FEEDBACK: 2.2.03 Update #4 New VR feature - Enabled dithering for VR to reduce banding.

Just dl'd the update. Much improved color and the banding is pretty much gone. I moved on from Colonia a couple of days ago and have to say the galaxy and nebula are really starting to look good. Still a little color washy near stars but much better. Man there are a lot of neutron stars and black holes out here. Should have a wealth of data when I return to civilization as long as I don't do something stupid.

Nice fix ED. Keep up the good work and Thank you.

I don't see ANY differences whatsoever in my CV1 :( Still horrible banding. Where do I see what version of the game I have and is there any way to update it or is it automatic? Some said you can see version on launcher but it just says 0.4.5912.0 (0.4.5499.0 SERVER) FD and then the date. I can't have a version that low? (Very confused)

Edit: I realized there was a "check for updates" button and my game is up to date. How can the same version of the game look so different for me? If anyone figures out a way to make dithering apply for everyone please tell

Is your graphics card set to full dynamic range color?

Got the chance to do a new comparison that shows the improvements.

First the unaltered screenshot which may or may not show the differences depending on your monitor quality and settings:

And here I have dragged the levels adjuster in Photoshop to make it appear clearly.

I am thinking people is going to want this outside VR too.

Yes, absolutely. I haven't started ED in 2D mode. Is the dithering present in the monitor window? If so it's probably present in normal 2D windows/full-screen modes too.

I'd be surprised if the dithering was VR-specific.

Its not fair!

I see absolutely no difference at all. The left screenshot would be the same for me in both release and beta servers :(

For those not seeing any differences - check your gamma settings and make sure its in the middle (I think the middle of the slider is the default? At work and cannot check) -

Or try a reset to defaults, log out of ED, restart ED and then set your preferences again.

There is no setting for dithering, its on by default.

Very noticeable improvement for me (CV1/GTX970) - colour banding is gone, even with gamma set quite low. This is only in-game - the start-up logo still has horrible banding, but I don't care about that.

(Blacks seem black and colours more vibrant, but I'm think dithering would have done that, so either they fixed something else, or I am imagining this).

Have to admit I have not looked at the game outside VR for ages. But my screenshots are from the "VR preview window" (or whatever its correct name is). I gonna test this now.

Ok, I'm back and dithering is only in VR (it's only viewable in VR preview window in 2D, not any other 2D mode).

I'm quite convinced the startup logo is horribly compressed, or just simply done like that.
Should really not be necessary this day and age.

Just to confirm I see a big improvement after the patch - mostly on the skybox, but also on planets from orbit. The downside is a slight loss of crispness, but a worthwhile sacrifice imo. Nice job.

I have also noticed a performance improvement. I can now run PD @ 1.4 (I, still, use the debug tool as it allows for more choice of settings). Planet surfaces are now smooth as a baby's butt with no discernable judder. Before, I would run 1.2 or 1.3 and would still see some slight judder, especially down on planets. Stars also seem crisper than before at the same PD. Quite pleased.

was playing yesterday and loved how smooth everything looks now... it's add even more deep to the space since you don't see banding.

Thanks!

Sad to say I'm in the "cant see a difference" bag (gtx 970, cv1). Also popped by the alien site in solo and for the first time ever the surface of the planet was a horrible pixel patchwork mess - never seen that before - although that might be down to network stress from everyone playing..

Well after playing some last night it has marginally improved.

Having said that, I have gone from a 4K display to a Rift with a fraction of the resolution so I could well be expecting more than I should be.

Really pleased with the results from differing, glad to see fixes are being made now just a few more little pickles.
Game also started to feel little smoother.

Need to test it ASAP but if they fixed its' HUGE, stopped playing cause banding was so distracting for me even with important usage of THC.

Yes very important helps my Glaucoma that I am not sure I have, ha

Going in tonight after I update to check this out fingers crossed

Wow much better thank you FD for finally doing something about that also noticing a little performance improvement but wow not seeing hardly any banding with gamma at first click. Not getting that giant circle of bad color when I break out at a star either or least not nearly as bad. Before it was like you entered a cloud and had to exit it to see, nice work.
