Elite Observatory - Search your journal for potentially interesting objects, or notify you of new ones on the fly while exploring!

Welcome back! Glad to hear you're enjoying the app. @Vithigar has certainly been working hard on it.

To answer your questions:

1. Yes. The discord: https://discord.gg/9fRv4t7q there's a #custom-criteria forum where folks post up their contributions. There's also a #custom-criteria-discussion channel for several of these questions. A few other folks (like Cmdr Julian Ford) have also created "custom criteria for everyone" type of files. I'm not positive where they're hosted, but you may be able to track that down somewhere.
2. Globals are executed once per reload of the custom criteria file. The file is re-loaded at the beginning of a read-all or after external edits/modifications during real-time monitoring.
3. There's an Undiscovered System custom criteria in discord. I just updated it to have a pre-1.0 and post-1.0 version. Such a custom criteria would NOT go in the global section.
4. For icy rings, there's also a "Minable Rings" custom criteria in the discord -- which I've also just updated in similar fashion. Alternatively, you may also be interested in the Prospector plugin (which reminds me, I need to update for 1.0). See also the #plugins channel or the dedicated Prospector plugin post in the discord.

Let me know if you're not a discord user and I'll post up the two custom criteria I referred to here. Otherwise, hope to see you in the discord!

Thank you, I joined the discord server. Your link didn't work for some reason but the one on the docs did. My name there is SynapticSchism since that's the name of my music project and I only used discord so far for music stuff.

Welcome back! Looks like your questions are well covered already, but still wanted to reply and say thanks for looking us up again!

You can find a WINE-friendly build for use in linux on the experimental build page.

Some more functionality for pop-up notifications in this one, with options for independent scaling of the text, and disabling the transparency effect. This latter option can improve the readability of the text in some situations, and may also serve as a workaround for some visual issues that had been reported with the popup notification.

In addition there is now a /nomin command line argument which will prevent Observatory from starting minimized. This too is a workaround for some strange behaviour that was discovered when launching Observatory via min-ed-launcher. For those of you using that you can update the Observatory entry in your ed-min-launcher settings.json file and add "arguments": "/nomin" to the Observatory entry in the processes array. E.g.:
JSON:
"processes":
  [
    {
      "fileName": "C:\\Program Files\\Elite Observatory\\ObservatoryCore.exe",
      "arguments": "/nomin"
    }
  ]

  • Fixed handling of custom criteria with multi-line details and descriptions
  • Add /nomin launch option
  • Send notification from explorer individually when multiple criteria trigger on a single body
  • Potential minor performance improvement to grouped item handling
  • New setting for popup notification font scale
  • New setting for popup notification transparency

I just updated to the most resent version of the observatory Core and now I get an odd error if I load it in the background. The error is

SplitterDistance must be between Panel1MinSize and Width - Panel2MinSize.

Any idea how to fix this?

By loading in the background I assume you mean starting minimized? If so it's a known issue with how some of the UI is initialized and unfortunately the answer at the moment is simply "don't". If this is a result of using min-ed-launcher you can specify the /nomin argument to force it not to minimize. A better solution may happen at some point but for now this is the situation.

Unrelated to that post, I am aware of some issues with crashes as a result of journal changes after this week's update. A good fit that should arrive very soon.

The issue was with the min-ed launcher. I updated through the old version of Observatory so I didn't see the note on the download page until now. This resolved the problem. Thank you.

Quick fix for crashes while in the bubble for players pledged to powers, plus some error handling improvements in general. More likely coming soon as the full scope of changes to the journal for Ascendancy are implemented.
  • Handles legal status Allied in status.json
  • More graceful handling of errors while reading journals in general, will now attempt to fall back to JournalBase before failing.
  • Error logging improvements

Hi - I've tried looking through previous posts, but can't find an answer - however, apologies if this is a repeat. Been using the app for a while now and like it but:
I don't really know my way around PCs terribly well, so any answers with an "idiots guide" if at all possible would be very appreciated (just finding the right link and installing from github stretched me a bit)... I play on a single monitor, full screen - is there a way I can get the pop ups regarding bio samples that EO displays to appear on my display in game? At present they only appear behind it - I have to alt/esc to see them, which is a bit of a mood killer.
I do have the notification enabled (hence i can see them when I switch screens), is there a simple setting I'm missing?

Are you running the game in borderless mode? If the display setting is exclusive full screen then observatory can't put a window "on top" of it.

As for a guide, I've been trying to link most people to the new site instead of GitHub, but seems like you followed an old link if you were digging around in the repo.

Yes - I have it set to full screen, so that answers that then. I'll stick with tabbing in & out as I'm not sure my current very old rig will handle windowed. Have a brand new system coming soon though, so maybe I'll try it then.
Thanks for the speedy response!

Hello, I noticed that the Herald plugin recently stopped working and no longer appears. It is installed in the folder, but it doesn’t show up in the plugin list. I tried reinstalling both the app and the plugin, but nothing helped. What could be causing this issue?

upd: I also noticed that in the folder where, apparently, the sounds for the plugin should be located, there’s nothing there. Could this be a problem? If so, where can I download the folder with all the sounds?

For me too, the problem is not due to us, it used to happen from time to time, in 1-2 days it should work again. It's an external service, it just hasn't happened for me for a long time.

As others have pointed out this was an issue with the provider which hosts the API used by Herald to retrieve voices. There was a period of downtime which has now (hopefully) passed.
