Empyrion: Galactic Survival - First Impressions

I was only joking.

The graphics aren't the best, but the gameplay, if you get into the mind set, is fantastic. Planets and the general environment help greatly in EGS.
I'm no gfx junkie. I play pixel games and Dwarf fortress in ASCII mode It is just that ship and planet gfx seems to fall apart in quality in Empyrion. Maybe the mobile blocks need some simpler treatments. I actually like the simple surfaces of Stormworks, Minecraft, Valheim - when the gameplay behind allows complex interactions. Stormworks and Valheim have very nice water physics though. Is a pleasure sailing there.

I don't see that, but I'm not really looking. So we agree to disagree I suppose.

I see Empyrion as a fine space game, this and Space Engineers, seem to offer the best, for me. There-again I love building games, put that in space and I'm sort of hooked.

Edit: I would add that I can 'forgive a lot' in a game if the gameplay and believability is there, which it is, for me, in EGS.

Few more pics.

I came across a pyramid (as you do), plus a very tall statue. I'm yet to explore both properly, but had a quick look and there is a mission giver in the pyramid, they want some valuable artifact back that the Zirax stole from them. I may do the mission, but really this ship is for science/exploration and not battle, so not too sure if to bother.

That ship looks pretty awesome. Love the views from those massive curved window panels
If that comment was aimed at my ship, then thank you, I appreciate it. :)

The area with the large curved windows is deck 5, walking into that area when you've landed on a planet never ceases to please me. It's a recreation deck for the crew, with the planet layed out in front of you whilst your in your civies, warm, cosy and 'breathing' fresh air from the ships onboard systems, drinking a cuppa is quite something. (am I going too far)..
I live in the ship, odd but it gives you that level of immersion in-game, just nothing quite like it.

Mind you, you need good shields.. ;)

It was indeed!

It really has a look of sci-fi cruise liner, I love it. And yeah, I can picture it gently hovering over the planetary vistas for the enjoyment of the crowd. (y)

It's good view, but what about structural integrity? Do ships have shields?

One thing that EGS doesn’t do better than Space Engineers is “structural integrity.” Both games don’t model stress, but in SE, if you destroy an attaching block, the rest is treated as it’s own grid. In EGS, it remains “attached.” OTOH, you can take advantage of this to make “space opera” designs, so 🤷‍♀️

In SE windows aren't very resistant to shelling. But there is no force fields. There is gravitry fields... I mean I wouldn't be surprised if someone came up with some gravity field shielding. I once considered a reprintable physical shield that could rotate around the own ship and face the next enemy. But that would require some scripting which I am clueless about. But does Empyrion have any shield projector part? From the Depths has - you can have blocking shields, deflective shields.

There’s a shield deflector part. It uses refined pentaxid IIRC, the same stuff you use for the hyperdrive.

Also, I remembered that bases do have structural integrity: if a too long of a span is unsupported, it’ll break off. But for support purposes, any permutation of a structural block can function as a support, so you can build “floating” structures if you use some of the smaller greebling variants.

I think ships depend on what you think they're for. The ship in the pics is a exploration/science ship, not built for combat or indeed speed and agility.

I built boats for a living for around 35yrs, so these games fascinate me. There is no structural integrity in the games as such and there should/could be. However, if you put that integrity into your ships in your mind, i.e. you're confident a design would/could work, then your the player and you only need to impress yourself really. Don't forget we are building using 8x8 (old money) blocks with internal strength/stiffeners.

The reason I don't pick up 'from the depths', is because it would feel like a 'busmans holiday', so as to speak.

Yes, Capital Vessels can have T1 and T2 shields. You also need to be mindful of the separation of o2, fuel, ammo and generators because of potential chain reaction explosions. You can also have steel, hardened steel, combat steel and xeno blocks with xeno being the toughest and heaviest. For capital ship battles it's a good idea to have the core and CPU extenders behind armoured bulkheads as well. Core getting destroyed = a wreck, no matter how intact the ship is. A lot of designs have an extra, or the only, pilot seat buried in the ship for third person combat. Glass and bridges/cockpits can be a lethal combination.

It's worth checking out Project Eden or Reforged Eden scenarios. I believe RE is more MP centric than PE although I stand to be corrected.

Sounds good. Kinda like From the Depths with the core thing.

The thing I really miss in Emp as opposed to SE is, pistons, rotors, wheels, proper air, hinges (or was hinges skywanderers, now starship evo) and so on. Anyway, moving parts, other than doors & ramps etc.
Landing gear would be much more enjoyable if you didn't just have their option. Which also seems to pop in a little late every now and then. I don't use theirs now, no damage model in landing or bumping into things, so you can't go wrong, bang it down anywhere.
I joke of course I never bang the ship down, well not all the time that is.

SE had hinges as well. That is definitely one thing I’d like to see in EGS. In my EGS vs SE Sidewinder Edition thread, I spent way too many hours designing the folding landing gear on SE’s version of the Sidewinder. Designing the equivalent in a Cobra is one of the main attractions to doing a Cobra Edition revisit of that concept. :)

Very true, you can spend a lot of time on landing gear.
