Epic Games Accounts - Rules & Considerations

I accidently bind the Epic gained version of ED to the FD-account, where i already bind my steam bought account... :cautious:

..
  • This means that once the copy of Elite on Epic is no longer free, linking to a Frontier account with an established CMDR will waste your money and Epic account.

I have yet to get a clear answer to this. So does this mean once this free offer/special/sale/whatever is over in a few days, the account is not free to play anymore?
As in you have to pay for it to continue using it? This is getting too confusing. Frontier account, Steam account now Epic account. All conflicting with one another.
Why not just stick to one platform? I got the Epic one but I don't want it messing with my Steam version.

Steam are selling it for a fiver at the moment! but I can't buy another copy :\ If I create another Steam account with a new email then 'gift' it to me, would that seem a bit dodgy to Valve (two accounts on one computer)? really all I want is my alt pilot sitting in the seat next to me (and I guess the extra pip would be nice) and have everything running thru' one install.
I really don't know why Fdev have made this so bloody complicated!!! Sell us alt avatars for <redacted>s sake!

Not according to what Epic said. But it's up to Epic to keep honoring that agreement. Assume Epic goes out of business - what will happen with the games you bought or were gifted through Epic?
Arsen's warning was just that you can't link an Epic account with an FD account on the same email address and keep them independent. If (in a week's time) you buy ED from Epic, you should really use a different email address than what you used for your other ED account(s). If you use the same mail address for two accounts, the two accounts will be joined in the linking, leaving you with only one CMDR.

This is getting too confusing. Frontier account, Steam account now Epic account. All conflicting with one another.

That's up to you. Nobody forces you to get the game on FD, Steam AND Epic. Getting multiple accounts on FD only is the most comfortable option, as you can switch between CMDRs just by choosing the right launcher copy. Add either Steam or Epic to that, and it gets messy. Add both, and it really gets messy. Your decision if you want that mess in exchange for saving (at the most) 30 bucks. You'll need separate email addresses in either case.

Every other game they gave away has been free to keep forever. I'm not sure why folk think this would be any different.

So, to avoid confusions and frustrations:
1) I have Steam account on email1, i have ED on this Steam account and it is working ok
2) I have Epic account on email2, i got ED on Epic.

So when i download and start ED on Epic... I will have to select Link account so my Epic account is linked to a (new) Frontier account.
then what?
the ED launcher is starting and i can play on Epic account?
It is the same launcher as the one used for steam?
how it will interfere with the steam account?

can i have both ED accounts running at the same time? if so how?

Lots of questions i know :/

I used an email address not related to epic and it worked fine.

My process was:

Use a clean email account.

Open a new Frontier store account - (note there is another company called Frontier, a communications company, don't use that!) using the new "clean" email account. I then confirmed my account.

Then I downloaded the game off Epic and installed.

At the launcher I used link to new account and linked to my brand new Frontier account.

Game launched first time.

Where's the link bit? Was that when I said "share email with Frontier"? Although I used a different email address for Epic, so that shouldn't risk it...

Also once it's eventually downloaded over my slow connection does anyone know if I can copy it over to my laptop to avoid doing the download again? The plan's to have it running on that just to get someone sitting in an empty chair.

I know that's why I was asking. Everywhere I read about this Epic deal has this weird wording, like Arsen who I quoted.
"This means that once the copy of Elite on Epic is no longer free,"

Forgot that little nugget of information, needing both accounts running. All desire for a second CMDR has pretty much gone. Guess it would be nice to have a throwaway account for trying insane things but that's it...

Shouldn't be a problem, should it? That's why I was planning on one running on my laptop - wouldn't be all that playable on that, but it wouldn't need to be just to get someone in the chair.

Took another route... I have no steam version though, but an original FD game linked to oculus and the Epic version.
If you install the Epic version, use the main EDLauncher.exe to launch the game through the epic launcher.
If you copy the launcher however (include the commander name you want to use in the name, or w/e), you can use that launcher to bypass the Epic login and to log in manually with an account you already had. Keep it logged in, and create a shortcut for it. Rinse and repeat for the other account(s) you (may) have.

So now I got one game version installed, and 4 launchers. One for Epic login, 3 for the accounts I already had. One if those is added to the list of unknown sources in the Oculus launcher so I can launch my main account in VR as well.

Works like a charm.

Funny thing I have noticed when playing my Epic install (which is on a standard HD not the SSD like my Steam copy) is that is runs super smooth and about 5-10deg cooler than the steam copy ?!?! interesting...

5-10ºC, that's A LOT of difference. that can't be attributed to the launcher unless something really fishy is going on. are you sure this is not about performance/video settings being different? (don't forget potential external factors like e.g. nvidia experience). also, you have a margin of error of 100% ... which is a bit much. can you run some more accurate tests?

One thing you'll discover as you spend time here is that Frontier are very, very bad at phrasing their messages. They tend to try and be Legal and as a result end up as Confusing.

So to answer you and everyone else; "Free For This Week" is the purchase discount. Anyone claiming it during this week has it free FOREVER. You can uninstall, reinstall it at any time, it'll remain on your account. Anyone looking at it after this week will have to pay the then current purchase price.

There are microtransactions in game, namely player/ship skins, decals, cockpit bobble heads, and this cost extra money (or the slowly generating in game currency ARX) and that remains true for everyone.
