First exploration

I only ever did the black market stuff to unlock whichever Arthur Daley Engineer it was that needed me to. Selling stolen goods is a lot of effort for little return, imo.

what ???

That is your quantity, not his. . Click focus crystals then scoot round the others the number in the box you can see is the trade rate. 36/1 you give 36 and get one. So if you have any to the tight (in the grid) of the Focus Crystals you can trade down.
When I click on focus crystals every other square on the grid goes red

Ok, I think I've got it.
In the screenshot, top left, I need 2 Pharmaceutical Violators for 2 Focus Crystal ?

Or the other way around, it is hard to tell when I haven't pushed the buttons :)

In any case, it looks like you haven't got much of anything right now.

You need to keep collecting. You either don't have the right things to trade down or enough of the lower items to trade up.

Another thing you can try is looking at the missions board. Each mission normally has 3 types of reward, (You can only choose one) sometimes one of those rewards will contain one of the above materials.

Ok that seems clear enough.
I have a 16 tonne capacity, do I just not collect anything other that what is required by the trader ?

The materials you collect do not fill up your cargo hold. Go to the panel in your ship on the right. Tab across to Inventory. Normally we all flick at that to see what we are carrying in our cargo hold. Down the left hand side though are further things we are carrying. Those sorts of mats (and others) you will find isn there. Things like the mats you collected to synth the bonus ammo in the SRV. None of that fills up you cargo racks, it sits in bins, which, btw, never empty when you die. Which is just as well because as you're finding out, it's one hell of a job to fill them up :)

Ok thank you
There are 2 missions on the the board that reward a Focus Crystal

No problem and....see if you can grab the missions now, you normally get 24 hours to complete them. Grab them whilst they're there.

A word to the wise... when accepting a mission.. scroll to the bottom to see if any penalties are incurred for failure to complete the mission.. some can be pretty stiff.
What kind of mission is also critical... a cobra MKIII , especially like yours is ill suited for combat.... courier missions are great for new pilots... chose the ones that fly for empire or federation... start up the ladder to getting your other ships that you will want some day(maybe). Delivery missions showing only 1 arrow are good too.. watch out for the double arrowed trade.. that means you have to find a planet that has what you need, fly to it, pick it up0 and then fly back to the point of origin. If you are not famiiliar with the area,,, that could be frustrating. If self defence, I have created a galaxy trade spreadsheet that lists all the tradables, (buy and sell), the planet system and the station that buys or sellss.... makes a big difference for me. I am expanding that as I go .... right now in the bubble around Shinrartra, I have a lot of planets gridded out. example below:
