FD, I implore you, do not bulldoze over our existing gear and upgrades

Yes but in 2017 you don't have to deliver arbitrary materials to obscure people for them to provide you an object with random properties. You go into a store and buy the stuff.

That said, I would be all for an item reset that eradicates engineers for good and reinstates the pre-2.1 status quo where you just bought your gear with credits. But as it stands there is no reason to assume engineers will go away, and thus any near gear that replaces an existing item means you also have to repeat the engineering on that new item.

Only this time, you actually have to gather the correct mats for your 2000 re-rolls of G5 whatever.

I think there's a whole lot of Chicken Little-ing going on here.

But speculate away, I'll grab a bag of kernels and heat up the oil.

If, then only when docking the ship please. If my engineered jump drive gets back to standard right now, i am dead in space :D
And i have no problems with any kind of this procedure... I dont care for god rolls at all.

That is exactly what I (and others) have been arguing right from the start when details about engineers were announced.

And if I wanted a game where the status quo is regularly raised and you have to grind for new, higher level gear each time, I would play World of g Warcraft.

I've read this three times now, and it's keeps sounding like "WAAA! I don't have the BEST stuff any more! WAAA!"

Oh, I don't think we need this to be a regular thing. We do need it now, though. It even makes sense. A powerful species is on the horizon and we need to defend ourselves. It's likely this would be the last bit of power creep we experience.

war always drives technological advance at a higher pace - in militarily useful areas. its after the war when non military uses start being found, and other tech catches up.

As I said already: any real life analogy fails here because in real life you walk into a store, put down cash and get your stuff. You don't have to hand in materials that are to be found randomly in various locations to obscure people who then create you the product with randomly varying properties.

- Make the new tech only work on aliens, which means PvE / PvP-Combat they will be ineffective

This could actually be a very interesting choice. Both upping the need to be armed with new-tech weapons for protection against the Thargoids, but by doing so, losing effective firepower vs. human ships.

No, what I meant is "WAAA! I have to RNGineer my gear from scratch! WAAA!". :p

I'd be all for an item reset that means no more engineers (or any other RNG) for that new gear tier.

We have to speak up now. By the time we know what is going to come in terms of what Ed mentioned as "new weapons" it will all be set in stone already.

Our weapons currently do absoutely no damage to Thargoids... So clearly we will need some kind of upgrade or new weapon. Unless we are just to become cannon fodder. If these new weapons are more powerful than currently engineered weapons, so what? Presumably everyone will have the chance to obtain them. It may even be that you need to use special weapons against Thargoids that actually have very limited effect against our technology (which would make a lot of sense, in my view).

And most likely a lot of the Thargoid stuff is set in stone already. As they are releasing content gradually after 2.4 drops, I would suspect that a lot of it is there and pretty much ready to go.

Either way, I still find it amazing the number of threads that end up discussing things that are mainly people's paranoia about things they don't want to happen to "their game"...

Back when the 2.1 Day of Dismay dropped - and we realised the sheer extent of repetitive frustrating tasks ahead of us to remain max-level, I said that after much thought I'd decided to do it this time but doubted I'd have the will to repeat it all, if the same thing ever happened again.

However, I am now - guardedly - more optimistic. RNGineering is a heck of a lot less painful now than in its first incarnation (reduced mats, no commodities, triple spawn, missions boards fixed) and I repeat that I think it reasonable to suppose that Frontier will have learned a lot in the process.

So, yeah Frontier. Supersede 2.1. Leave it in place but no longer max level. Sweep the god fleets under the out of date exploit carpet as being now meh anyway.

Give us Loot & Crafting Version 2. Show us that Season 1 quality once again. Make it a good one!

Maybe when you put as much time and effort into your stuff as some of us you can talk until then go back to trading or whatever you do. Because I know you have expressed your unwillingness to be part of PvP quite often. So you are hardly allowed to talk about how it feels to have your time investments to turn worthless. Yea. It hurts dare I admit it actually brings a tear to my eye in a bad way? Because it does. I'll admit it.

If it contains no RNG and allows us once again to play the way we want, sure.

Bulldoze away. The RNGineers are garbage.

I fully agree with that.
RNGineers is awful on every single point, idea, design and realization. It's on the level of the most idiotic grinds you can find in korean MMOs.
So far, it's probably the worst decision FD has ever made regarding ED.

Had I been told during beta that someone would try to shoehorn a casino in a game that's mostly about piloting skills, I'd never have backed it.

This is why I posted this thread. There is a real risk that any near gear will come as one of the following (or combinations thereof):

* New weapons and modules that you then have to engineer from scratch to get the maximum out of them.
* New and more powerful (or just mandatory against Thargoids) engineer mods

If RNGineers were out of the picture entirely for any new gear, I'd be fine with that.

Or, they could improve the depth of the game by instead making whatever new system they have in place into a different but equal system to the engineers (and remove cheated mods from exploited modules, obviously, can't really have a balance discussion as long as they exist). That way, everyone wins! Legitimate mods from engineers remain useful and competitive, players who don't mind gathering mats will still be rewarded for doing so, players who don't like engineers get an alternative system with which to acquire top-tier gear and finally the most dedicated players will mix and match between the different systems for optimum performance. For example, if there was fancy military modules that were only available through military missions or thargoid tech available from salvage, make sure their stat ranges are within the similar ranges as the G5 engineer mods and we are all good to go.

From scratch? So they're resetting your Engineering ranks back to 1 as well?

That would be horrid, since it takes 3 grade 1's, 3 grade 2's, 3 grade 3's and 4 grade 4's to reach grade 5, which literally takes all of 3 minutes, 9 seconds to do (if you have enough materials).

After that, it only takes 1 good G5 and you're done.

---

Of course, it's also entirely possible that any new "military" gear will be beyond the scope of Engineers, and thus simply cannot be Engineered - which might make it statistically less powerful than engineered civilian modules, but if it's the ONLY thing that can stand up to an alien threat...

"If you have the mats" / "takes 1 good G5" - the materials both of these are not had in a few minutes. The mats for all of that can take hours to collect, a good G5 can be had after 1 roll or after 100, such is the nature of RNG.

Also: if the new stuff will be new mods, there might be new engineers so indeed we would have to unlock and level them up from scratch!
