FDev's Arthur: "We think Thursday's stream will be really good, looking forward to it" RETURN OF GALNET?

Having started playing computing engine games in the 1970's - so being used to the introduction of entertainment software being announced just prior to release, said software arrivng, initially, on a cassette tape and support for the inevitable bugs was non-existent... It bothers me not in the least if a developer 'communicates' with me - provided the software arrives when indicated, and as a benefit of 'modern times' bug fixing patches are released, I'm happy.
That pretty much me.

If things were to change, it would also show that positively criticising, nagging and all that stuff, does indeed get attention and more to the point, action. So basically if that's the case - everyone keep doing what you are doing... :D
Or it could be that all the 'writing' required for Odyssey is done and the personnel are returning as planned by Frontier. Maybe Frontier never removed the spaces in the UI for Galnet, because this was the expected progression all along.

CMDRs get annoyed when features are removed.

CMDRs get excited when features are added.

Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
Removing features is considered acceptable now, otherwise you couldn't speak of "perfectly balanced", right?

Edit:

With the execption of back in the day game were not released unfinished or WIP. Features could not be removed or bolted on. Features weren't paid in advance, so there was not such a need for communication. The situation is very different since games are released unfinished, full of bugs and features broken or incomplete. In those cases (and this is true for any service provider) communication with the customer is of paramount importance.

They should communicate more. I know why they don't, but this is not a community which works well with a wall of silence. Even a simple "Don't worry guys, we're working on something to replace GalNet, and we think you'll like it!" would go a long way.
They are communicating - watch the news on thursday for more. Or are you suggesting they should spoil their own reveals just because we ask them on the forums?

So we are at a point where we are excited about removed features being potentially announced to be brought back into the game.

Removed partially due to players criticising it, remember? So yes, I believe the players that actually liked Galnet and didn't want it removed would be very excited at a prospect of it coming back and I see nothing strange about that.

Fluff articles without impact on the game were discontinued. GalNet itself was discontinued due to ressource shortage. I just wanted to highlight at which low base level of expectation the community is nowadays, which I hardly blame the community for.

Fluff articles WERE Galnet. Then there was a brief period of II's, which were reflected in Galnet and then yes - they took those down too due to resource shift to Odyssey, from what they were saying.

Hence I've said "partially". Who knows how things would look if the community didn't start moaning about Galnet.

Frontier have said Galnet "is not on the roadmap" (or words to that effect).

So, if Galnet does come back - does that also mean that anything else Frontier have said is "not on the roadmap" may also make an appearance one day? (Example: Base Building)...
Obviously. Frontier seem to mean something different by "roadmap" to what players hear it as.

Frontier says: "This is not on our list of currently planned and at least roughly scheduled work"
Players hear: "Frontier have a complete plan for Elite Dangerous for the next three centuries, so if it's not on it, it's never happening"

(I'm still not expecting Base Building any time soon, though, since "like a fleet carrier but you can't move it" is going to be a tough one to add major new gameplay around)

Although I imagine its a return to dev authored stories, I also want the local news back (with an eye for this being improved). Although the authored stuff is the headline the sheer amount of info hidden away would be great for general background noise in Galnet Audio.

Lol. They haven't talked about anything in Odyssey in great detail :ROFLMAO:
Indeed... At this stage I just want to know if the plant life they discussed is:-
  1. Hardcoded assets basically created by artists.
  2. Generated by a solid procedural enginal based on dozens of bits of information from both Stellar Forge (eg: surface temp/atmosphere makeup) and the planet surface itself (eg: altitude/nearby features).
Because (1) concerns me, and (2) would give me some hope for next year.

With the game containing mostly of automatically generated and player imagined content, those interesting fluff articles probably where glaringly showing players missed opportunities. Like the story about the missed lottery ticket, how cool would that have been, if it could be found in some signal source or so.

Yeah... While it would be extremely cool, that would require a continuous effort from FDEV and would effectively be adding a mini-narratives to the game. There are A LOT of issues with that kind of stuff (is it for 1-off for whoever finds it first or is it respawning for any player etc.). Effort vs Return and all that corporate jazz.

I remember one article which was about some terrorist group taking over a station and threatening to destroy it with a bomb. I went to that station and it was controlled by a minor faction of the same name as the rogue group from the article. They were not in control of any other assets in the game etc.

That was very cool and for me it was an acceptable level of "Galnet in Game" type of stuff. I don't think I was expecting full mini stories as narrative for me to play, but a little touch like that added believable setting to what the Galnet reported and that was OK for me.

Stuff like the kidnapped ship etc. - that ship could be there for everyone to find with maybe a standard black box to scan... But it's hand crafted content that costs money. On the other hand MMO games in general have a rather stable influx of new content being added to them to keep end game players engaged. Elite doesn't.

Well, you mean like a real service game with continous support?:p

At least they could have created a framework to create such unique missions. It is probalby pretty similar to CGs, but a way smaller scope or even just a single opportunity. Would have been better than nothing.
