Fiction Elite : Reclamation

I would disagree with the "GalCop Controls All" quote strongly - there was the war with the Thargoids for a start!

Bleh, "evil insect aliens" is hardly an interesting tension. Gameplay-wise they were fun of course, but they're of no interest to me in terms of story. FFE had some much more interesting story links with them, with wheeling and dealing going on in the background. Overall FFE was the best story-wise, with missions and activities that took account of the player's actions and tied in with the whole universe. But it was also kinda linear, which decreased replayability.

It will be nice to see a fusion of Elite's gameplay with FFE-style story and involvement.

Don't get me started on that. I thought "Prince" was a hereditary title, not an "award" to be handed out. It never really rang true.

All hereditary titles started somewhere ;) And these days we have things like Lords that are no longer hereditary. It's easy to imagine being made Prince of your own city or planet as a reward for extremely high service.

"For your unquestioning obedience and complete faithfulness to me, your emperor, I hereby declare you 'Prince'. Here is your ceremonial spiky collar as a reward.

Now here Prince! Heel! Go fetch the stick!"

Progress is picking up pace. Rather surprised myself this week by pulling more than a week ahead of schedule.

This weeks muse?

Sci-fi as a genre has the freedom to explore all sorts of topics; commentary on the social issues of the day, the impact of technology on civilisation, a darker exploration of the human psyche.

Elite:Reclamation then, as an 'Elite' story, what is it going to be looking at? It's all here...

Comments as always,

Cheers,

I have a question Drew, John Harper is currently editing his book, and Sarah Jane Avery (nothing to do with ED but she does work at Frontier) edited her last book herself.

Do you edit your own books? or is that a task for the publisher?

I do some editing myself, but I'm just not good enough. My publisher provides an editor who is far more brutal than I could ever be!

In this weeks update I talk about progress to date, how writing a book in the Elite universe differs from writing a stand alone novel and hint at some exciting possibilities that may be coming your way...

I'll be doing another video update to mark completing the first draft, so if you'd like a question answered 'on air Frontier-style', send them in to me - either by commenting on the blog or by email > drew at wagar dot org dot uk. (I assure you that no jumpers will be harmed in the making of this video)

See you next week.

............Was gonna say have fun while kids away and now your hols have started, but getting that first draft finished sounds like a good plan if not hard work!

As you say head down and charge into it, your almost there! good luck but i dont think you really need it! :)

Just hit 100k words.

'Woot', I think. Do people still say that? Whatever.

Not long before I finish the first draft! :D

Cheers,

Drew.

You might want to update your draft to a more modern vocabulary. Try phrases like "Pip pip, old bean, what ho?" when people greet each other and "Indeed, sir" when someone agrees with someone else. I assure you that it will feel more modern to your readers than "woot"...

:p
