Everspace 2

I look forward to giving it a spin tonight.

Suddenly, I've got a full plate of games! NMS: Interceptor; X4 6.0; and Everspace 2. Oh, Battlefield 2042 is finally really fun now, so that is taking up my time as well!

Where to begin...
 
Wow, i just tried the demo of this.. I couldn't stop playing, which is a good sign. Not getting it yet, too many unfinished games.

  • The quality of the graphics convinces me of being in space. That starfield is what elite should be.
  • On my little new 1080ti.. i can run it full effects at 2560x1600 with fsr quality. GPU at 100%. Satisfying.

Yeah that was fun. Feels like just the right space experience given nms is one thing and x is an rts and map building. Can't wait until its turn.

I am only level 5, but already about 9 hours of gameplay.

Simpy love how they designed those huge Asteroids. Best Asteroids i have ever seen in Space games.:geek:
 
So, apparently, I played this game back in May for nine hours...and then promptly forgot all about it. :) I only remembered it when I came across a video on Youtube that mentioned it in passing. I was like, "Didn't I buy that?" 🤔 I think a combination of the summer gaming pause and the hype about the forthcoming Starfield at the end of summer just wiped my memory.

Well, I booted it up and now I can't stop playing it. This is one heck of a fantastic game. I have since logged another 17 hours over the past week or so - quite the number for me! - and just keep discovering more and more about the game. It is a mistake to dismiss it as a mere "looter - shooter." There is a lot more to this game. Yes, the combat and resultant loot is ever-present, but there is much more. Just the ship customization is a game in itself. Being able to modify all aspects of your ship, from the looks to the functionality, really gives the player a sense of ownership, something I dare say rivals even Elite. I was flying a bomber for the last few hours but decided to pick up a Mercury C-1 scout because one of the side missions I was doing had some tight spaces that made my bulky bomber a bit awkward to fly. Here it is flying past a planetside G&B mining station:

I like the "veteran" decal I unlocked and, yes, the player can even customize the look of decals!

As I play this game, I am reminded of a debate we had here on the Elite forums. It was about whether it was better to have 400 million proc-gen star systems or a few handcrafted ones. I still think FDev made the right call for Elite in going large but proc-gen (as a necessity). However, after playing Everspace 2, I can also see what Elite is missing when it comes to amazing vistas.

While I was fitting out my new scout, I took a mission from a job board to recover some missing cargo. Well, I found it floating off of a massive asteroid that was truly breathtaking to behold:

The thing was a literal mountain floating in space. After I recovered the cargo, it was fun just to fly in and out of its many twists and turns. Heck, I even discovered a wreck of a ship for some loot, and a patch of crystals to mine. And this is just one of the many amazing things to see in this game. I am seeing the argument for handcrafted content in space games.

I am also enjoying the heck out of combat. Early on, it is mostly a shooter-'em-up but as you level up and explore the more difficult star systems (After 22 hours, I have only unlocked two, with neither fully explored), the combat can get really challenging. I recently had to tackle a destroyer that required not just guns blazing, but also smart flying, utilizing the surrounding cover of asteroids to dodge shots, as well as to ambush the destroyer's escorts. I also had to make quick in-and-out strafing runs to take out some turrets before the destroyer could melt my hull with its large guns. It took some doing but man did that fight feel good when it ended and I won:

I can't say enough about this game. Starfield this, Starfield that, but Everspace 2, a game infinitely more polished than Starfield, is ignored. (To be clear, I put in 70 hours in Starfield over the course of a month. I liked it but also found it to be a typical Year 1 space game in that it needs a lot more polishing and content to truly shine.) Don't make the mistake I made and ignore this excellent SP space game. Even before its first "major expansion" (next year according to the roadmap), Everspace 2 is a heck of a compelling space game well worth anybody's time. (I'm annoyed at it for stealing me away from X4 just as I got my fledging trading company up to a three-ship operation.:))

Yeah i know. I bought the ps5 edition physical.. only the other day got around to it, and even on second immediately couldn't deny how good it is. I want to give it some dedicated attention though so not now.

For me, the trick was to put the aim assist percent to about 75. This makes up for the inherent imprecision of console thumbsticks, feels just about right.

I also like it how the flight model is very deceptive, it plays like an arcade fps game, but as soon as you take your hands of the controls you drift quite a bit, more than elite fa on even. Always makes me think that's unexpected while drifting around.

You wanted to play it on April, 7th.

Anyone played Starbourne and Everspace? Which is better?
 
Its hard to say which one is better. Without a long dissertation, there are basic differences.

SB2: You are a character that pilots ships; walk around stations, planets, and large ships (including EVA)
ES2: You are your ship.

SB2: single source developer; graphics are not polished and not up to current trends but not immersion breaking imho
ES2: large development team; very nice graphics throughout

Flight models not significantly different imho.
The scenery factor goes to ES2.
Planetary surface activities goes to SB2.

SB2 has more bugs due to it being EA.
Tough question ... which is best. ??

Good assessment. I would add sound design to it, where also ES2 shines. Especially when it comes to voice acting, which are ai generated in SB2 and sound absolutely horrible :D they are totally immersion breaking to me.

Music any good? I will never forget that Morse theme from - which part was it again? - X2? Was that SOS code? They had some genuine compositions in the X franchise. Most game music is forgettable background stuff and then you get the Musty Scent of Fresh Paté and suddenly it's the Part Where He Kills You just while you where waiting for the Doom credits to scroll. Amazing. What pieces of art.

Most game music is forgettable background stuff and then you get the Musty Scent of Fresh Paté and suddenly it's the Part Where He Kills You just while you where waiting for the Doom credits to scroll. Amazing. What pieces of art.
I usually pay attention and remember good music in games, but I don't recall anything from ES2, so probably generic/ok? Subjective of course.
