Elite on Console is dead - so why are FDev delaying Odyssey improvements for it?

I have to say, moving from consoles (first one was a Sega Mega Drive incl. Mega CD add-on, and subsequently every single Sony console from PS1 to PS3, including PSP & Vita) for good over to PC - I played on PC before but before my PS3 days - was the best decision ever.

  • No longer gimped by fixed (and often behind the curve) hardware
  • Continued free online play (i.e. no subscriptions)
  • Free choice in terms of where I buy my games (although I'm a Steam fanboi I bought games elsewhere if necessary)
  • Vastly greater and more diverse library of games
  • True backwards capability (spanning decades of games)
  • Especially nowadays console exclusives are usually ending up on PC eventually (some at least) - as a Sony consoliero I was always envious of Forza, now I can play it on PC
  • No need to repurchase your library or keep your older consoles around - particularly with the recent enough increase of remasters. I buy a game once, I will be able to play it on whatever PC I own in the future, and it'll likely run better as well.

I haven't looked back (both last- and current gen consoles leave me completely cold) and I don't think I ever will.

The only bummer is price, PC gaming is more expensive initially, but over time it evens out - both in terms of hardware and software cost.
I can guarantee any PC I could afford would be worse than my ps4. I can't afford all the stress regarding possibly needing new hardware everytime I want to buy a new game. Or some family member Inadvertently putting thousands of viruses on it etc. With a console I know a game released on it will most likely (looking at you CP2077) will work on it with me requiring to spend more and jump through hoops.

Look at how many PC players in the forum keep having to compare specs and still can't seem to get the game working right on their respective machines. At least on a console I have all that peace of mind with what I'm getting

PC Vs Consoles isn't really what this thread is about. I still love my PS5 and considering the money I've just spent on a gaming PC which will probably be suited to 1440p gaming it shows just how good value the PS5 and XSX really are.

The main reason I have gone back into PC gaming after nearly a 13 years break is because Microsoft are finally starting to pump out exclusive titles I am interested in and having a PC + PS5 seems like the perfect combination.

I'll still be playing games on the PS5 for years to come. I to be honest will always prefer the ease of switch it on, it works, play the game, relax on the sofa.

On my old PC just with Elite Dangerous in anticipation of my new PCs arrival I had to jump through a ridiculous amount of hoops to get the Dualsense controller working flawlessly with Elite on PC as it does on PS5 (and I have lost functionality which I can however fall back on the Keyboard / Mouse to provide).

The PS5 is still a great place to play. Just not particularly with Elite at the moment. It's crying out for a native version of Elite.

I was also very happy with my ED on XB1s... at least until they did the bio/geo FSS update and i got the stuttering when getting close to planetary bodies.
That was the first time i regreted i didnt got a XB1X and i got the cheaper version - still when i got it, it was like 50% of the X price and it was the Minecraft Special Edition.

I also prefer to play ED on the XB than on my laptop... so i really hope they sort out EDO on consoles, then sort out a native version for the new consoles.
And that eventually we can buy the said consoles in the stores.

Next year maybe...

It's clear they are not ignoring the new consoles

They've no plans for the new consoles, never talk about them and haven't released any information about them for Odyssey or Elite. The official trailers for Odyssey make mention of every platform except the new consoles. If anything, it's clear that they are ignoring them. Unless I've missed something that makes it clear that they're not - in which case please let us all in on your source of surety.

I honestly have little issues on pc in general. Odyssey is the odd case, it's bugged across the board. If it was on PS4, it would be just as bugged.
I don't use consoles myself because they are not upgradable (I can swap any piece of the pc anytime), I can't use a controller (it's the tool of the devil), and they are a big investment up front (PC I switch pieces one by one).

People are sharing config in the hope to find a way to have it perform well, but the truth is, it won't. Unless you have a very expansive rig, then you won't get satisfying performance. Objectively, I know some people will come and say that 20fps is perfectly ok.

The biggest issue I have on pc are, ironically, PC port of console games. Where they don't care and slap a fps locked game that barely works with mouse and keyboard.

