Frontier, if you need more beta testers then make beta free

Selling beta access is utterly perverse. They attract entirely the sort of person you don't want to play a beta.

The sort of person who's goal is NOT to report any exploitable bugs they find - and instead hope to see them left in.

Ahh karma.. You reap what you sow.
Wow, now there's a statement with no basis in fact. Maybe you should be in marketing. ;-)

Surely a free beta test would allow FDEV to garner a wider audience sample base?

What we all agree to work on is to improve ED. That's the revenue stream, not charging a minority to test something, then release something that makes the main playerbase stomp because bugs and silly silly decisions were made that benefits 2% of the players. (made up figure for illustration purposes only).

Surely reputation, and an enlarged playerbase is worth more to FDEV than a small beta coffer. All they have to do is listen to the majority, start adding features that benefit the majority, and as a result, the majority of people will spread the good word, and the majority of time, will encourage more people to try it.. Replace majority with minority if one desires, but from a business point of view, majority is a much more attractive word!

More beta testers = good for ED. The current model clearly doesn't work out so well, hence volumes of bugs and problems and endless 0.8% tweaks to various weapons for 6 months afterwards, and hundreds of srs bsns threads.

If this is the way it is then so be it.

One famous dude once said 'so be it...' and ended up getting pushed off a ledge lol.

May the force be with y'all this weekend.

How's that seven year old pint of milk doing?

I agree on the marketing from the newsletter sub, it would be better to have two separate unsubscribes. Adding ads into the newsletter will just have more posts here about 'I want a newsletter, this is ads'.

Drank it all before the end of the seven years - also food is not included for health reasons unless it is canned... Wife has to deal with EU food standards and regulations everyday. Although with software of course all you are buying is a license to use it as long as the issuer see's fit so doubtful if it would apply to a beta. Put it down to it being Friday and me being grumpy because I actually had to do work today!

I now no longer get the newsletter as I un-subbed - Not a problem I'll just look it up and read it online. :)

They don't need to offer it for free if enough people pay.

Buying the Beta access includes that access for THE ENTIRE SEASON. You are not paying for it every single time a new Beta comes along. Depending on how many point updates a season has, you could be looking at anywhere from 5-7 separate test cycles. Not to mention all the iterations each beta cycle ends up seeing. We are on BETA 3 right now, and I expect we will see at least one possibly two more.

The price of admission goes towards funding future development of the game. You like the game right? Do you want Frontier to be around for a while longer? Well...

Considering what they are asking for this access, to be whining and complaining about this minuscule fee is pretty lame in my opinion.

Fortunately, some of us GET IT. ;)

They do not need you, they are graciously offerring you the unique opportunity to pay them for testing their software.

I will graciously sacrifice a small child to them at dawn. Hopefully it will be to their pleasure to make the game good. If not it`ll be a virgin woman next.

Not even close. I'm commenting on the poor image Frontier portray when they attempt to market early access as if it were a product. Check my post on page 12 if the OP didn't explain it thoroughly enough, I don't care to repeat myself again for the umpteenth time in this thread.

Do not try to sell people beta access via marketing email please. You are not struggling for cash nor do you have a lack of micro transaction revenue sources so please don't act like you are/do. You're not helping your image by being so eager to exploit your own beta process as an extra revenue source.

If you need a large number of beta testers to test new features then I suggest you stop charging for early beta access and just make open beta (accessible to all) and closed (invite only) beta stages. That's how productive and effective beta testing is done in pretty much every other game in the industry. I've been part of a few over the years.

@My fellow CMDRS - there are 2 commander faces with smiles in the images, does this mean we now have changing expressions, i.e. a smile animation from time to time?

Also, there is a female face with a black line of paint across her eyes. Is this cosmetic option available currently as part of the feature or will it be a micro transaction addition purchasable from the store? - And if it is a micro transaction cosmetic why is it being advertised as a part of this beta?

You don't buy a car with four flat tires, then thank the salesman for selling you the car in the first place.

