Exploring and Mining?

I'd go in my clipper except I don't want to get all that dirty mining stuff on the genuine wool carpeting in the companionways.
I think a clipper is just fine to mine that shiny blingbling metals ;) besides with it superior speed you could outrun almost any pirate who might cast an eye on your freight.

Can I just summarise this thread?

You're saying pop out of the bubble to an 'uncharted' system where you can mine a metal rich ring and then fly back? This way you don't get the RES grief and potentially make some good money?

I have a Python sat at Lembava I could kit out once I'm done with my latest exploring loop in the Asp, and have thought about mining next. This sounds like it might be a good idea.

Pretty much. You are looking for Pristine Metallic Rings. In the bubble virtually all Metallic Rings have been downgraded from Pristine. There are a few in the bubble, there may be many more, but it is only now becoming interesting enough to document.
I think the trick will be to find one in or near the bubble, again, not many looking and publishing details yet.
The good thing is that the data is not "secret", telling people will not harm the Pristine Level, and everyone gets to harvest any individual roid once and once only.

Slots and cargo capacity will be your concern when it comes to ships. IMHO Orca (at a push), Python, T9, Conda are the only ships worthy of the task.

Therefore, share the data:

Space is big enough for all of us.

I have been pootling about in the bubble experimenting with various mining configurations for the past week or two - hence by distress call to the Fuel Rats last week! - for the purpose of an explomining expedition.

my conclusion (from my limited hanger) is Imperial Clipper.
Pros include : cockpit view, easy enough to guide through asteroid fields, looks great in selfies (subjective), great boost noise
Cons : Fairly short jump range (but most of my exploring i 'economical' anyway

Current config : EDShipyard

probably that the beam lasers will go (i'm currently shooting pirates who interdict me near Antal)
I have gone with a small refinery as I'm only interested in the 6 'biggies' found in metallic rings (in truth i'll probably ditch silver too)

Probably heading out after the Explorer Selfie next weekend https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=157522 and a further fifteen versions at EDShipyard!

happy flying

That Clipper would work, the Size 7 for the Cargo is excellent, but I have no idea how people dock them manually.

SLOWLY!

i've only had it a week or so and it already looks like it's been used a scratching post by a rather large cat! I've spun it through the letterbox once and have now given up trying to use the green side. It's not called a Clipper for nothing!

is the lateral thrust that non existant or is there another reason?

They're a tad on the 'wide' side, so fitting through the slot when there's others about is a pain. Lateral thrust isn't great, but managable. Saying that though they're real nice ships to pilot (and waaaaay better than an Anaconda).

oh well, cant be worse than a t7 flying out of the station - i did hate that low built cockpit... (although with some practice i didnt hit my head anymore... still hated it ;) )

You get exploration data sales and you can come back with a hold full of bling-bling.

If you want to grind credits there are still better ways. But if you like spending alone-time in the deep black, with the stars whispering your name, you can't beat mining a metallic belt that no human has ever seen before - burn your name into the rocks and take home samples of fresh spicy platinum and palladium....

I'm a noble of The Empire; I dock my clipper elegantly.

Unless you really like The Fuel Rats you will need a "fuel scoop"
Ditto a refinery.
Also, you don't need 2 mining lasers; a continuous beam at the same point drops higher percentages in the chunks than 2 beams hitting different places. For energy management, you might want a multicannon for the ol' ultraviolence on that hardpoint, instead.
Get a collector drone controller in one of your smaller slots, and 3/4 fill your empty cargo tonnage with drones. That way you will a) have loads of drones so you can just sit and drink coffee and mine like a lord. b) you won't jump to someplace you can't get out of with a shorter range thanks to a hold full of precious metals.

I emphasize; be ready to run. When Longshot came back through the bubble with 50t of palladium, platinum, gold, and silver, she got an unusual amount of attention from pirates. I felt like I was swimming in shark infested waters with a porterhouse steak tied to my ankle.

I'm planning on tweaking this a bit more but next time I do a mine/explore run I am
going in a heavy tank.

Hey fellow explorers, it sounds to me like there is room for a few kitted out pythons that can pewpew off the annoying pirates but also do some serious mining. Im keen to form up with a few pythons or condas to go along on a hike. Im looking for some adventure, anyone game to join up?

Im in Australia time zone, Perth, 7 hours ahead of UK.

If you are in, contact me cmdr "Acteris".

Not sure what happened with the link there. I have a refinery & fuel scoop (certainly love the Fuel Rats but it's probably not fair to ask to be rescued every 100 or so ly!). Great tip about the Mining Laser though. I'll trial using one on my next few runs. I have found that 50% Drone to Cargo works for me.

current interation may switch the AMFU for another drone and ditch the Beams with the intention of enlisting an escort for the bubble.

My plan is to come back with a hold full of Painite! (for a cool 5Mcr - not including BB bonuses)

happy flying

I found this system, which I call "El Dorado"

pristine-metallic.jpg

Formerly pristine metallic rings around a gas giant. It's more metal than humanity can value. And it's rich strikes everywhere.

strike.jpg (Edit: I just noticed that that screenshot is from when I was mining in Atins, not the most recent trip. My screenshots are not well organized)

This is an authentic shot from El Dorado. Looks remarkably similar.
hitting-it.jpg

Some of the rocks were crazy; I found one that dropped 20 chunks of platinum ~30% palladium ~40%. I was tired just watching my hoppers fill.

loot.jpg

All in all I spent about 4 hours mining El Dorado and now my holds are full. The question is whether to explore further or come back in and sell this load.

el-dorado.jpg

One thing I can confirm is that painite is not only present in high intensity RES back in civilized space. Out here, in the deep black, with unimaginably enormous rings, it waits for the bold and well-equipped explorer to come tease it out.

I must admit, I don't mind moving commodities around for profit and political influence. In fact, I quite like it. But actually being a PRODUCER of commodities has never appealed to me much...until this thread.

I'm a bit intrigued by the idea now. I don't know if or when I'll be back to inhabited space...but should I make it (or choose to go) back, I'd have a go at this.
