Fiction Elite Encounters: The Elite Dangerous RPG

A call to arms

Calling the Elite Community.

I need your help. The Elite RPG needs your help. We are faced with a challenge the likes of which we have not seen since we were exposed to the sight of Psykokow in his Elite onesie.

Worry not, the writing is progressing well, although the race to the end of the month is more fraught than planned, and the end of the month target is achievable as long as the tinkering gnomes of doubt stop making me change things that don't need changing.

No, my need is not with the writing. My need is with the imagery. With the writing taking up so much time and the demons of RealLife taking up the rest, I have not had much chance to play the alpha and will likely not see much of the beta. The other problem is that my poor little laptop just hasn't got the grapefruits to handle Elite: Dangerous in all its 3D-tastic glory. Thus I cannot get screenshots of any resolution good enough to use as source images for the book.

Which is where I need to ask YOU, the fantastic, brilliant and talented Elite community, for a helping hand.

I need screenshots. I need screenshots of ships, stations (inside and outside) planets and whatever else you can find that would be interesting. The main requirement is SHIPS though.

If you can provide me with some decent screenshots, and I use them in the book then I will be eternally grateful. I'll also credit your screenshot-taking fantasticness in the book's acknowledgements pages.

Seriously, though, I would really appreciate the assistance. Discovering that my computer is struggling to run Elite Dangerous even on the lowest settings has been a bit of a blow, and I haven't got time to draw, model or render the ships by hand on my own and I'm not even half of the Photoshop wizard that Mobius is.

So if you are an Alpha player or a Premium Beta pledger then I look to you for help, and thank you in advance for anything you can do. No matter how small.

PM me if you can help and let me know. Thanks.

Had a blast playing the RPG until 4am last night! The players were a bit rowdy but Selezen's patient and otherwise GMing skills made for a good time had by all. And swords really are superior to guns!

Are screenshots still needed, btw?

Wait a minute, can't FD provide you this? :) Contact Mobius and Neon Raven.

FD have provided content, but there are certain types of artwork that would be useful - screenshots of the ships, stations and interiors are questionable in their usefulness. I'm against asking people to go and try and grab certain types of shot (which is work) but if people are playing and grabbing screenshots anyway, then a copy of them would be awesome - especially with the new HD ones...

I still need to work out how to get images of people.

Screenshots are still needed, Rob, yes. Thanks for taking part in the game across the wee hours of Sunday. That was AWESOME. Bags of fun all round, I think.

I remember hearing Dan as he died bravely then headed off to his hotel.. as I frantically and in vain tried to write a script for the Sunday..

Anyway Was as ALWAYS a pleasure meeting you sir.. I WILL TAKE PART in a game some day...

Maybe a Elite Encounters meet is required, suitable attire required.. maybe get a few GM's in and a few tables to run games over an evening?

Anyway I will do my bit to get you some graphics sir... then you can like me again!!! And we can skip down the beach in our mankini's and off into the sunset..

Great to sell copies, equipment for gaming... maybe have a GM workshop as well.....

Im just thinking Elite Encounters banners outside the door would lead to interesting attendee's..

I'm sure it would be a great event for an early afternoon to early morning..

But Location would be key, and dressing up..

I would suggest (love how we're doing this without even a nod from Dave)

Maybe a GM workshop then run the evenings and let wannabe GM's run games with the Talented King GM watching over the proceedings... and helping out?

I'm up for an Elite Encounters meet... the two games over the weekend were great fun! We also discussed running some games over Skype or Roll20 :)

Cassius... did we get a chat? lol... where you at that LATE NIGHT Sat night table!!

Just seen this! Oops, shows how much i pay attention :p

Yup was at the table on Saturday night while you were diligently toiling into the wee hours on your script :)

We talked briefly mate, and you very kindly let me play with your Occulus Rift and Hotas [insert inappropriate bum joke here (and also giggles at "insert" :p )] but understandably you had a lot on!

You're coming to Fantasticon right? :)

Ah, was that your character in the van? :)

Lol no afraid not, i didn't make it that far! I was the one that got shot a couple of times and ended up being carried by Chris and another chap (was that you?). But when Chris got shot in the head he managed to fire off a couple of round and killed me! (Thanks Chris! ;) )

I'm afraid to say it was about 2.30am by that point and had a half hour walk back to my hotel so decided i had to call it night. Never got to see the van escapades! :)

Ah, when you were being bravely rescued, I was sensibly running away. Then there was my attempt to drive a van through a hangar door, and Andew Sayers hilarious attack against gunmen with a sword. Selezen vowed to remove swords from the game after that, as they are too powerful!

Definitely too powerful. I'll be removing knives as well, and small stones are already out after discovering that they have the potential to destroy space stations.

It's great to see so much positivity about the game experience. I've been a little distracted by some real life (tm) goings on, but after my anniversary weekend away I'll be putting some serious thought into some of the stuff I've read here.

A BIG thanks to the Lave Radio guys, by the way, who featured the RPG in the latest episode and were really positive about it. Chris and John gave the game rave reviews (although with John's deadpan voice it was a bit hard to tell that he was enthused ;-) ) despite both of their characters being shot in the face and dying. Allen was likewise his awesome self and correctly described me as rather blown away by the feedback.

Anyway, I'm off on holiday for a few days now, bobbling about in the Cardiff sunshine. When I get back I'll be getting back to work, and releasing the Beta rules including modifications prompted by the playtest at Lavecon.

Thanks again, guys. :)

Sorry about the late posting here. I should really visit these forums more often...

You probably know this already, but I did an online session with the Lave Radio guys just over a week ago, and it's all live on the podcast now.

It worked well, so I'll definitely be open to running sessions online with people if they want to, and it will definitely work well for people to run their own sessions once they get hold of the book.

We used Roll20.net for the RPG elements (dice rolling, drawing board etc) and used a skype session for the audio part. We only used Skype because that's how LR do their recordings - Roll20 can handle audio and video feed if your bandwidth can take it. Apparently Google Hangouts isn't great (according to Fozza). The rules are designed to enable online play (without dice) so any social platform should be do-able as long as the audio is reliable.

Play by chat or play by forum would also be possible depending on your play style.

Hurrah! The Beta release of the rules is now out in the wild and (hopefully) pledgers are reading up and getting ready to organise a game.

Now I get to:
1) finish off the text
2) add the graphics
3) send dice out.

Woohoo!
