I agree that it should not conform to generic definitions about MMO; even because other MMO are trying to move away from the traditional MMo
ED was never planned to be a standard mmo, it is not EVE and I am glad for that
It isn't much at all currently, there's no player-generated content or social aspect. And no in depth NPC-based challenges even if it
were single player focused, there's a scripted community event that if you want to have
any impact on needs to be played in solo mode but even that is just farming vs easy NPCs.
The marketplace, economy and industry side in general is extremely simplistic and arcade-like as well, and at least two of the professions are inherently broken (piracy and mining, and that includes piracy vs. NPCs).
It's all well and good saying "it's not a standard MMO", but at the moment it isn't
anything. It has some half-hearted MMO tropes like the community event, or the persistent universe where player's actions can "change the galaxy around [them] in an ever unfolding story" but realistically that's and it's just... lacking.
I would have been excited about a game like this in the 90s, but now it falls far short of the mark left by other games. I'm used to games that have mechanics in place that allow me to generate my own content, wage my own wars and fight for my own causes against players or even AI with a modicum of skill rather than mindless fish-in-a-barrel NPC farming at conflict zones.
Don't get me wrong, I love the flight system in this game. Fitting has it's kinks, and the cargo system is ridiculous but it's a good base for a fun game. Currently it's getting by purely on the fun of it's flight mechanics however, once that wears off if nothing substantial has been added I can't see it lasting long enough for people to buy the paid updates they have planned.
