Formidine Rift... what is it?

If it helps, Drew added a new article on his website, a profile of Loren (containing story spoilers)

http://www.drewwagar.com/progress-report/profile-senator-kahina-tijani-loren/

Her only weakness seemed to be a fondness for trumbles.

TRUMBLES! Now that puts the fear into many a Commander. Anybody find a nest of them? :D

Hmm, here's a thought, FWIW. Still reading the old Oolite stuff. It seems the FSDs or whatever they were called back then were quite short range, and it was very rare to be able to jump over 7LY or thereabouts. If that is the case, would the Formidine Rift actually potentially be much closer to Known Space (tm) then we might think based on our current FSD ranges? A near-impassible Rift of 7LYs apart systems is quite different from an impassable Rift with systems 30-40 LY apart. Just throwing it out there, may be the Leestian Evil Juice talking.

In Oolite it is possible to jump further than 7 LY. You can go 10.5 LY if my math is correct.

But still signifcantly less than 30-40LY. And at least one character had "military" FSD allowing 20LY jumps in the lore, but that seemed to be the exception.

or it may be based on a 10 LY drive...

No. Drew wrote Reclamation in the E: D universe where the drives do the same distance but took longer back in Rebecca's time. The formula being distance^2 hours. So a 30 LY jump would have taken 37.5 days. Efficiency jumping would cut that down but it would still be a long time, especially if you are going out to the rim. Maybe that is what the fear is in the Formidine Rift, being all alone for a long time whilst traversing witchspace over large distances.

That's just an Oolite thing. The original Elite never had a clock, so you couldn't tell, but in FE2/FFE, a jump took 1 week for a maximum range jump for that drive - so an Eagle with a Class 1 drive would take a week to go 8 LY, but with a Class 2 (military, to fit it on...) it would go 32 LY in the same time. I think it was just linear with distance if you jumped less far, but I can't remember for certain.

Of course, the modern long-range FSDs can cross the galaxy and back in a week, while even the then ridiculously overpowered for plot reasons Class 4 Military drive from FFE would only get you about 100-500 LY in that time, depending on what you fitted it to.

The quote in Drews latest book is something like no stars for dozens of light years. Which is why I think it's far outside the core systems and towards the rim. But I have been wrong before :)

Just for clarity. The difference between a regular vs military drives of the same class was that the military drive was physically smaller, weighed significantly less, got you there in less time but generated radioactive waste. Range was the same though.
You got better range by fitting a higher class drive which was possible on smaller ships using military drives due to weight efficiency.

Is she saying that as a figure of speech or exaggerating?

The Class 4 Military did not correspond to a normal Class 4 and was the equivalent of something like a Class 15.

Hi. I have been following the line for some time now before all this forum hype started. Sadly, real life has caught up and I wont be able to play for at least a month.

I'm right now near the heart & soul nebula, but leaving it on my left. My main destination was the star aisle that crosses the arms, but I doubt I'll make it in at least a month.

If you zoom out fully in the galaxy map, there is an aisle of closer packed stars which would allow for a ship with the older FSDs to probably cross. That was my destination. Has anybody else checked it out? It lies right on the line...

You would be able to get to the edge of the arm and keep going with shorter jump range, just like in the description...

Just throwing this out there as I wont be able to make it...

Also, military drives could only use military fuel, which was much more expensive than hydrogen fuel.

That was a Quest (ship) specific item unless you hacked the game so you couldn't buy it.

And the problem with that was that military fuel had to be bought not scooped which means any long distance explorer would have to be a decently sized ship or else it would be a one way trip.

Yep I hear ya on the real life stuff, I'm in the NGC nebula past elephants trunk on the way to heart and soul. May see ha out there

I'll look into it.

Reading the GalNet article, Senetor Loren's ship is undergoing a significant upgrade. Significantly, this includes weapons and the frame shift drive. She is going somewhere and since she is upgrading here FSD, you'd assume it's somewhere far.

And dangerous.... Cliche but there's the game title again..
