Exploring and Mining?

I am starting to think that a reasonable strategy might be to kit up a T-9 with a load of mining gear and exploring gear, then go out and look for valuable ores in the pristine rings? I'm staring at a system that's a "mere" 1,200ly from human space and it'd be like mining at WAL-MART. Pristine high metal contnt rings everywhere.

Is anyone doing this?

I've got my exploration cobra fitted for mining with the intent of just pootling around and tasting metallic fields along my travels, once i'm back i've been trying to work out a viable convoy like system for mining in long distance systems.
Say a conda with a few t9's as escort
The conda can fuel/protect and carry the extra while the t9's get to work

So far i've found a few really REALLY good roids/rings of platinum/paladium at 70% or so last time i was out near the blaa dryou systems
But this time in my haste to get out there i forgot the dam mining lasers XD

The only problem i can see if kiling your jump range with a full haul of ore and being unable to jump back without losing some of your profits :(

OK, that decides me. When I get back from this expedition and turn it in I'll outfit a dual-mission mining and exploring T-9. Or maybe an Anaconda.

Using drones should free cargo space for more ore; this could have nice synergies.

My main profession.
I got an Asp. 70 tons cargo.
I mostly explore and go mining on the most beautyful location on my way home.
No, that is not boring.
Wanna share system names?

I also started another thread about setting up a gold seeker town 1000ly from sol. Got 3 metal rings. A community goal to build a station there would be great. Imagine a station as a trading hub. The only one in the galaxy to buy painite from.
And only what had been mined by players.

I will be trying it when I get back. My aim is to get a T9 anyway, might as well rig it for deep space mining. I need to improve the mining on my stats page, 1 ton is all it says lol.

Might possibly consider this at some stage. Will be interested to hear how you guys get on with it.

It's a shame that the Wings mechanics are what they are and that it's not possible to create a Trading/Mining Wing, where by the creator can set the % cut of others in that Wing. Then you could have group go out with one dedicated mining ship and the others as the couriers making the hops back to the station.

I'll post some about my experiences here, when I get back and get a ship equipped. I'm thinking that since I need to run through human-space to get out there, my usual rig of a ship that's all engines and no shields is going to have to change a bit. Many turretted beam thingies on the outside of a T9...

That's a cool suggestion!! More practically would be a couple of T-9s mining in the middle of nowhere and an occasional escort through human-space to squash any frisky NPCs.

Yeah, the escort Wing is a good idea as well. Possibly similar to the Out of Fuel, post a request somewhere asking for an escort and dropping them a couple of tonnes of whatever has been mined as payment?

Kancro is doing that I think maybe theyll chime in.

Thanks Murishani.

Yes indeed, I am kitted for mining as well, as I like mining from time to time.

However, this is my strategy: on my way out, it helps to sample the rings that I found, specially those accretion disks around stars mainly because those rings do not get reported in the scans, like those on planets. I think this was bound to be changed in 1.3. and now those disk's information will be available. I haven't being able to test that yet in PP mainly because I can't make three jumps in a row without being booted out, will report on findings once I get them.

So at that first stage I do not collect ores, just probe the disks/rings. And quite honestly, I have found very few METALLIC RINGS which are the ones you are looking for. HIGH METAL and ROCKY simply do not come up with high concentration enough of valuable ores so do not spend time on those. I also have tables indicating the frequency and chances of getting good ores in those types. Needless to say, ICY rings are not exploitable. Results are disappointing though, because even the METALLIC RINGS are very low in high valuable ores. Mining is really a pain with little gain.

All being said, few changes to keep in mind in 1.3.: supposedly the general quantity of ores was raised, there are two new ores that have become more valuable than metals: osmium and painite -you find both in the rocky rings as they are minerals and, there are now low RES, RES and HIGH RES, supposedly bearing corresponding quantities and also danger. I imagine pristine rings in the deep blue to be treated as the regular RES density back in civilization according to this. I have yet to test if this is true.

Finally, I will start to mine for ores in the last 5,000 ly of my trip so the mass doesn't really slow me down that much. Also, I don't currently have limpets or drones and not sure I will ever use them as I already use all of my internals in a diversity of modules. Think the drones would demand mining to require even more modules than already did in 1.2.

This all sounds really exciting (certainly not boring!) I am just preparing for an epic voyage - the idea to circumnavigate the galaxy... (!!!) in a T6 (???!!!)
Well, maybe that's a little ambitious for my first sortie, but at least go and find a black hole and maybe a system that hasn't been found before... I'd really be interested in accompanying some other ships, I think the convoys of transporters you come across in space look so cool... I don't really know how to join a group yet, but I can find out.

I'm going to get a mining laser and refinery on my ship, any maybe we can find some metals and things that have never been discovered... or some ancient ruins of some long dead civilisation on some asteroid, that we could tow back to 'civilised' space and hold an exhibition with... dunno!

As you can tell, I haven't been on a sortie yet... well nothing beyond about 50LY outside civilised space.

I have some questions, which I'd like to clear up.... when I did venture out, (by accident - at a time I thought the entire galaxy was populated) I didn't encounter anything but red dwarfs with no planets, and nothing. I hear that outside civilisation you don't get attacked (so why is it called civilisation??). On the other hand, the diamond back explorer says it's useful for "supporting deep space operations in hostile environments". So, do you need weapons when exploring, or not? That's my first question.

Second question: do you really get stuff like asteroids, out in unexplored space? I never saw any when I was there. Just single red dwarves with code-like names. What about Easter Eggs.... I heard there was a freighter carrying a consignment of them that got caught in some crossfire, which propelled these chocolatey novelties in all different directions across space... anybody found anything?

Love your entusiasm but you won't find anicent civilizations or ruins. No exotic metals never seen before. As of now you don't need any weapons for exploring except if you want to fight the few interdictions that may happen in and out of Civ space or if you are pledged to a Power and travel into a hostile Powers territories. When we get aliens out in deep space maybe weapons is more needed. Don't get me wrong, I'm packing heat in my Asp but that is my own choice and not a necessity and sacrifice jump range because of it.

Out of the bubble there aren't any defined RESs but you can enter asteroid fields and rings.

I also have been toying with the mining/exploration combo idea, but never went anywhere with it as my largest ship at the moment is my Asp, and, well, mining.

That said, now that Painite and the like have been added it might be quite worthwhile, but for me may have to wait until I upgrade ships, which likely won't happen for a while yet. Be interested in hearing loadouts or ship combos from people that do try it though, and how well they worked.

It would be great if there was exploration driven expansion.

But only mined by players won't happen, and shouldn't happen. We're not snowflakes, we're all singing all dancing crap, just like the NPCs.

I have not the slightest idea whats that supposed to mean.

Anyway, I switched my repair kit with a collector limpet. Just for the giveitatry.
Never had any problems with the modules so far.

Well, that sir, would really be a cool idea. Imagine the conversations you would have at a meeting point that "far" out. Very immersive
