Elite on Console is dead - so why are FDev delaying Odyssey improvements for it?

but I was still hoping for a decent performance upgrade for the PS5 and now that isn’t happening there isn’t much point hanging around.

Are you trying to say that ED does not run Much Better on PS5 in compatibility mode than it does on PS4?
IIRC ED is not frame locked. It should run in 60fps on PS5 and if so a jump from 30 to 60 fps seems to me that's more than a decent performance upgrade....

In terms of pure 'performance' it is better in terms of loading, any menu interaction, and frame rate etc etc compared to both base PS4 and PS4 Pro.

I have played many hours on the PS5 now and the biggest issue is 1080p closely followed by the crashing issue.

Why people keep nitpicking PS5 owners who are not happy with Elite Dangerous on PS5 I've got no idea.

I can understand that running ED on PS5 in 1080p on a 4k screen is not good enough for some people (depending on the actual TV set and their personal tolerance to downscale artifacts).
But the resolution has nothing to do with performance. Within it's 1080p scope the new consoles are running ED much much better than XB1 and PS4 - yes, even the cheaper XB Series S runs ED better (in terms of performance) than the old console king, the XB One X - in 1080p ofcourse.

But claims as the one quoted, saying that PS5 does not bring a decent performance increase to ED, are simply disingenuous.
They're Fake, to be blunt.

My thought about the 1080p thing is they for sure could raise up to 1440 or 4k but not with out a full texture pack I have the game on ps4 pro as well as pc and when I side by side the 2. to my untrained eye the ps4 looks like it is upscaling from 790p to 1080p as a result it would look worse at a higher res. and I am sure no one wants or very few anyway would want to pay 70 dollars for an up grade just my thoughts I hope I am wrong to tell the truth

I'd say it's subjective. How many hours have you played Elite on the PS5 for? 0 isn't it?

I've played it on PS5 in backwards compatibility mode in 1080p since the PS5 launched. It looks and plays like a massive step backwards in 1080p mode. While it's true that there is a frame rate boost, in BC mode the points at which you get frame drops on PS4 you also get them on PS5, so it doesn't count as much as you'd think. It also suffers from CTDs on a regular basis.

Based on my experience, having played many hours of Elite in 1080p on PS5 since launch, I can safely say I won't be buying Odyssey unless they release a stable, native, 4K version.

I can't comment on the XBox Series X/S experience as I haven't played those.

see thats my fear that it would take a whole re write of the game to make it passable on ps5

Whilst this is a PS4 DLC it will be marketed to PS5 and without 4k it won't stack up well.
Elite Dangerous - Underwhelming might be a better title.
To be honest I don't think they are really even mentioning the PS5 or XSX in any online presence for Odyssey. It just talks about Xbox One and PS4.

Marketing a PS5 game stuck at 1080p as the only option in 2021 is anything but 'next gen'.

Maybe at least they will fix the crashing.

Correct, this is from elitedangerous.com ->

I guess today's news means that the console launch will slip to 2022. The third delay in a row for console players. There'll be none left at this rate..
I hate to say this...

It's launching this year. Guarantee it.
No, it won't be remotely ready, but it will pass Sony and Microsoft's standards by being usable.

Which, in its current state, EDO on PC is about where that bar is. Cyberpunk is a true outlier on getting kicked by Sony, but it was also heaps unstable compared to EDO and it was marketed as a next-gen title first...so that really ticked off Sony.

Anyways...

EDO will come to console this year. It will likely be severely downgraded graphically (which sort of defeats buying it at all) and there will be no changes/additions to content currently on offer to the PC version. Which means any console player already aware of how thin EDO is won't be buying it.

More importantly, if EDO doesn't fix multi-crew further...which it does not appear designed to...console is just going to stay dead because, hands down, multicrew (and winging in general) is the only 'feature' (broken as it is) that could possibly reinvigorate the console audience. Elite has huge multicrew potential when it comes to console. Absolutely wasted feature that should have been optimized and expanded months after its initial release.

Not launched and forgotten. Like most of the game's features.

I’ve always felt the community around ED is what made it such a legendary game, the game itself has a huge amount of nostalgia for me as I played elite on Amstrad CPC 464 way back when but I always felt the current iteration never lived up to the promises of FDEV and the expectations of the commanders, I also bought planet coaster and lost interest within a few days.
I feel sad for all the players for whom odyssey is a bitter disappointment and it certainly isn’t what I wanted or hoped for after all the hype and speculation but Elite dangerous will always have a special place in my heart for the commanders who live and breath a game that has never really been everything it could be.

We'll see. Right now the minimum requirement is barely enough for console, and we know the FPS aren't good even on above recommended.
Sony and microsoft doesn't care much about buggy release or anything, they let Cyperbunk and NMS being released.
But they don't want poor performances. They don't want to damage their precious console, and they don't want it to look poorly.

CP77 was pulled off because CDprojeckt told people to get refund from sony, and they'll grant them. Without consulting with them first. Sony don't like to refund. They really don't like to be forced to. They had to make an example.
As long as people don't refund, they don't care if it's buggy.

If you ask me, I think the reason why we don't have the gorgeous planet gen we had in the trailer/pre alpha stuff is because they had to downgrade it in the first place. They even avoided to use it in the alpha, remember ? We had some "not the one in release" weird planet gen.
I assume most of the issue came with downgrading the planet gen.

Is the spec of the XBox One & PS4 above the minimum spec listed? - Yes
Therefore Frontier have had to code the game to work on PCs of a lower spec than seven year old consoles.

Any 'down-grading' that they have had to do has been to allow PCs to function.
The graphics in game now are not as a result of consoles.
