Exploring

Should I sell data at nearest point or take to Palin, cant get rid of cargo rescued some poor people whose shop crashed. Dropped out powerplay that was a good idea. Don't think I will be chased out here.
Worked out when to engage high jump, when fuel scoop disengages and planet stalk on radar moves to 2nd circle away, getting faster now...

Sod the poor people whose ship crashed, their salvaged cargo could be the death of your ship too!

Personally, in your case (what I did to get Palin's data, I landed at Fu station, I had all my fleet parked there, so changed from my Asp to my Python. I then went through the list of exploration data totting up each page. Once I had my total I deducted off what Palin needed & kept that amount & knowing how much of the remainder I could sell, I spread it around just getting to allied at each station then moving on.
When I only had Palin's value left, I plotted (using only 0 population systems) a route straight to Palin's system & jump, scoop, jump etc... my way there, with no interference from NPC's & I never play in open when travelling.

My way was partly due to not wanting to pewpew & even if I was 'dicted & lost the mini game, I would keep boosting until I could 'Brave Sir Robin' it away.
Other players are better adapted to pewpew thanme though.

If you're confident to do it as described then do it, just bear in mind that if you lose your ship, you'll have to do another trip to get that value of data again

Just checking again, I went to Deciat & visited Farseer for FSD. She goes to FSD level 5 (need 1 unit of Meta Alloys). Once unlocked, selling her data increased levels as well as crafting.
I went to Palin later for lvl 5 Thrusters. With Palin you need to travel at least 5k from your starting system, as I'd already been to Beagle Point, that part was already covered.

All, right, just came back from short - ~1k LY one way - exploration trip. Previously made ~15k LY loop so I feel I can contribute. Since you are still progressing you can apply suggestions when you get back.

So, for exploration must have and bare minimum is top FSD and Fuel Scoop. This gives you range and as little downtime while refuelling as possible. Next thing is mass - the lower the better which means longer jumps. Non-engineered DBX I have pushed past 36 LY max range with av. of 32-34 LY. Everything done with proper loadout. As you already noticed - light hull helps. Past that - D-rated rest. Weapons are unusable past bubble so no need to keep them. Aim for the smallest Power Plant that can sustain your needs. Had 5A, later "upgraded" to 4D to finally end with 2A.

SRV, shields and AFMU - based on what you want to do. Since DBX does not possess enough harpoints to fit all desired subsystems I went with AFMU and shields for 15k LY loop. Didn't really need that as had just one non standard SC drop that resulted in 2% hull damage. Seeing you at 91% after 3700 LY makes me start to think you are a bit... careless. My recent trip (~2.5k LY total) I went no shields, no AFMU, no SRV. My only damage was wear and tear of paint. Anyway, short and medium trips can be made without shields and AFMU. Longer trips - AFMU is good to have / mandatory. Some equip 2x AFMU to be extra sure. SRV is good if you want to do the sightseeing and/or gather some materials for your needs.

As for what to scan. You need BOTH adv. discovery scanner so it can detect ALL bodies within star system and then Detailed Surface Scanner to get additional data and extra cash for detailed scans. You can do the scientific way - determine star class, calculate "life zone" and then look at the bodies within set range. I'm lazy and what I do is enter system, honk and start to scan a star (at SC and 0% throttle). Then I enter system map and do "visual check".

Monocolor white, beige and orang-ish are no-go. Gas giants are easily distinguishable so no worries here. What I look after are: brown with white dotted (usually clouds), monocolor blue (water worlds) and blue/green with white dots (earth-like's). 100% hit chance. I tend to take high metal for earth-like due to clouds despite obvious brown and not blue color. But at least it's valuable world, not some rocky or icy body.

If oyu have time you can always scan ALL bodies, but above will gave you quick answer whether to even scan or not.

Why do I need to give data to Palin? He just asks for distance?

You don't give Palin data, but once unlocked selling data to him will increase your rep with him & will move you to unlock the next engineering level like crafting does.

What I meant was keeping enough data handy to sell to raise your rank quicker, more so in the past when engineers first started & they needed quite a bit of materials per mod try & some mats were very hard to get hold of. It was easier to get to the top level by selling what the engineer wanted (some wanted data).

Cheers for valuable info, my loadout can be improved and I am getting quicker at deciding to scan or not. M star class forget it as too cold, K pretty good. If already discovered system I normally move on, if up to 1000 ly may be life zone, but of loads of good things I may scan all occasionally, most coloured planets seem To be high metaland i know no atmos means could be water or earth like, shame we can't land on them. Dont think I am careless 50 jumps for 1000 ly is lots anyway heading back at 90 % hull, have left my passengers on a distant planet, they should be ok (!), but i still have a large data cache worth 150 K. Have military hull, Shields and defence for when I get back, so thats good. Was tempted to land at a high metal planet, but it was 2.7g so caution too control here, will try high g landings another time.
Heading up for to blue flash nebula now, many people have been this route I see....