You're now in the same boat as me then. Welcome to the Halfway House!

Currently with GPU shortages driving prices up it's the worst time to argue for PC gaming, granted, and I'm not trying to convince you but I see a few misconceptions in your post that I feel need to be addressed:

I can guarantee any PC I could afford would be worse than my ps4. I can't afford all the stress regarding possibly needing new hardware everytime I want to buy a new game.
Even if you go for a mid-range PC, most games are scalable enough to be able to get by with the same hardware for at least as many years as the seemingly ever increasing cycle of console iterations. But yes they're more expensive than consoles, at least on an individual basis (how many last gen versions do we have at this stage? 2... or 3?
Or some family member Inadvertently putting thousands of viruses on it etc.
Restrictive guest accounts should do the trick. Or don't let them on it if they keep surfing the dodgy section of the web :) I haven't had a virus on my various PCs in decades, and I'm using standard MS Defender only. Being careful what to click on goes a long way.
With a console I know a game released on it will most likely (looking at you CP2077) will work on it with me requiring to spend more and jump through hoops.
It works great on PC (technically at least, it still has bugs but it's gotten better). Inexcusable what happened to consoles for sure, but it probably shouldn't have been even developed for last gen consoles to begin with.
Look at how many PC players in the forum keep having to compare specs and still can't seem to get the game working right on their respective machines. At least on a console I have all that peace of mind with what I'm getting
Well, it's a double edged sword - at least with PCs you have it somewhat in your hand to change/fix things (with almost all issues I faced in the past, they were not due to my particular hardware and there was usually a workaround available as others would experience the same problems, be that via config file fix, a mod, or gfx settings), with consoles you're sol and relying on the developer to sort it out.

Again, I don't want to derail this thread any further and I don't want to come across as the usual PC masterrace nerd, but it's a bit of an eye opener how much more control you have over your gaming hobby on this platform.

It's an accurate indication of where we are though. The conclusion appears to be either migrate to PC, or accept your fate in the long slow death of the console version of the game.
Sadly, the "old" gen of consoles are pretty much doomed now. They won't support them forever. That's an issue with consoles, always have been and always will be.
The PC I have is from the first PC I ever had, in 1998. I just keep changing part, and eventually none of that time were left. And none of those who came later. Consoles are something different.

Yes and this will be the last post on the (off) topic I promise :)

I agree Sony console plus PC is probably the best combo - for me personally it's just that console games don't do it for me these days (I'm more into sims now than I ever was) so I can easily ignore what's on offer there. A lot seems reheats of existing franchises so I don't feel like I'm missing out per se. Gran Turismo is the only game I'd love to play but even that, judging from videos, isn't really able to compete with the 'proper' racing sims I already own (and play with a wheel).

As for getting a controller to work with Elite though, I do play with an XBO controller and it works flawlessly (makes sense given it's MS) - I would actually like to give the DS pad a try but that's more on Sony not releasing decent drivers for PC for it I imagine (for good reasons, for them at least, I guess!). PC gaming for me is minimal fuss - I bought an off-the-shelf box, install Windows just like any other computer, and everything is close to plug&play as it gets.

Even consoles are more like computers these days (patches, set up account, network config, etc.) - the true days of plug and play gaming are over (like during the 16/32bit days - plop module/disc into console, switch on, play) and a minimum level of tech expertise is required even there.

Perhaps FD has separate DBs for console and PC, and never integrated/crosschecked PC_user_ID and Console_user_ID which would result in duplicate CMDRs.
It would indeed. My PlayStation CMDR is the same name as my PC CMDR for example. However, there is a unique Frontier ID which sits behind that. So it wouldn't be impossible to get around.

I've always wondered how 1st discoveries work in console-land, are they unique to the game (1st turn in takes precedence), or unique to the segregated platforms?

They are shared between all platforms. So in theory you could see discoveries from my CMDRs and you wouldn't know which platform it was from (Although I haven't discovered anything on my PC CMDR, so technically they are all PlayStation at the moment).

