.

Darn it! I knew there was a reason I learned to touch type all those years ago! :D

You will still need to move your eyes to get the image in focus - Same difference except you move your head.

Yes, moving your eyes is faster but no where near as fun! :D

Some people are getting awfy excited about this, and that's OK.

Me, I'll wait until the consumer version is released and see how good it is and how much it costs. I'm not stupid enough to believe that it will be $300 (or £188), it's much more likely to be £300+. Also, the weight of the thing will be a deciding factor, along with eyestrain, as when I start playing E: D it will be for long periods at a time (or not at all).

So, reserving judgement at the moment and not getting (too) excited until the situation is clearer.

I bet i would get motion sickness if i wore one of those things and my eyes would probably strain way more than with my monitor, so headaches galore. :(

I would like to try one for 2-3 hours and see how I feel. I do wonder about the motion sickness and the weight of the unit. It will also be interesting to see the launch price. Launch prices for new kit tend to be high and then work their way down so I will hold off and see what others are saying once the full version is released. I also can't get my head around the fact that you look like a complete twonk with one on! ;) (no offence)

If you're susceptible to motion sickness then you likely will be with the Rift too, depending on the application of course. In time, developers will be using various design techniques to lessen the effect - there's a lot of work going into that already.

Not sure about eye strain... I've probably not worn the Rift for longer than an hour at a time. But your eyes work in it as they do in real life - i.e. you are refocusing at different distances, rather than having a fixed focal length as with a monitor.... so perhaps it's actually better than a monitor!

Indeed.

I haven't used one for an extended period of time, so I can't comment on the eye-strain (or the retail price for that matter!), but I can tell you that the dev kit at least is very light.

Indeed, having played with one myself I can attest to the lightness and comfort of the unit, but I can also attest to the rapid onset of vertigo and motion sickness. Having your brain telling you that you're moving but your inner ear and body telling you the contrary has knocked every single person that I've seen use it on their ass. For games that are designed to be used with oculus it's far less 'affecting' than for games that aren't - i.e. Halflife and Skyrim will mess with you far more than DCS-A10, Rise of Flight or Cliff of Dover. I suspect that Elite D will fall into the latter category of being somewhat easier to deal with than FPS... except for the FPS bits LOL

And the effects on the metabolism and the mental, health on the long-term ? And the neuro-oculars disorders, already evoked by experts for the 3D glasses. Before, break my health, the brain and the eyes, I want to see the commercial version, the size (at least as glasses), the weight, the price, and the reading of reports of medical experts on the long-term for the health.

:(