Maybe those passengers were on stasis from an old formidine rift expedition, it was a funny shaped pod, at a crash guarded by a system pilot long way put of the bubble, and if I had delivered them a special message could have come up. Now I left them on a remote planet..
Found my 1st ammonia world, so better not a-moan-ia...

A tip I use when landing, irrespective of it's 'g', I always enter the planet @ a speed of 25% throttle & an angle of 35-40 degrees, Iv not bounced any of my big three yet doing it this way.

Plus I always drop to 0 throttle & look again in the system map at the planet I'm gonna land on, to double check it's g value once Iv scanned it.

I don't pick up anything when exploring outside the bubble, apart from mats for my ship or SRV. I don't normally do it in the bubble either unless I'm in my 'vette or cutter.

This post thread has reminded me that Iv still got my Asp modded for Exploration & my Python docked at Jaques Station with other ships. When I'm back at a station I'll get the two ships transported back to the bubble, Iv no intention of returning to Jaques in the foreseeable future.

Ty do you keep 4 pips to systems, or to eng?
I keep to sys to prevent star heat damage, not sure effect
I travel with 4 pips ENG, 2 pips SYS. If you are too hot, best to fly away as fast as possible.

People have gone to Sag A* in a Sidewinder so there is no bad choice for a ship. Mil armour is a bit of overkill. Once clear of core space you won't need it. (Until 2.4+ anyway.) Your limited jump range will get you a lot more stars to sample.

On my journey out to the galactic edge, I went with economic jumps and stopped at every star along the way. I found a lot of stuff doing that, scanning everything in the system except for ice balls. On the way back, I travel fast mode with only scans for what is in range from the arrival point, unless it is high value like ELW, WW or AW.

Found a super quick way to slow down, when in hyper fsd tunnel thing, start a local chat (xbox), on entry to system, enter msg and you have slowed down immediately to about 70 km/s, much quicket deacceleration

I am realising my errors, my mass is too heavy, I kept military hull which is 40 ton, as I didn't want to crash land, and some other things, I didn't really need

Well, you're smart to have made a short shakedown cruise where you know you'll come back and refit. The people who just head off for the core with no experience are the only ones making a mistake.

One tip I'll suggest is to get the heavy armor mod from Selene Jean. Apply it to a lightweight alloy hull. It doesn't add any weight! The blueprint says it does, but with lightweight alloys, it doesn't. All benefit. No downside.

Crashed into a star or two? You'll have to be more careful when you're exploring for real. You can't repair your hull.

the visual (and audio) clue to planet type is not clear to me.

Same here, at least for the audio. Supposedly there are chirping birds on earth-likes, but I can never hear them. Going by the visual though, I think I get most of the good ones.

Is it worth scanning moons, have to get real close to them.

Not for money, no. They're like 500 credits. If you're looking for a particular surface material, then maybe. Supposedly, alien surface bases will be detectable from orbit in a future patch, so that might change things as well.

I have a 6A fuel scoop

I recommend that you give the 6B a try. It is significantly cheaper (if that's a concern for you), has higher integrity (one less thing to spend AFMU on), and in my experience, it's more than good enough. I always manage to full top off if the star is scoopable.

I also recommend downgrading to the 16 ton fuel tank on an Asp. Here's my build - it looks like my range is quite short (four jumps) but I scoop so fast, it's never a problem. I don't even use the route filter (to plot a route using only scoopable stars). There's just (almost) always a scoopable star within four jumps.

Twice so far I've gotten low, so I just hopped on the galaxy map and selected a different star. No big deal. But my range is great so I really haul . 1000 light years is typically about 20 jumps.

5A thruster

That gives you more of a margin for error on high-G worlds. What I do is to just avoid those ers.

only 1 fuel tank (not sure if really need 2)

In my opinion, no.

2A beam laser, chaff, ... and point defence (why? Maybe aliens)

Okay whatever. Just dead weight in my opinion.

can heat sink ammo be replenished?

No, not yet anyway. That'd be a neat synthesis option, if fdev is listening. There is a lightweight mod for them though, if you have the engineer unlocked. I didn't.

It does state the gravity level in the HUD once you enter orbit, right underneath the coordinates.

Not sure if you're aware, but the number it shows when you first enter orbit is lower than the final value.

Ty good notes, landed on a 1.8g metal rich planet (sys map rating) nervously but ok hull 89%, but not many goodies there. Need some technium (I think thats the name), is it 24 hrs to clear the pp vendetta after you leave a faction, menu says 1 day and I do not want to get back to near the bubble too early....how far out do npc start to appear? This space makes one nervous about getting too close...never worried before

They can appear up to about 500ly from the bubble, but that's uncommon. Though if you have cargo... If you're worried, you can contact the Iridium Wing (link), they'll escort you in. They're good.

Great info didn't know of iridium wing, out of interest is it same to explore in solo, (can you do cg in solo? Thats the most dangerous activity). I have started with mobius, but out here there is no one around...maybe I return in solo mode?