That metaphor is exactly how selling Beta access is for a new patch, which all Horizon players will have access to when fully live. People who bought the beta should just get a refund, in my opinion. It was wrong to sell it on top of the Horizons release, and it is wrong to sell it seperatly now.

This is the ONLY game I know of, online, that sells Beta access! I mean... don't you want a variety of test-bed machines and reliable data from determined people? People who are good at testing but won't buy into your Beta (myself included).

Frontier, you have a store filled with paint jobs, weapon colours, ship kits, and bobble kits - why on earth are you trying to sell us a car with four flat tires, too?

Either way, I think it is a trash move, and my opinion of Frontier has lowered considerably because of them selling "Betas" despite the game having sold millions of units on both PC, X-Box One, and soon the PS4/4.5.

Free MMOs have dedicated servers and survive well off of micro-transactions, and without having to ship units for a full-game price-tag - how are you unable to do this, Frontier?

Instead, we're left to rot with Peer-to-Peer and Amazon servers on top of these Beta sells... stop wasting your capital on a Peer-to-Peer concept that should've died in the 90's and 00's and actually get some proper servers. You might actually get somewhere with multi-player if you do this.

If there is something this thread has shown me, it is that my rather lengthy ignore list is justified.

Personally, I'm on page 13. I hate to think how many posts are blocked due to people who simply CANNOT READ. And there is a direct corrolation to those people, and their attitudes towards those who diss the game in ANY WAY.

OP, I read and understood the point of the post, and I am in complete agreement - I even HAVE beta access, but because it's such a shameful cashgrab of an update, coupled with the obvious pew pew direction the game is headed, I've played it for literally 30 mins, and then I gave up and not gone back since.

Frontier shouldn't need to be asking for beta players, if the beta forums are anything to go by. So blatant misuse of the email system for marketing purposes is just that - misuse. It isn't going to 'trick' people into paying for beta, and I am doubtful it's bringing in lots of new beta testers all willing to pay for the pleasure of a few week's access to unfinished features that will remain so after beta is finished.

They possibly need more testers for load balancing tests. Hardly worth paying money for.

It almost reminds me of those emails you get from your dead aunt in Zambia...out of a million of them being sent out, one sucker falls for it...

It seems to be working quite well, with what they are doing? giving 'more' people access to a beta does not mean it will have a better feedback.
Paying for beta access is as good a filter to put as any, if people pay, they are a bit more likely, to actually do beta work and not simply just play?

so yeah...this is fine, and really you are getting all the same replies as every single other thread like this, absolutely nothing wrong with paying for beta access, you can chose to pay or not, this post makes you seem like you simply want beta access for free, because previous games have given you that, and you've gotten used to it?

I've never seen a community self-flagellate as much as the Elite one does. Seriously, there's like a committee that hunts for critical threads and then jumps down the OP's throat en masse.

/sigh

Really considering abandoning this place. Let them have their echo chamber.

Makes two of us. Believe me.

Running away from criticism only makes you more fragile and unable to handle any kind of opinion that doesn`t match yours. Then when you have an opinion you`ll think everyone agrees with you since you only have an echoe chamber around you. Not good for your growth as a person.

Oh wait, you can`t see this anyway.

I also got one of these, no doubt I will get a second for my other account.

I no longer want to get these marketing emails from Frontier but there seems to be no opt out for them on my account settings page... Oh well I guess I'll just have to block all emails from Frontier due to this shortsightedness. How stupid to send marketing emails from the newsletter email account - this is marketing not news.

Click unsubscribe done.

Just saw this in my inbox, marked FD as spam and deleted the e-mail, I dont mind e-mails regarding purches I might make but marketing crap can fudge right off.

All emails offering something to purchase are marketing, I'm not sure how FD could gauge beforehand what you would judge to be acceptable marketing.

I know the opinions of those on my ignore list, because they've stated them again, and again, and again, and .... again.
