Epic Games Accounts - Rules & Considerations

Hello everyone! I'll try to keep this straight forward, short and sweet. I've done experimenting with the new Epic Games store and will now share with you some rules and tips so you can avoid wasting your time during account setup.

Rules for Elite accounts obtained via Epic Games Store:
  • Linking your copy of Elite purchased/obtained on the Epic Store to an existing PC account will result in your Epic account using the same CMDR from that account. This means that once the copy of Elite on Epic is no longer free, linking to a Frontier account with an established CMDR will waste your money and Epic account.
  • Epic Elite accounts can only be played via the Epic launcher. They are not playable via the Standard or Steam launchers.
  • If you create multiple Epic accounts and obtain a copy of Elite on each one, your Epic Games client must be logged into the purchasing Epic account in order to play the desired copy of the game. You can not simply log in to the alternate Epic account within the epic launcher.
  • When launching Elite from the Epic launcher after account linking has been completed; the launcher will automatically log in to the Frontier/Elite account associated with that epic account.
  • The Epic store version of the Elite launcher does allow you to log into your Standard or Steam purchased accounts after logging out of the auto-logged in Epic account.
  • The Epic install uses the same bindings, settings and control maps as the Standard and Steam installations of the Elite client as they are stored in your windows profile and not the installation folders. No configuration will be required for your alt accounts.

The above "rules" for the Epic store version of Elite were determined after establishing a new alt on my already existing epic account, creating a new epic account linked to a new gmail account for an intentional alt and creating a new epic account linked to the same email as my main account then linking that free copy to my main Frontier account.

Enjoy your free alts everyone!

EDIT @frontier: With how "exclusive" the Epic accounts for Elite are configured; I don't understand why this doesn't work the same as linking a PS4/XBox account to an established PC account. On my PS4 alt, which is linked to the same Frontier account as my main PC account I play a CMDR dedicated to that console. While playing in the same game world as my main PC account is a given; the account linking should work by using a different CMDR than the standard... At least that's the only way I can see avoiding the issue of refunds from accidental links of Epic accounts to established CMDR's when people inevitably use this as a means to procure alts after it is no longer free.
You’ve just broken the first rule of flight club.

I got both Steam/Epic accounts working nice together, without any conflicts or corruption. If you are interested, PM me.

So the link is not mandatory ?

We can have 2 launchers (Frontier and Epic) and run the game without interaction between the two games ? If I understand correctly in English.

Yes, you have 2 launchers but they look the same. One launches the regular (purchased) game, the other launches the free game. But you have to close one launcher first, before you start the next one. That way I can run both games on the same computer. They interact if both my ships move to the same location - in other words I would see my "free" ship (and I could shoot it down !) if I flew it to the same system as my regular ship.

Also, I could invite my new commander to ride in my ship as crew. So the two games running are separate, but they can interact if you want them to.

Of course I should imagine if you had two launchers on separate computers, running the two versions on different computers, there would be no need to close one launcher before starting the other. Again, the two games would interact if you want them to.

So I have one account brought from frontier and have got the epic games one, but only the frontier account loads from either launcher, how do I get the new account to work. Set up a new email for epic launcher and a new frontier account as well.

I added a pair of infographic style images to the OP to help explain how the EGS accounts work visually..

It is a lot of difference which is probably why I noticed it. The setting are exactly the same for both installs so I can't chalk it up to that. I also made sure that my nvidia setting were the same for both as well. vOv

TBH I haven't messed around with both installs enough to give a comprehensive result but I generally run at mid to late 70's on the steam install and the EGS install is running high 60-low 70's so far.... Dunno why. But tbh I'm not too fussed but thought it was worth a mention. If I see a more consistent difference etc I'll report back with it and some measurements.
I noticed while streaming Elite Week last night that I didn't run into the same performance problems I do streaming with the steam client each week which I found odd. Usually by the end of the 3 hour stream my computer is getting a little sluggish due to running 3x 3440x1440 monitors (I have two, but one is plugged in twice for a workspace to display media on stream) and usually I drop from 100+ FPS to about 40fps by the end and that didn't happen last night with the epic installed Elite client on my new free alt.

There are other (cache, logs, visited stars, trade data) things where the options are stored, I'm not so sure it is a good idea to use these with different commanders?

Anyway, I have created different Windows users for my installations and use runas to start them - however I was unable to make it work with Epic Store. :(
Interesting idea... We used to have to do that with Freelancer back in the day to play alts on servers in multiplayer. I'm personally not invested in separating the data between commanders that way though because while some items might be shared, the journals themselves aren't.

I think both the Steam and Epic version share some of the same folders just by Fdev design.
Yep.

Just logged into ED via the EGS launcher to my main account. Went to chance ship skins and none of my skins were available to fit. My ARX balance was also wrong (it was the same as the new epic account balance)

Got worried and logged into the account pages on the web to find all is ok with my balance and stuff I have already bought, gave me a fright there.

So I guess the launcher has way more input to how the game runs than simply booting it up and connecting to your account for accesses and permissions.

At this rate I'll be uninstalling the EGS one and going back to Steam and ignoring the new account if they don't sort these bugs out...
Interesting catch. I didn't actually pay attention to my ARX etc when tried to account I intentionally linked to my main during testing. I may go back and look at that again sometime.

Launch the epic game store app, then launch Elite from it, you should be prompted to link the account. If for some reason you canceled out of this prompt you may have to restart the launcher multiple times until it shows up. Make sure to hit "Options" > "Log Out Machine" at the top of the launcher to ensure that the epic version of the elite launcher isn't holding onto credentials so the account link will pop back up.

Still doesn’t work. I get asked to sign in with a frontier account, then asked for a verification code. When I enter this it says please purchase the game.

Are you by any chance using a portable version of FireFox as default browser? I do and had a similar problem. After I made the installed version of FF default, it worked.
Elite launcher attempts to hand off a long string Token to the browser, but the portable browser launcher thingy can't pass it to the browser and it gets truncated.
This is the same reason EDMC can't open Coriolis with your build.

Give it a try.

I have a stand alone launcher for my main account and now have an EPIC launcher for the free game for my alt account. I am able to run the accounts simultaneously no problem, you just have to close a launcher before launching the other account. My question is, how the hell do i get rid of the Epic store? I only downloaded it to get the free game. Am i now stuck with the Epic store to play the free game, what a PITA. I've tried accessing my new, free alt account using a standard launcher but it keeps saying i need to purchase the game.

Anyone managed to rid themselves of the Epic store??? and still use their free game??

TINSTAAFL, mate. If something is free, you are the product.

You took a free copy of a game that costs $7.50 on Steam and $20 from FD in exchange for using another game store app on top of whatever else you currently use, which comes with maintaining another friend's lists, linked cards, etc. Whether that is worth it is up to each person. I'd rather pay $7.50, or $20 and avoid all that. Free is usually not worth it, but it sure is shiny and people like shiny.

Epic simply purchased your patronage. I personally avoid business that purchase patrons, doesn't speak well of the business imo.
