Elite on Console is dead - so why are FDev delaying Odyssey improvements for it?

We'll have to agree to disagree on what is 'good' then.

I am only playing on a 49" 4K TV. A fairly decent Sony Bravia FALD panel.

Ratchet and Clank looks stunning, Miles Morales, Spider-Man, Demon's Souls, AC: Valhalla and even Astrobot look excellent.

PS4 Pro non-1080p titles look 'good'.

Elite looks 'poor' in comparison, in my opinion. A blurry shimmering presentation compared to 'every' other game I play. This is why it needs a native version imo.

If you compare 4k with 1080p on a 4k screen, 1080p will always lose since the vast majority of 4k displays are quite poor when it comes to display content using a non-native resolution

You should really compare 1080p content vs 1080p content on the same 4k screen.

Did somebody mention console war?

Frontier's other IPs - including those recently announced like JW2 - are releasing native current-gen versions. It could be taken as evidence that we're reaching the end of development.

People like to moan about doom posts as much as people like to make doom posts but it's hard to not think that this is at least a small sign that ED is starting to come to an end.

Possibly the consoles don't return enough for the development cost/time so it's just a slow down on consoles. Dunno.

There's been 3 doom threads a day for the last 4 years. I'm sure things are merely business as usual

I mean, it's not merely business as usual. This isn't the 90s and consoles are not entirely new devices totally separate from the devices they superseded, backwards and ongoing compatibility is a thing and for FD to say no native version for the now current gen consoles is something to take note of; even if it's just simply that consoles will slowly be faded out that is not business as usual.

It doesn't mean it's doom but it's not business as usual; that means consoles will be phased out even if that's still some way down the road.

and for FD to say no native version for the now current gen consoles is something to take note of

Why?
Can you even go to the shop and buy an XB Series X or a PS5? (and no, buying from scalpers does not qualify as go to the shop)

And it's not like they said NO.
More like they said Not at the moment.

Maybe if things had been sent differently, we wouldn't be here. Here's something along the lines of what could have been said without making any sort of commitment:

"Thank you for you patience on this subject. We can clarify that we are currently focused on ensuring that Odyssey provides the best experience possible for players including ensuring that we provide the same on consoles once it is released later this year. The feasibility of creating native versions to current consoles is something we can look at after our promised goal of releasing Odyssey across all platforms. As the release on console and ensuring that the issues that are currently being reported on PC are remediated represents what we believe to be the best future for the game, it is not something we can provide any details on at this time. Of course, once we are in a position to share more information on this subject, we will be happy to communicate this to you."

As opposed to:

"Hi everyone. Odyssey will be released on PS4 and XBox one".

Thinking about it, I'd like to hope that the former represents the actual position right now.

Well to be fair, you can't go buy a new ps4 anymore either. Idk about xbox1 but Sony has discontinued its previous gen console manufacturing.

"So where can you buy a PS4? The last time we checked, there weren't many retailers with stock. Your best bet is to look for refurbished models (which are also hard to find, but not as difficult). Unfortunately there's no telling how long that stock might last, because retailers don't have a particularly healthy supply of stock these days."

”not at the moment“ is not a great thing to hear from FD right now. What they have said is “we don’t have anything to share on this right now, however, we can confirm that the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Odyssey are playable on next-gen consoles via backwards compatibility”.

So on one hand, yes it is typical “business as useful“ for FD, vague unless information that has us going backwards and forwards on the forums trying to work out where and what we should spend our time and money but on the other hand if they want to continue ongoing development on consoles I don’t see why this would be something they don’t want to share info on.

Fdev said they were 'still working on psvr' for years. Theyve gone ahead and said it's not going to happen but the ps4 faqs still says...

Will Elite Dangerous support PlayStation®VR?
Elite Dangerous is a flagship VR game on PC so of course, VR is important to us. It’s definitely something we’re looking into, but we have nothing to announce for launch

Notice that it was updated 2 months ago. Presumably a would be new player might read that and actually believe this is something that could happen. I'm pretty sure if nothing else, this is false advertising at the least

AND NOW I OWN A PSVR I BOUGHT FOR ED WITH NO HOPE OF ED ON PSVR. FDEV BUY MY VR OFF ME FOR YOUR LIES!!!!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬

Yeah that’s literally a perfect example.

In out stores, XB Series S is a constant presence since almost 3 months and it is sold in parallel with XB One S (although this one seems to be harder to find lately)
But XB Series X or PS5? Not a chance. Only at scalpers, PS5 going usually for the equivalent of 1000 Euros while XB series X for like 750-800 Euros.

But the base Xbox One runs the game in 1080p just like the PS4. No favouritism there.

It's only the Xbox One X and Series X (in BC) which run at 2160p.

FDev were not favouring MS at the time of the Xbox One X update. The PS4 Pro won't run the game at 2160p.

FDev are being equally unsupportive of both the Xbox Series X and PS5 by not creating a native version.

I don't see any issue in the game resolutions... I mean: it's the game that must be fixed, UI must be changed (reverse outfitting and the several submenus for mission board), darkness must be reduced and at that point even if the game runs at 1080p only it would be nice.

We're talking about the console version, so we currently don't experience the Odyssey issues you are mentioning. But believe me, on base PS4 the game is technically in a bad shape, and even not great on PS4 pro. That's why many players would love to have a PS5 version.

I dont always have game breaking issues. Buy yesterday I had 6 mauve adders in a 10 minute time span. I switched to FO76 after that.
