FaceTrackNoIR Guide with PS3 Cam

If you're using the IR part of FTNIR then you can set it to upto 100 fps. To do this, you have to go into the pointtracker settings, go to the camera tab and set the resolution to 320x240. Stop the tracker and start it again for the changes to come into place. This will also have the effect of pushing FTs cpu usage down to pretty much nothing. While you're in there, you can set the cameras angle (minus degrees if the camera is above you looking down). Next, set the Point Extraction Threshold to as low as it will go before the camera sees IR everywhere. And the most important setting that has the biggest difference, use the calibration tab to tell FT how far away from your head the clip is by clicking the calibrate button under the model tab and waving your head around in circles until the numbers start to stabilise. Also, it's best to go into the keybinds section and set FT to keep tracking under the engine tracker options as FT goes a bit wild on the cpu if set to Stop Engine when you pause the tracker. These steps can have a big effect on the responsiveness of your tracker, making it pretty much as good as TrackIR.

Tahnk you Yabba, but I was planning to use PS3 eye for the face tracking at 120 FPS, I don't own any IR clips. Sadly I discovered that facetracknoir uses non commercial faceAPI as tracker. That version does not allow to select advanced camera settings. It will see PS3 eye as a 640x480 @60 fps cam and it seems there's no way to change that. This is causing also some CPU issues with framerate drops in game while using facetracknoir.

I'm lurking the net in serarch of some clues to modify the PS3 eye base settings. Actually the only way to modify cam settings is to use the driver software CL eye test, that is not compatible with ftnoir (it causes ftnoir to not recognise the camera).
I hope to find a solution or I will have to hack the PS3 eye and go for the 3 point IR clips.

Thanks G.T for this guide, it has been very helpful and I'm using FaceTrackNoIR with great results! :)
I've always been a FreeTrack user but for some reason my setup glitches the HUD in Elite: Dangerous, so for that reason I bought a PS3 eye in the hope to solve that problem but I couldn't use it for FreeTrack because it's IR-filtering was too much. I couldn't use OpenTrack either as it didn't allow me to disable autoexposure for my XBox360 cam, which I use with FreeTrack.

I did make some changes to the FaceTrackNoIR profile though as I wasn't used to the curves you use, I also disabled Z-axis as I find it caused a bit of jitter and unwanted zooming and gives carefree headtracking.
If nobody minds I will upload my settings for every one to try out, I have a few years of experience with headtracking and know how difficult it can be to get good settings.

OP - Huge thanks for posting all this info. I had no idea that FaceTrackNoIR even existed. For £6 I now have awesome headtracking :)

Vacuum Cleaner - thanks for posting your config file too - I do find this one a bit smoother when panning, and the zooming was annoying too.

I just have one annoying niggle which wasn't there to begin with. Initially I could reset my view within the game, using Shift+Home or whatever keybinding I'd chosen. When I pressed this, I'd get the 'bong' sound confirming it had re-centred the view.

For some reason though, I now have to Alt+Tab out of game and into FaceTrack before it re-centres the view. Have tried reinstalling FaceTrack but it made no difference. Any idea what might be causing this?

thanks
Danny

What about being able to use the mouse for headlook at the same time while useing head tracking. Any way to do that? Was hoping I could use the mouse to look after pausing head tracking via the key sequence.

Okay, dumb question... How do you install opentrack... Downloaded from here, but there is no installer...

Thanks G.T i have just used your Facetrack Noir guide to set up webcam facetracking for the first time, its great! Thanks again. CMDR Westyb.

Thanks for some valuable info here.. PS3 Eye Cam Facetracknoir and a deanclip.. works a treat and I cant imagine going back to ED without it. Made it so much easier to track those ships trying to maneuver away :) Actually sold up the FDL and went back to the Vulture as its just an awesome mix being able to keep on their 6 the whole time :p Love it.. Still trying to work out smoothing settings etc, but after 3-4hrs of gameplay no motion sickness so very happy. Was going to look into getting a 34" curved screen but dont think I will need to, so a small investment of $30 and im a happy chappy..

Will try it out in war thunder as well =)

It works a treat in War Thunder, it's where I got it working before E:D Alpha came into being.

Hello commanders! I don't know if this is the right place to post and I'm sorry for necroing this thread but I've noticed there are most people that know very well how facetracknoir works and I'd like to ask a thing a little off-topic (well not so much given that the same thing could be applied in Elite Dangerous).
My question is: can Facetracknoir replicate a key pressure instead of free tracking? I'm thinking about the leaning to left and right in first person shooters where you usually hit the "Q" and "E" key to lean through corners. I.E. I'd like my roll movement readed by webcam being transalted into a key pressure, but I did'nt found anything related..Many thanks in advance to all!

Hello Commanders! I'm sorry I am doing some necromancy, but I have a problem. I can't get FaceTrackNoIR nor OpenTrack to work.

I built myself a neat IR clip with three IR LEDs, attachable to my headset, with a power supply, neat. I did it because initially I couldn't get faceApi to detect my camera, but PointTracker worked.

Now I try to run OpenTrack with PointTracker 1.1 aaaaaand nothing happens. Huh. I switch to FaceTrackNoIR. faceApi 3.2.6. now inexplicably picks up my camera and detects my face... but it's not quite acceptable for gameplay, there are some issues. PointTracker 1.0 (nor 1.1) doesn't even detect my camera now, only shows a black screen, and "currently being used" LED on my PS3Eye doesn't turn on.

I'm lost now.

  • Windows 7 64-bit

  • CL-Eye drivers 5.3.0.0341
  • FaceTrackNoIR 1.7 with PointTracker 1.0 (tried that)
  • FaceTrackNoIR 2.0 with PointTracker 1.1 (also tried that)
  • OpenTrack 2.3.11 portable (doesn't see my camera at all)
  • OpenTrack 2.2 (same as 2.3.11)
  • Tried installing ManyCams and using it's virtual camera (doesn't change anything)

  • PointTracker keeps telling me CameraInfo 0x0 pixels at 0FPS
  • faceApi in FaceTrackNoIR works just fine, and when I use it, red LED "ON" lights up on my camera
  • no other setting from faceApi in FTNI works, and the red LED "ON" doesn't light up

I just can't figure out what the hell is wrong, and I really wanted to use my IR clip.