It's interesting when I dock on my PS5 Carrier with my PC CMDR. The name is the same but, the game realises it's not my carrier on PC so assume the Frontier ID behind it is working as intended to stop the game falling over. I assume I could have the same CMDR name on Xbox also. In fact my Xbox gamer tag is the same but, I don't own an Xbox.

I think that same system would work with Cross Save / Cross Play it it was ever implemented.

But unfortunately back on topic there are 'no plans' for that also just the same as there are 'no plans' for PS5 support.

Frontier have just confirmed in the PlayStation forum - after a year of speculation - that they have no plans to bring Odyssey natively to the PS5 or XBox Series X/S. Essentially this means they're not willing to invest any effort in current-gen architecture for the game on console and are only targeting the 8-year old PS4 and Xbox One.

The game will run on the current-gen consoles, but only in backwards compatibility mode, meaning any improvements available are limited to an unlocked frame rate and improved SSD R/W times. For example, playing Elite or Odyssey on the PS5 will offer a maximum resolution of 1080p.

The lack of investment in current architecture sends a clear message that Frontier do not view the console market as a worthwhile investment, outside of any sales they might pick up via existing players on the 8-year old PS4 and Xbox.

Why then, do we think they are delaying improvements to the PC version of Odyssey for the console release, when the console version of the game has just had it's death-knell sounded?

RIP Elite on console. You were always the unloved step-child.
I would say that this only further cements EDO is likely the last major installment for Elite. Not moving forward on console generation not only locks Elite down from continued improvement, but also contractually obliges the PC side to be hindered as well. Knowing this, and knowing that the growth potential for Elite is in consoles not PC...

(I'm a PS4 player by the by, so this makes me particularly sad)

Elite Dangerous is probably done for major development post console launch. New ships, continuing story, sure. It's not going to just 'die' (I hope?) but EDO has probably played it's best cards already: space legs. The fact so many features remain broken or at V1.0 in Horizons or base game speaks volumes about the future of EDO content. Installations and Megaships are still bugged, Powerplay...oh powerplay...C&P is still a joke, squadrons remain a woefully underbaked tool, and multi-crew...

Oh man, multicrew. The one feature that could really breathe life into Elite, especially on console.

This iteration is on its way out the door, me thinks. I could be wrong and we're spitballing months before EDO even launches (horribly, if I had to guess) on console. But when it does 'launch' (becomes accessible, bug-ridden and even worse-performing than PC on its first day) I suspect that'll be the first death knell. Because the PC sales, while I think good, didn't make enough scratch. Especially as more and more press realized how misleading (and still is misleading) the marketing for EDO has been. The console crowd is even more likely to review ratings on a title like this, now with multiple DLC (and thus higher cost of entry) and thus avoid it altogether in favor of other titles.

It's too bad. Elite has a great future on next-gen, especially if VR were taken seriously. VR is steadily breaking out (slowly by certain standards) on consoles. PS5's new VR could make a big splash and I suspect X-Box wouldn't be far behind. Microsoft certainly hasn't stopped investing in VR. The only thing that keeps Elite being a smash hit on consoles, really, is the severe quantity of keybinds. That's part of what makes it a great game, too, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to look at the game and identify better UI architecture to reduce those to something more manageable.

I was so hoping to experience Elite on PS5 (and in VR)...too bad, really. I'm still looking forward to trying VR in NMS when I get it, among many other titles I've got on backburner while waiting to get the new console.

Oh yeah, that reminds me AA. XCloud, the gamepass streaming service will be upgraded to X/SX machines soon, and then you can play ED in a browser in 4k, if you can't get a new GPU :p

Get the hell out of here with streaming gaming. Stadia and all the rest can take a hike. I want to at least pretend i own a product, not rent it.

Well, I hope you are not playing on Steam then, because technically speaking, you don't own the game there. Should you get banned from the platform, or if steam closed shop, you'd lose everything.

Oh, on topic : I do not own a console myself. I'm sorry if I can't help.

With XCloud you own it, since it's on gamepass too, so you have a win10 copy of ED, and that's what you can play streaming if you want. Even syncs save data. Unlike Stadia, this actually works :p
