I would go with ETS2, you can pick it up for less than $5 on sale. Then get the DLC if you like it.

Why ETS2 over the newer ATS?

Well, the Steam summer sale starts tomorrow, with £5 back for paypal users spending more than £20... So... Hmmm...

Because I live in the US and find it more interesting to drive in different countries. I also don't own ATS yet, so I can't comment on its quality. I am sure they are equally good. ETS2 has better steam user reviews than ATS, for what every that is worth.

Both ETS2 & ATS are very good, although ETS2 does tip the balance, for me anyway. I think the roads are more of a challenge in ETS2 than the long straights that ATS tends to give, especially with mods added. Of course, longer straighter roads are also fun.. ;)

Just a note. Graphically ATS wins, but not by a large margin. I go more for gameplay than graphics.

So what do people recommend for a new trucker? ETS2 or ATS?

I own both. I've played ETS2 for 137 hours and ATS for 87 hours. Both of them are awesome games. I personally prefer ATS mainly due to the America setting, I just feel like the roads and highways and scenery lend themselves to that trucker feeling better. However, that said, ETS2 has more content currently. It's an older game so it's more mature, meaning it's had more expansions and DLC released for it, so it really is the more fleshed out truck sim with regards to map size, trucks available, and truck accessory options and customizing. It won't be in a year or two, but for right now ETS2 just is.

The truth is though you can't go wrong with either one of them, and I play both fairly regularly.

I'll add my 2-cents, but it may not be worth that.

I bought ATS when it was released and played it a bit, but went back to ED (I don't really have the time to get into more than ED). I also tried ATS again when I got a Rift, and once more since then, but I couldn't remember how to do anything. It really looks great, and VR support is much better now than before (though I think I may prefer TrackIR and a big monitor). I may give up on ED for a few months and really give ATS a go (waiting for real improvements in ED). I think the map scale tweak is a huge improvement, but the map is still limited to the southwest. The trucks and trailers are bigger than in ETS2. Scenery is much better.

That being said, ETS2 is the more mature game. The graphics are a bit worse, but there are a lot more trucks and the map is bigger. And if you are in to modding, you can get and do a lot with more with ETS2.

As I'm not into modding, and I wanted the better out of the box experience, I went with ATS. I hope they eventually come out with an ETS3, as I'd really like to drive around Europe and see the sights.

Yep ETS2 is great. I have it in conjunction with ProMods, Rusmaps and Project Balkans. It's my go to drinking game on a weekend before going out for the night or if I decide to stay in.

Never had a desire to get ATS at all when everything I want is in ETS2 and it has more variations due to all the countries...

I got ETS2 (And all DLC at the time) on a whim, during Steam sales a couple of years ago. I never liked car games and didn't really play sims, either.

I basically have VR now, because of ETS2 and ED. My two favorite games. I have ATS but I have only played it a little, to check out the different style trucks (engine in front of the cab, instead of below it) and scenery. Mainly I just stick with ETS2 as I'm much further along.

Steam sales about to start up again, so if you're thinking about ETS2 or ATS - keep an eye on them :)

I prefer ETS due to the fact that I travelled lots of the locations myself and its incredibly fun playing the game and suddenly realising - hey I know this crossroad! I know this bridge!
Also, the feel of scale is much better in ETS - in ATS everything is scaled down way to much.

So what does this "ProMods" actually do. If I understand, you need ETS2 with all the (3?) major DLCs for it?

And these DLCs for ETS2 are just more countries/regions?

ps: The Steam Summer sale starts tonight I believe so I'll be keeping an eye out for an offer for ETS2+DLCs? Or ATS?

DLC`s are mostly paintjobs, extra cargo trailers (like extreme heavy stuff) and regions (East Europe, Scandinavia, and I think one for detailed France). I suggest you buy ETS2 not ATS - its more polished, has way more content, and the Europe is better scaled than USA, feels just right.

Just looked at ProMods and it says, 'requires all three map DLCs: “Going East!”, “Scandinavia”, and “Vive la France !”.'

There's no Steam option to buy all of those in one go... SO just got to hope so offer comes up over the next week to get them all at a reduced price. eg:-

You don't need all the DLC's to install Promods. There are links to grab a version that will work with the base game. However it won't have the polish (and bug fixing) of the later releases.

They will often put the game + all DLC (expansion ones at least) on sale as a bundle, it's how I picked it up last year. Just waiting for the France one to be on sale :)

If your'e signed into the site there is a "Compatibility" link at the top which will allow you to download earlier versions.
Ahhh...

For the sake of £10-20 I'd rather keep up to date and have less faffing about TBH. So I'll aim to get the game with the 3 DLC's and then run the latest Promod...

Don't blame you. It's a weirdly addictive game :)

That was true when ATS launched, but not anymore!!! SCS took half a year to rescale the entire ATS map to use the same scale factor as ETS2 does, so now America feels properly huge in the game. While doing this they also adde a few new cities to fill the gaps, and improved nearly ALL of the highway interchanges to mimick the actual American ones (they now are awesome).

This is one reason why I love and support SCS so damn much. They did all of that work for free just to ensure that the game was properly foundationed for all future addons and expansions. They didn't have to do it, but they agreed with the community and made the time to take care of it. Most developers would simply have kept going and not bothered, but today ATS is 100% better because they did. SCS is a developer who I rank up with the likes of Blizzard and Valve, a truly dedicated and exceptional group of people, who constantly stay in touch with their community and have zero inhibitions about regularly posting up roadmaps or development progress. I admire and respect them, and when they release a new DLC I always buy it just to support their awesome efforts.

Yeah, you could say I'm a huge fan of SCS.

I have around 850hrs in ETS2, but have had it from near the start. I didn't think I played it that often, but its so engrossing the hours just pass so quickly. With ATS its around 130hrs.

With ETS2, for quality its either Promods or MHAPro (I think that is what its called).
Less quality but a host of countries more, would be TSM 6.7, great compared to the past versions.
Lots of driving and large number of countries, but pretty basic quality would be Mario Map, which is huge, includes the US, south America...well more or less everywhere it seems (it isn't, but it is huge).
Rusmap will work fine with Promods or TSM, don't need it much for Mario as it already has Russia. I think Mario is just a combination of most maps available, but with sections added that are very basic in quality, but the drives are very long indeed.

There are other maps that work o.k. Panbase which is.....well.. not sure where it, think it may be Indonesia. Also china, Korea etc that can be found. You may have to mix the load around for some of these as they can be problematic.

I use TSM 6.7 and find its the only one I need. I like long haul and don't mind the lesser quality to promods. Also run rusmap with TSM, its a good combination. China and the other maps are o.k. but I don't bother with those so much now.

ATS with coast to coast map, again less quality, but long runs, is a good combination, plus Mexico, Canada etc.

Both are great games, its the truck that decided my favourite. I like European trucks, so tend to play ETS2 much more than ATS.

When I do use promods I always download via the payment way. It only costs around a £1 or so and helps the devs too. Plus keeps you away from some of these very dodgy host sites.. ;)
