Everyone new to the Thargoid war needs to understand first that Sol cannot be defended directly!

Well, this is where a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

If you don't know how the Thargoid war works - because you've not been paying much attention, since it hasn't hit any important systems before - you can grab a ship, show up to Sol, probably get blown up repeatedly but nevertheless see all the Thargoid stuff for the first time and be excited about it. At some point, maybe in a few weeks, you'll get a message that the Titan is vulnerable and you can rescue (what's left of) the Sol system ... and essentially get to speed run thro.......

Oh I know how the AX war goes, I wrote that in the post you reacted to. Been participating in the last four Titans go boom.

Still, knowing all that, this is the defense of Sol. It should have been organized differently. Hence, I'm taking my Crait II to Mars High as a base and fight Thargoids around Earth My Earth base, Abraham Lincoln, is all charred and black and dead - that's where I'll fight, with continents I recognize in the background

From someone who hasn't done much AX stuff: the most recent Galnet mentions having to fight elsewhere, but also says evaluation in Sol is still needed. Are evacuation missions also more effective elsewhere (and do they have any effect)?

Excellent question. As far as gameplay mechanics are concerned, evacuations in invaded systems are the most useful right now. As mentioned in the original post, "Titan systems are as good as impervious while too many Control systems exist." Sol is currently a Titan system. At this moment, Duamta is the top priority, followed by Tau Ceti (in game, look at the map in thargoid war mode). I don't know if any player activity in Sol actually makes a difference at this point in the process, but evacuating Earthers is certainly a rewarding thing to do if you want to roleplay.

It's not impossible that does help in the same way as rescues from the Titan itself would - since we've never had a Titan in a populated system before.

There's far too much noise to be able to actually test that one way or the other, of course.

Bet on it... even then we would win. Or could you imagine they would risk some gaming sites put up headlines like "Sol System in Elite Dangerous lost to Thargoids, as no players turned up to defend it"?

And in this case, there's not even that sort of deadline. Frontier have generally been smart enough not to set "must complete" and "strict deadline" on the same community event, so don't need to be anywhere near as obvious about it.

(Though if players fail to make Cocijo vulnerable by the 19th, I expect some sort of event to make sure it can't happen on the 26th either to give the "keep things ticking over" server team a break)

I admit I never fully grokked the ever-changing AX war rules.. But are you saying rescuing pods from Cocijo right now would affect invasion success in other systems? Is that the infamous "spread pushback"? Or would it just come into effect when Cocijo becomes vulnerable?

Invasion success, probably not. Pod rescues affect Counterstrike Control systems (currently, all Controls are also Counterstrike).

"Spread pushback" is Frontier's name for the Spire effect, which is somewhat different in how it gets applied.

I don't think indirect actions count for in-system material rewards, though again I'm not sure if that's ever been tested.

My main only ever got mat rewards for the spire systems themselves, not for anywhere progress was applied.
So yes if you want the mats it means hitting each individual system. (If they ever actually pay out now)

Absolutely.

It's just not clear right now if the script is for this Thursday to make Cocijo vulnerable - would be fitting for the anniversary - or the next Thursday, to put it all to end for Xmas for Titan boom, but this whole "Defend Sol" thingy is scripted and does not corelate with our actions. We could all take a break from the game or all put insane efforts in fighting, the numbers will go according to the script.

I believe it has been tested when the rewards for assisting in invasion/control clearance were added - the findings indicated pod rescues did not provide a qualifier for the rewards.

Probably logical, seeing how you could get some 40-50 counterstrikes around Raijin/Cocijo with their extensive control spheres.
